Proton Experimental

I just installed and played. Tried more proton and proton-ge versions, but the experience was suffering as the fps was too low to be playable. I am staying at KSP1 for now.

I ran it on desktop with nvidia gpu only. The weird thing is that I needed to install dxvk with winetricks/protontricks, otherwise the game stuck on loading screen. Try it, maybe it will help.

@@feedjo768 Hey I solved it. Turns out my Nvidia drivers weren't installed correctly so I guess the game didn't see the gpu

Hi, well it's been some time so I don't remember, but the video was released id 11/2020 and that time the recent version was 5.13-1 following this github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/releases?page=2. So I would recommend to start with this version, and maybe try different versions if it won't work. Also check this - www.protondb.com/app/6060. Proton 6.3-x has great results too.

It's quite a long time, so I don't remember, but I believe this is a Steam version. Nowadays the easiest way to play this game is simply download it with Steam and run with SteamPlay/Proton. Maybe you will need to turn on the SteamPlay function for all games in settings.

Hi, it's easy.. The names of buttons and menus may differ because I have PlayOnLinux in my native language and I don't know the exact appellations. 1. run PlayOnLinux and open Settings. 2. create new 32-bit wineprefix (I have wine 7.4-staging but it may work with other version as well) 3. click "add" button on main screen and choose "install non-listed app" at the bottom left side. 4. find your path to settlers 4 installation files and install the game. 5. wait for installation to finish, create launcher in last PoL installation step and play. It is better to setup virtual desktop in wine configuration (second tab in PoL settings) because the game is pretty old and runs in 800x600 by default. If you want fullHD resolution, continute to next step 6. download widescreen fix file (see vid. description) 7. in PoL settings go to the last tab and click on "run .exe in this wineprefix" and map widescreen fix file to run it. 8. Finish the installation, run the game and see if it works.

I have no suggestions, but just now I tried it again on freshly installed fedora a and it works just fine. The main problem of this game is performance. Today I got above 200 fps on low settings 1280x720, but only about 20 fps on medium with same res. It seems to be very badly optimized, or maybe my GTX1060 is simply too old.

That sucks sorry! I am lucky on mint it runs but i have minor to medium lag issues I had to reduce the graphics settings although my pc can run the game on best graphics settings. Good luck it's an awesome game with the steam deck games may work better for us on linux.

Hi, I usually put down in the video description if I did something special to make the game running. But it's not this case, it seems this one ran just fine itself. However, the video is about a year old, did you try some older versioms of proton?

@@feedjo768 thanks for the feedback. I have the latest version of proton - bleeding edge and garuda linux as rolling release. But I guess I need a new PC anyhow - mine is an old lady already.

Hi, Mint and Xubuntu were my gate to linux world but I don't use them anymore. I'm on Debian with xfce for some time now. Many good distros are based on debian, for example SteamOS which is dedicated for gaming, and (x)ubuntu and also mint as well.

Well, that time I ran the Epic Launcher with Lutris (installed with the install script on lutris web page). Then I tried different wine and proton versions in Lutris runner settings. Nowadays I use Heroic Launcher because it is much easier to switch wine/proton versions. Try and see.

I have no idea, but some guys on protondb say that they had to use "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" launch option to get the game working. Try and see if it helps.

Hi, you need to have SteamPlay enabled for all games in your steam settings. Then just install and run the game with steam launcher. I have tried it just now, few minutes ago and it works just fine with proton 6.3-5 and it runs with vanilla wine too, using "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" launch command. However the performace is much better with proton.
