Some passes in my old MR2 - OKCUP Round 1 Race 1
Jumped into my old MR2 for a race, started from pit lane as I missed practice and went from 22nd to 5th. Camera died early so I only got some of the action.

Gardos F5000 - First time in anger since the 80's
Переглядів 2,2 тис.Рік тому
Took up the challenge to get the Gardos F5000 running at Hampton Downs. Every race it got quicker as changes were made, this was the last race of the weekend where everything came together. It's cut short as I was physically flogged (hence shuffling the wheel) as I was also running my Swift DB4 at the same event, so I just sort of coasted to the end and nothing much else happened. I started the...

A few laps of shake down by Jase in the DB4
Переглядів 545Рік тому
After I replaced the head gasket and sorted a few issues on the #31 Swift DB4, Jase was kind enough to give the car a shakedown (3 push laps) at a GT day before I take it down to Taupo in a couple of weeks. This was his first time in an Atlantic car so he did well considering his pace was good enough to be on the podium after just a few laps.
R1 Restart and R2 Start at Manfeild

First time driving the Swift DB4 in 5 months, missed practice and qualifying due to it being wet and not having wet tyres. Started from grid 31 and finished 4th after 8 laps. Started race 2 in 4th and then got into what was deemed a racing incident.

Penske 8100 Refresh
Переглядів 9692 роки тому
Rebuilding the Penske 8100 shock absorber with new seals for the Swift DB4 Formula Atlantic. They recently had the oil changed which is why it was reused. Video at 4x actual speed.
I saw the BRM P160E had this, googled it, and this was the first result, and I now know all I need to know. Google hasn't been this good since 2005
Those starts are so chaotic... pretty sure not a single driver looked before pulling out! :) blokes in three piece suits wandering onto the track!
I know the grass is always greener but I can't help think the 50s and early 60s were peak of humanity, certainly in the west... it's been down hill since.
6:57 Angle?
What’s the purpose of the white bushing/spacer… is it a droop limiter of sorts? Great video
@@HuntTam yeah, just an easy way to set droop without changing the shaft itself. Ideally you would just have the right length shaft.
@@swiftdb4our sports racer shocks (Not Penskes, but old Multimatics that are built nearly identically) have them too, but we believe we are droop limited in the rear so just removed them. Haven’t tested at an event yet. Coming from full size cars, I’ve never heard of intentionally droop limiting the rear shocks. Is your reason for needing them due to mechanical interference or for setup?
@@HuntTam these are the fronts and the car runs a zero droop setup in the front. Rear has about an inch of droop
Why Angry?
Just a saying 😉
Those minimum speeds 😍
If you're a competent driver a Ralt RT4 will make you look brilliant.
Way cool! I'd love to know where those Lancaster Mustangs are now?
Thanks for the Awesome upload! Seeing, hearing, & feeling these go past at Manfield as a kid is one of my fondest memories! Ford out front 🏁
Awesome Nostalgia...I went to Wings & Wheels at Ohakea around this time as a kid! One of the best days of my life !!!
Hi from Australia, It can't be 1952 there is an MGTF which wasn't in production until 1954 ?
Have updated the title to 1954
You're hair grows a lot in 8 months
Thanks for your valuable insight
What's the purpose of the black tape process?
There is a sharp angle on the shaft, if I push the seal over it unprotected then the seal gets damaged.
Thanks for the reply, I'm debating on sending my 8300s out or just front the tools and such for many more years of DIY rebuilds. What is the approx cost for all the tooling?@@swiftdb4
@@hamburgerman187 not much, it's about the same cost to get someone to rebuild them versus buying all the stuff and doing it yourself. Obviously it gets much cheaper the second time. Also comes in handy if you want to check or change the nitrogen pressure.
really cool James! I would be interested in the component work you do. I plan to rebuild a db4 this winter and am not too sure where to start, but going to dive in.
Nice, feel free to make contact if you get stuck on anything, I've now talked to people with DB4s from all around the world that have come across my videos 😅
Hi James, I owned this DB4 1998-2005. Raced it in western U.S. Last I heard it went to a Kiwi on the South Island. Great to see you having fun with it.
Very cool, it's in hibernation at the moment while I build a couple of motors for it. Whoever did the shocks on it before it came over had a good idea, also some interesting geometry tweaks. I've tried taking it in a few directions but always end up similar to what Grant brought it into NZ with. In saying that the settings etc worked a lot better once I replaced the tub. I believe the story was that it had a big crash prior to coming to NZ and the tub it had was more of a placeholder being an early one.
thanks! really ,helpful video. been wondering how these work
'PromoSM' 😞
That's a great spirited drive. I love the outside passes ! I've been looking forward to this for a long time. Is it your father who owns it ? I sold the car to Max Walker in about 97 in virtually rebuilt ready to go condition with only the engine to be assembled. ( All new pistons / Carroll's even new heads. I also purchased all Don Halpin's remaining Repco F5000 bits including top casting and other things. Had spare wheels and suspension, chassis had been done by Brian Shead although he said it didn't need much. Few rose joints and not much else. He fitted new new bladders and a few other things. It all went with the car. I was disappointed to hear that he had just virtually stripped all the good and new stuff and the spares and delivered it to you in a fairly down state. Great to see it going and being driven well and energetically !
