Colorado Solid Axle Swap: Tearing Down The Front End - Coiled Colorado EP.1 | Sully's Shed
WoodPrix woodworking plans are nice for that.
Do you have a video of how you did the counter top?
I don’t sorry mate, just what is in this video for now. Is there a part you’re unsure of that I can help with?
Hey mate, any chance you could pass on the details of the engineer you have certifying the sas? I’ve got an ironhide kit coming for my D22 and want to consult an engineer about welding specs and requirements of NDT etc
Lindsey Stone is his name mate. Stone engineering
Great work man. kitchen came out perfect
Thanks Peter, glad you like it!
Awesome outdoor kitchen! Great job.
Cheers Bob, thanks for watching mate.
Oath can't wait mate!
Hows the build going? As for the bar i reckon if the bottom wing tube had a kink upwards so its not a straight line 👌
Hey mate! Haven’t touched it for a while but things are happening in the background. I’m working on a caravan for the family at the moment, so that will be the next video and then back onto the ute hopefully.
Perfect...I was looking for some ideas to do an outdoor area
Thanks mate, glad I was able to help.
Looks awesome mate - can also confirm the audio problem in your monologue sections in the 2nd half of the vid
That’s mate, might be a mic issue
Strange. Sometimes the audio on worked in the right headphone.
Thanks for the feedback mate, I wonder if anyone else had that problem. I might watch it with headphones on too.
@@sullysshed no worries. Loved the vid mate. Thank you for sharing
@@poerava no worries mate, thanks for watching
All i would say maybe better thumbnail for the video
Thanks mate, it’s all been a learning curve.
Have you got any info on putting a handbrake on the back of the colorado transfer case?
I don’t sorry mate. I looked into it briefly but changed routes so didn’t go any further. They make a kit for hiluxes if you wanted to get an idea of how it’s done.
@@sullysshed No worries. I thought there might have been an option out there for a transfer with a slip yoke, not a flange on the back. I think some jeep transfers people have made a new shaft that would allow for a flanged output. I've got a 4j in my GQ and have put subaru brumby calipers on the rear for the handbrake. While they work I wouldn't trust them. That aside I am stoked to stumble across this channel, doing a great job for a chippy (I'm a brickie) and making things look achievable for most who know how to wield a grinder. I've got project binky to blame for my build
@@bennyjahmin3953 I’ll be swapping the factory transfer case out to a Jackaroo transfer case at some point in the build mate. One of the benefits of it is that it gets rid of the slip yoke.
@@sullysshed Other than putting a hand brake on, is there any other benefit to the flange over the slip yoke? And any other benefits to the jackaroo transfer? They still have some sort of electronic actuator don't they? Just a manual lever for high to low?
If you get the right one it’s gets rid of all the electric actuators and you can get reduction gears for it too.
Any reason why you went a high mount winch over a traditional low mount for a regular 4wd?
Hi mate, a couple of reasons. Rope speed, air freespool, reliability/strength and rope capacity are the main advantages. The only advantage the low mount had was that it would fit easily in most bars.
Can we expect another vid soon??
New episode dropped today mate! Cheers
wicked videos! your giving me the confidence to SAS my rodeo
Thanks mate! Definitely give it a crack.
Awesome work. Great build to watch
Cheers mate, I’m glad you’re enjoying it!
This is the coolest build on youtube! Are you going to clean up the entire chassy?
Thanks heaps mate! Once I get the four link done in the rear I’ll go through and give it all a birthday I think.
Such detail into this build, love it
Thanks mate!
It's looking good Rob
Cheers mate, thanks for watching!
Great build so far!
Thanks mate!
Love your work mate. Can i ask how you learned how to undertake this monumental project? Is there an instruction guide for this or are you completely winging it?
Thanks mate! I’m pretty much winging it. I’m a carpenter by trade which helps with the hand skills. I learnt mostly from reading a lot of 4WD forums back when they were a thing, mainly Pirate4x4 and outerlimits as well as a lot of UA-cam. I’ve also learnt from working with mates who are either mechanics or boilermakers as well. I built a comp truck/offroad race car to different levels over 10 years that has given me the experience to tackle this as a custom project. This is a big reason behind starting the channel for me, if one person learns something from me or it gives them the confidence to give it a crack themselves then I’ll be happy.
Impressive stuff mate, really enjoying the build!
Cheers mate, appreciate the kind words.
What thickness steel are you using for the reinforcing plates?
4mm 250mpa steel, I would have preferred to use 3mm 350mpa steel but couldn’t find a sheet locally.
How shit are they! circlip in diff mount for cv removal absolutelyridiculous, and the lower diff centre bolt for draining oil
The worst ideas I’ve seen, up there with torsion bars.
this is such a cool build mate. Havent seen any youtubers do a custom job all by themselves. keep it up!
Thanks legend, I appreciate the kind words!
Are you going to coil convert the rear or just do a leaf over diff conversion? Loving the build. Keep it up
Thanks mate, I go through all that in EP 1. But yeah triangulated 4 link rear mate.
Really enjoying your build. Let us know some detail about what else is in the plan such as wheel type and size, any plan for engine tweeks etc.
