Why not try driving a School Bus ? If you get on with the actual school division you get a decent wage and possible pension etc. The wage is comparable if not more than food deliveries and you wouldn’t be destroying the value and expected lifespan of your personal vehicle. I myself switched a couple years ago and for myself it was the best career move I ever made. I have a friend that was one of the layoffs from Bell in the MTS Acquisition in Manitoba and he’s one of the laid off that has not found permanent work.

Hi Martin My story is very similar to yours. I have been made redundant 3 times in Australia. No fault of mine but the companies were struggling. I managed to work in my profession for two more years after my last redundancy when I was 65 years old. At 67 I was made redundant not because of my work but the company didn’t require my services any more. I haven’t worked since then I did do uber eats but I didn’t enjoy this work. I am now 73 tired for ever. I think employers should hire older professionals , younger ones are not loyal and they leave. Can’t handle the stress.

I’m 50 and have been in law enforcement for nearly 30 years. I took a job as Chief of Police in a small town of less than 800 people. I thought it would carry me to retirement. It was a dream of mine to be a chief before retiring. That was March of 2023 and I was fired in May of 2024. During that time I found out how corrupt this town and the elected officials were. They did not want someone with integrity, and did not like being called out for their shady behavior and criminal family members. I am now working contract security making more money than I did as a Chief of Police. But it’s only a job. I feel like my career has been ruined and stripped from me over political reasons.

My first job out of college was at a large engineering firm, within a year of being hired the company started having rolling layoffs. Over the next few years of layoffs I watched the older workers get picked off one by one. That right their taught me I would be a saver storing up in my good younger years so I would be ready when and if my time came. Fortunately I was able to save enough to retire early, though I really didn’t retire but instead became self employed and pretty much work when I want and can sleep late just about anytime I want.

Thank you Martin for sharing. Yes, ageism is a real and very unfortunate thing. I just turned 60 and see it all around also. I think your A--hole former boss did you a favor in a way. I hope you find somewhere that you are appreciated and that you work for people who value their employees. Too often, managers say their employees are the most important, then they turnaround and treat them like crap. Best of luck to you. Please remember, you are much more than what you do to earn a living. Don't forget about volunteer opportunities as well as online instruction, especially with your background.

26:16 Having been through this I found not taking the knockbacks personally the hardest but most important to master. I have created a portfolio of interests. Some paid some voluntary I've created. What the world sees in us is filtered by external bias. We know the internal value we bring. It takes animal cunning to find the gaps and have been most successful when I create my own side hustle from scratch not a gig job.

happens all the time. In my experience, this is quite common. No one is irreplaceable. Having been a senior person at many companies and having hired / fired many people, age discrimination is very real. Younger people are cheaper (biggest reason for firing older workers), more motivated, more flexible, more manageable, re-skill more quickly, less of an insurance risk, etc, etc, etc. Also, some companies have culture / fit issues with people of a certain age, this can cut both ways, though usually most companies do not want to be too top heavy with for a variety of reasons and young people do not want to work at a company with a bunch of old folks either, recruiting talent can be an issues if candidates view a company as run by a gerontocracy. Being 'older' myself. I have seen this play out in many many ways. Usually firing for cause is last resort and does require a lot of paperwork, at least here in the US. Usually they begin by stripping a person of responsibilities, stop giving them raises (even COLA) and hope the person will get the hint and leave on their own accord. Early outs, downsizing, re-organizing is another common tactic. When these things happen, my, unsolicited, advise it to negotiate your exit, if possible. This can take many forms, almost everything is negotiable, except term for cause, which should always be vigorously challenged, IMO. Anyway. this is already getting too long... You have a great attitude, which is essential. Best of luck and continue to evaluate and consider your options while you can.
