Welcome to the official Omnibus With Alistair Cooke channel on UA-cam - Featuring the landmark series broadcast live across the US from 1952 to 1961, the most distinguished series of Television’s Golden Age. Here we’ll look back at the award-winning collection of social, political, and cultural highlights from the mid-20th century, the most remarkable assembly of talent ever presented on American screens.
Omnibus showcased both established stars and rising talent, many of whom made their television debuts on the show, starring in classic drama, modern comedy, musical theater, ballet, jazz, popular music, folk music, and dance. Omnibus ranged even further with presentations on art and architecture, avant-garde literature, American and world history, criminal and constitutional law, international relations, sports, and science. Viewers tuned in for entertainment, but also for instruction and insight.
The series aired successively over the CBS, ABC, and NBC networks, consistently attracted 16 million viewers to each episode, and won more than 65 awards, including nine Emmys and two Peabody awards.
Make sure you subscribe to see how television could bring the arts, science, and letters to a mass audience for the first time.

What a treasure! Thank you!! And what a miracle to time travel and see and hear this Spiritual powerhouse tell it like it is. He looks like Ed Wynn, so I suspect he knows how to laugh and enjoy life. The year I was born (1938) he published a book called A GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE, which I still find shocking, but never felt threatened by. We are all of our times and we are all given unique perspectives as we serve God. He made me think and to this day I am grateful for his words and his faith. He lived with integrity and gave all the good things God allowed him to give. I am sure that he lives now with exactly the same values, but with a thousand times more peace, joy and power! ONWARD!
2:58 His calluses on the finger tips look insane! Now I understand why I do not produce good sound, cause I did not practice enough to have that amount of calluses.
Im here after watching only murders in the building series
Beautiful to watch. Ray Robinson has been verified as the "GOAT", verified by Muhammad Ali.
Benny, Teddy, and Gene played music that had a flow and that's what jazz or any fine music or fine anything is all about. It's now 2024 soon to be 2025, and the flow is long gone...long gone.
GOLDMINE!!!! THANK YOU!!!
I wish i could have seen this live but sadly ot was before my time and i really like George M Cohan's songs and plays
I really like ragtime and my preferences of music is 1903-1919
And I might be 27 but I live by it even by what other people say about it
Mesmerising. Absolutely the perfect way to be introduced to Dickens. ‘Mr Bob Sawyer gives a Bachelor Party” is another reading that Emlyn Williams has recorded. Medical students have not changed in 150 years - drinking and horrifying people with gruesome stories.
I was given a 12” LP of Martyn Green singing patter songs when I was about 9 or 10. I loved the record and I knew all the songs by heart.
The Pied Piper of Beethoven..........not a bad epitaph at all! But to answer Bernstein's implied question, speaking for myself, it greatly enhanced the musical performance for me to watch Messr. Bernstein seemingly have the time of his life in front of a group of dedicated, expert musicians working together to achieve, more often than not, exceptional and noteworthy results, on a regular basis. I could listen to Bernstein's orchestras, and even more enthusiastically, to him describing anything as mundane as the NYC telephone directory. Hats off, Mr. Bernstein! I will never forget you.....
sounds like the original "RAP"
Do you know who played the characters in this version "Hamlet"?
I see in this video that he still has both legs as I remember his one leg was crushed in a car garage elevator ,not sure when that was.
It's crazy that such a specific snapshot of a time can still be hilarious over 60 years later. A guy slips on a banana peel, that's golden. A bit about coin-operated telephones and real life operators? But it works. I gotta dig up more of this.
😆😆😆
Marvellous. And a fitting antidote to the televisual rubbish everywhere in American TV and cinema
Wow Bradley Cooper is so young here!
Ouro puro!
Here's to giving Mr Thurber his nickel, and the dollar too, and not feeling shortchanged in the least. :)
Bernstein didn't start using a baton regularly until later. Toscanini was no longer conducting by 1955; he had retired a year earlier.
for whatever reason, no question that Robinson comes across as the better dancer in this clip. as much as we love and admire Gene Kelly -.....
Gene Kelly was so versatile my favorite Actor by far!!
Gene Kelly was The Best.
I saw them in one of their last appearances at Saratoga NY with Lionel hampton+ The Benny Goodman Quartet-wonderful!!
Remember watching and loving the Omnibus program in the early years when only 5 or 6 years old. Amazing performances and variety. So happy to find this channel.
Amazing and surprising
Both the playing style and conducting style have changed a lot. I’m glad the camera man focussed on the conductor somewhat so I could really see it. The seating arrangement helped a lot for that.
Somebody called this sketch "rapey". Good grief.
Somebody was an idiot. At best.
legend
Fascinating interview. It would be interesting to know which of his works at that point Wright considered to be failures and why ...
Fabulous!
Orson Wells, such a genius!
My generation did not know Omnibus, but the later Alistair Cooke of America and Masterpiece Theatre. These videos are priceless treasures!
As a nascent fan of Gilbert & Sullivan for the past 3 years, I delight in discovering new Companies' interpretations and this is a cracking great one. Blessing the day I discovered Martyn Green!
you can't take your eyes off Sugar Ray!!! wow!
RIP Mike Nichols 🙏✡️🕯🎤🎭
Thanks for uploading. This is great!!!! They're geniuses.
Margaret Hamilton was a treasure!
When multi-track (2`track) recordings appeared in the 50's, the children of musicians remember how their parents told them not to listen to it, that it was an insult to music and a deception. Imagine them now if they listened to autotune with the AI voice of a dead man.
13:10 does anyone know who the principles are in the “oriental “section?
Robbie Johnson was a fine Johnson
Boswell was a bit more Scottish
These are available on DVD. Very good programs. By the way, Lenny studied with Reiner.
I like Alistair Cookie. But please: no more Sesame Street Jokes. Anna Russel did that Russian song that Jeff Moss lifted for Count Von Count in 1973.
You have to say UA-cam is amazing. This was exactly what I was looking for. Speaking of Cooke it's a shame that one thing you can't find is his perfect introductions to Masterpiece Theatre. (Nor Danger Man with the American credits.)
It's believed Dr Johnson was an obsessive-compulsive because of some of his odd behaviour.
Yes ocd and quite possibly taurettes syndrome
They just invented Pete Townshend.
AMF 82-30 pinsetters started 1955 but old fart slow!!
This is wonderful.
Gene Krupa looks like he’s playing to try and get his bored kids excited.