Thanks mate, I’ll try and include more of that in the next video.
are you selling all the details/ plans kinda like ironhide customs. if that makes sense.
Nah I hadn’t planned to mate, don’t really want to take any work away from Ironhide. They support events locally and are good people so would prefer not to.
I've been looking forward to this video! Love it mate. Keen for the next !
Thanks legend!
Awesome work Rob, love it. Series is awesome. Content is awesome, investing in a microphone when doing live talks would be good. Voiceover sounds great
Thanks for the feedback mate! I’ve been using a Rode Go mic since the start, all the audio is recorded using the same mic, might need a lav mic maybe?
Great vid. Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks mate, good news for you then, episode 4 has just gone live tonight! Cheers
Nice one 👍
Thanks mate!
Great video! He's so knowledgeable and easy on the eyes.
😘😘😘
Nice safety squint
😂😂😂😂 60% of the time it works every time
Great work mate! Definitely a good score with the radius arms
Absolutely, couldn’t believe my luck tbh.
Great vid mate. Man i love these utes but hate the torsion sus
Yeah they really are a terrible idea.
What increase in GVM are you hoping to achieve using 80 series diffs?
I should be able to run the same GVM as the 80 series
The Ironhide SAS kit is like, $15k isn't it?
Nah it’s not that much mate. That might be the installed price.
yeah thats installed and engineered
@@sullysshed AHh righo. Yeah $15k is outrageous
@@brettellis3948 I’m not sure I’d say outrageous mate, there is a lot of work involved and people will pay for the convenience of having it done for them.
Wicked build series so far mate. Just thought I’d ad aswell there’s plenty of blokes out there with high viewing/ subscribers rate especially on their build series with longer timed videos. I’m sure a lot of us blokes would be all for 20+ minute videos.
Cheers mate. Still figuring it all out haha
20-30 minutes vids are the go hey, analytics will tell you shorter is better but that’s because most content is crap. This is great content which means people will happily watch longer 👍 side note- the front diff definitely does have a drain plug and a fill plug 😉
Thanks mate, I might aim for a bit longer, cheers for the support. I figured it would have to have a drain and fill somewhere, not sure why they don’t make it obvious, haha.
Love the videos mate, longer videos would be good! I’m gonna be doing a SAS too but using the ironhide kit One thing tho there is a drain bung for the front diff, it’s the lowest bolt on the housing, doesn’t look like a drain but it is haha
Haha cheers mate, rookie mistake
Hey I’m looking at their kit aswell. Wonder if it’s worth just getting the basic kit and then buying a wrecked or chassis from an 80 series. The kits quite expensive with no steering box etc
@@bonz3580 The kit takes a lot of the thinking out the job I imagine. The next episodes will show the process of the work behind figuring out how to make it all work.
@@sullysshed yeh definitely, might get the basic kit and get my own diff etc
@@bonz3580 That’s the option I would have gone for mate, get the bare basic to take the thinking out of it and get the other bits yourself.
Mate id happily sit through a 20 plus minute video of you meticulously going through this process thoroughly. Great vid, cheers
Cheers mate!
Hi mate, can you go more in depth about that “aggressive driving style” a bit more 😂
😂😂😂
Haha I hear that so often “doesn’t suit my driving style” 😂 translation “I’m a shit driver” I just shake my head and say so change your driving style mate
great build series, longer videos would be mint
Thanks mate, it’s a tricky one, I want to make the videos as concise as I can so people don’t get too bored. Haha
Whoever designed torsion bars and thought that was a great idea is definitely in hell
😂😂😂
Hey mate, love these videos. Just one thing I’d love to know would be budget and possibly money spent when it’s complete kinda thing. Plenty of Colorado owners wanting to do it and having some sort of budget in mind would be ideal before starting. Cheers
Thank mate, I had planned to do a budget wrap up at the end of the build but I might keep track of it through the build as well. Might try and get that in the next episode. Cheers.
When will u drop the next part of the video and how much do u recan this will cost roughly to do
Hey mate, episode 2 is going live today at 5pm QLD time. Not sure what it will cost to be honest mate and could be lots of variables depending on what suspension you choose.
Excited for this!
Awesome video! It’s great to see these kind of builds on the rc Colorado’s. I’m looking at doing a full built series of mine as there’s just no videos at all. I’d love to go sas. You might just give me inspiration!!!
Cheers mate, that's my main motivation for doing the videos really. I have learnt so much from UA-cam and 4WD forums back in the day, if someones gets something out of it that helps them with their build then it's worth it.
@@sullysshed yea that’s it aye, good on you. I’d be interested to know what it will cost you. I’m sure everyone will want to know but good stuff man.
@@bradsta9751, I will certainly do a cost break down at the end. Might even track it through the build too.
Great video mate. are you going to be using a kit, Or fabricating it all yourself?
Cheers mate! I won’t be using a kit. I’ll be covering a lot more on that in the next couple of episodes.
Awesome video mate, what car hoist are you using?
Looks like a JD! Also interested, I'm in the market
Cheers mate! It's a Tufflift 4 ton clear floor.
