The OG love story is how Robin Scherbatsky pined for Ted Mosby for over twenty years, too afraid to give herself to him entirely because she felt unworthy of him. She was scared of his overt romanticism, because she was broken inside, had commitment issues, and couldn't give him what he wanted right now. But Ted Mosby made her shift the foundations of her belief. She began thinking that she could open herself to marriage and/or children in the future. Then she found out that she could never have children. And she never told Ted that! Why? Because it meant the door was firmly closed on them being together; she couldn't give Ted what he wanted. Once again, she felt unworthy of him. And so she had to watch Ted slip by her, slowly realising that she ought to have given herself to him when she had the chance. But it was too late. Or, at least she thought it was too late, until Tracy's sad passing. Robin's love for Ted was the real story. None of this invalidates the fact that Robin did fall in love with Barney. But the closer she got to her wedding, the more she began longing for Ted again. She felt wrong marrying Barney, because Ted was the one that had made her open to future marriage in the first place. Yes, she went ahead and married Barney, but the marriage failed because their relationship had always been built on the fact that they expected nothing from each other. And Robin realised that expecting nothing from your spouse means you will get nothing in return. Robin is the real tragic character of this series, and it's a shame she provokes such a divided reaction. I don't think you have to be in any camp at all. Ted and Robin were soulmates. But that doesn't mean that Robin didn't love Barney. And there's no doubt that Ted fell deeply in love with Tracy, and that their marriage satisfied him in every way. It does mean that she settled for Barney as an easier option, because Ted was too romantic and too demanding, and she felt unworthy of being with a man like him. Can anyone else not see this?

I see nobody is mentioning the fact that Robin didn't tell Ted she couldn't have kids because that would mean the end of her hopes of being with him in the future, if she ever changed her mind.

First season Robin was more aware of not entertaining Ted fantasies. And distanced herself to give him space to find what he truly needed. I don't get why the writers changed her character that much along the show turning her into a manipulative ex who couldn't be happy or let others be happy and move on. The writers did her wrong for sure

I know I'll likely get dragged for this, but I love the original ending. The alternate is great for the sake of fan service, but the original ending reminds that life isn't perfect and is full of the highest highs and the lowest lows. Ted and Robin also had that pact mentioned multiple times that if they were ever 40+ and single, they'd get married.

“I would have stolen you whole orchestra” the biggest triumph of Ted as a character is that i know he would have done exactly that, and so did Robin. That’s why she could never let go of him.

This is the part that I don’t get why people still shipped Robin and Barney. Barney was freaking out about the wedding but it was just because he was getting married, Robin on the other hand freaked out because she felt she was marrying the wrong guy and realized even before that scene that it was Ted who she should be with, but it was too late. Keep in mind I know she was not meant to be with Ted at that moment because it would have failed. They only became meant to be after Ted managed the courage to let go of Tracy 6 years after her passing, reason he told his kids the story, he wanted to remind himself he had a different life before Tracy and in that life there was Robin.

If you really think about it philosophically, Ted and Robin's relationship is ironic. Ted taught Robin to overcome her differences, and that sometimes you have to sacrifice things for the ones you love, Like her finally realizing she wanted to marry Ted. This is ironic because Ted doesn't act the same way he taught her, he is dead set on having kids and settling down, instead of just being with Robin the Girl that made him the happiest man alive, and the girl who only ever said I love you to one man him. But let's not forget that Robin had a flaw too which kept her form being with Ted. Robin's flaw was that she always realized she wanted to be with Ted forever when he was unavailable. but then the one time that they could have been together forever, when she decides she wants to marry him and he isn't dating anyone Ted screws up and pushes her away because he can't see the bigger picture and can't be happy with Robin if it means having to sacrifice wanting to have kids which is the opposite of how he taught her to live. So basically this show is really the story of how a man (Ted), who taught the girl he loves (Robin) to take chances and be with the man she loves (Ted), can't be with her because he won't take that chance and risk ruining their friendship/relationship, in spite all he taught her about love, taking chances, and sacrifices you need to make in order to be with the one you truly care about, and want to spend the rest of your life with. At the end Ted marries Tracy and has his two kids like he always wanted but part me always thought, that Ted may have lulled himself into believing that Tracy wasn't a consolation prize. I assume the perfect girl he meant to go on that date with was Tracy (The Mother) but he chose Robin over her, stating I don't want prefect he waned Robin. So to me that says Tracy was a consolation prize for Ted not being together with Robin, but that doesn't diminish Ted's love for Tracy. He loved her with every fiber in his body until the day she died, and for six years he never even thought about moving on, until telling his kids the story about meeting their mother, and them realizing Robin has always been the one and Ted just never fully realized it, because he was to selfish. The kids then tell Ted they are ready for him to be happy again and to go after Aunt Robin and be happy as they are already grown up and living their own lives, and that he needs to move on and be with the one that got away his true love he just never saw the bigger picture of. And that kids is how Ted Mosby was and has always been in love with Robin Scherbatsky from now until forever. The isn't How I Met Your Mother it's kids this is the story of The One That Got Away.

Robin and Ted were meant for each other, just as Tracy and Ted were meant for each other. Tracy wanted kids and family life. Robin didn’t. But as Robin tells Ted just before he tries to marry Stella, the history and feelings you have/had for someone don’t just go away because that person is marrying someone else. Ted tells Robin as much on the beach before she marries Barney. And there’s an analogue to this in Tracy’s life before we meet her when she loses her partner in an accident. That’s a key theme in the show. So later, when Ted has had his family and kids, and Robin has established her career, it makes sense for them to get together again. My complaints about the ending aren’t in conception so much, but in execution. It was rushed.

They really should have kept that scene. It would have made sense regardless of what ending they had gone for. It even made the actual ending make more sense.