Thanks for the comment. Yes it's my fathers, the plan was just to dust it off for a weekend and see what it had. Its turned into quite extensive work following this video as there were quite a few problems that stopped me getting 100% from it, for this reason a second time out may be in order once I conclude the work.
@@swiftdb4 Good effort anyway. And yeah I've never heard tyre squeal from a F5000 before but it looks promising here
When C And C autos in Adelaide bought the car it was pretty ordinary looking in sor t of as developed condition. They wanted to tidy it up and get it looking good prior to running it. Keith Poole was to drive it and on the first trial he said it was horrible. Completely undrivable and said it had tried to kill him. So one of them ( I think it was Craig ). Rang Jamie and was going off his nut saying what an evil thing it was and so on. Jamie asked him what they'd done in since they acquired the car. He said th they'd really done nothing. Upon more questioning about their exact moves with the car he said that they'd just tidied it up and mentioned that they had taken all the suspension off and had it all chromed. When Jamie questioned him he said of course we did the wheel alignment when we put it all back together. So Jamie got on a plane to Adelaide. Sure enough they had done the wheel alignment. They had just forgotten to check that the car was actually in the middle of those nicely aligned wheels ! After Jamie correcting it the car showed really well. Keith Poole was a very competent driver. Things went badly for C & C autos and so the car fell into disuse. Along with the OR1 it was damaged in a fire at C & C. The business collapsed under a bit of a cloud as I remember it and I think one of the partners actually did a bit of time in the old grey bar hotel. Both Gardos cars were acquired by Barry Singleton and that's when Barry Lock's involvement began. Repairing the cars initially and later converting to ground effects. Car didn't run with ground effects beforehand the cut off date for historic F5000 so can't do so now unless the rules have changed. The other thing about the car is that it can run with either Chev or Repco power having used both way back then. Maybe that's not an issue any more either ? Kevin Bartlett told me " Don't get involved with the Repco engine..it'll break your heart ". I'd spend too much money on the engine by that time but I understand none of it was showing when your father got the car. Are you running Chev or Repco ?
What a performance by every one and thing involved ... one can almost sense that TR 2 (and if '54 possibly 3) waiting list stretch .. I have also seen 'telegraph poles march across the road' from long hours at the helm . but lying on a chesterfield with tea and cookies in comparison 🌷:)
Amazing James good to see you in a v8!
What a beautiful little racetrack. Looks like a new surface...
Welcome back old girl. I remember seeing you at AIR back in the day.
Driven at AIR by Keith Poole.
P r o m o s m 🤭
Yellow car at the end had serious grunt on the straights, lovely driving
Proper racing. Your lines and braking showed you had the speed, and made the guy in front really work for the win. Great driving.
the Lola seems to have a few more BTU's, best Chris gets a new engine for you.
Dont know how you ran 2 single seaters in one meeting James. I was buggered just watching that! Well done
A couple of things; 1. Man those laps fly by fast... 2. I know you said you're tired, (and explained why you started at the back) but oh to have started further up the grid...
yeah, what could have been, still a huge success of a weekend where all the work put in paid off
Awesome, simply awesome (and I'm only a couple of minutes in). Thanks James!
What time you racing tomorrow
Around 11:30 and 3pm
What’s top speed down the back straight extension?
234ish around 1 and the straights. Aiming for 240 tomorrow with some changes
Ended up at 242
Was awesome to see you guys run live. A shame the other Atlantic's didn't work. Hope to see you back with a bigger field.
Great drive. Some very close racing there and a great watch
Nice work James
Awesome drive James.
2nd one looked scary!
Sure was
Looks like an awesome corner, nicely set up pass too
How good is your car compared to the rest? Looks great.
Its a lot better in the corners and brakes, a little bit slower on the straights though
@@swiftdb4 Very impressive. Guessing you need a dyno and lots of money to fix the speed issue?
It's making peak horsepower, the slight slower straight line is just a result of carrying a lot more aero at top speed than the F3 cars
@@swiftdb4 A couple laps behind you would be quite a lesson.
Awesome, what a difference.
Beautiful video and car, James. What kind of camera is that? The coloring looks incredible!
Thanks, camera is GoPro 10. When I race this weekend I am going to try GoPro 11 mini
how good would it have looked to have a camera on the driver. so much steering input.
amazing sound and car. And are you going to the Historic grand prix at Taupo?
Yes, driving Saturday and Sunday
@@swiftdb4 Ok get some wins 👍
@@f5kJosh 3 wins from 3 starts :)
