    This really brings back memories of childhood. It was such an adventure crossing. I remember doing it in the 1950s. The ferryman actually cranked a great handle to wind the chain! Those were the days!

    When turning short round in these boats you must give it full wellie ahead to get the stern swinging followed by full astern. Do this as many times as required to make the turn.

    Know PH Bridge well been to the Broads Many times, apart from poor judgement and poor skill levels the main problem here is you cant reverse a boat like a car ! And secondly IF you intend going under the Bridge you need to line up on the centreline at least 150M from the bridge with enough speed on so you have good manoeuvrability. In this case there was a bit of a crosswind also.

    I can remember me my wife and son sat having a drink at the Wherry Hotel I think, on Oulten Broad. When someone had tied their broadlands cruiser up when the tide was in. Only to sit there and watch as the river level went down and the boat being stranded on rocks.

  • @bobwalsh172
    @bobwalsh172 9 місяців тому

    The wind was probably a bigger problem than the tide. Cabin cruisers generally have a down-by-the-stern trim, which makes the bow more apt to make leeway, in this case frustrating the initial attemp to turn. It won't have helped that the bow was in mid-stream and the stern near the bank, so that the tide would have added to the net forces acting on the bow to frustrate the turn. It's easy to see how this would have confused an inexperienced skipper - who deserves sympathy and some credit for at least doing no damage. The easier way to depart from the staithe would've been to make fast the port headrope, let go the starboard head and stern ropes, wait for the stern to swing out around 130 degrees under the forces of the wind and tide, let go forward, go slow astern for a few seconds, then put the helm hard to starboard, go full ahead, and make the turn in one go. And yes, hindsight is a wonderful thing...😉

    Ahoy there , thank you for tis 'update' much appreciated , as I lived at that 'Ferry' many many years ago now , back in them 1940s and 1950s , much has not changed at all , but there have been slight changes , mainly , of course , that those whom I knew have 'passed on' now . Might ask though , are the new defenses to stop the SEa from breaking into the 'Ferry' during any Storms , ? or are they to keep the Flood Waters from engulfing the 'Ferry' again ?

    Lack of training. Not everybody has instinctive boat handling skills. At least he didn't panic and gun it whacking the stern off the bridge. You wouldn't get away with that on the Shannon with 4kts downstream flow and a breeze to interfere.Lots of charter boats implaced on bridges this August with the river in full winter flood levels.

    Landguard Lodge has always fascinated me, even as a child, in some respects the main house reminds me of a castle in design.... History wise, it was owned in the 19th century by an Anglo Irish judge George Darrell Shee who died at the house in 1895..... From the 1940s the house and surrounding land became Landguard Caravan Park, which as you stated closed in October 2022 and the site sold to the neghbouring park holidays - Suffolk sands caravan park - who have now turned most of the Languard site pitches into an extension for their park....I am not sure if the house was part of the deal as they have erected a large wooden fence around Landguard Lodge and the neighbouring cottage..... It would make a great club house for the caravan park or holiday flats as stated in the video.... One of the site workers at park holidays thought it may be turned in to an ice cream parlour, but that may have been a tongue in cheek statement!! Be a shame for the house to go to waste, In fact it's neighbour the old Suffolk sands club house which was the original manor after which manor terrace was named was allowed to become dilapidated and subsequently demolished around 2013......

    How are the Broads tidal ??

    • @HomemadeTV
      @HomemadeTV Рік тому

      The Broads are directly conected to the sea at Great Yarmouth. As you get further from that point, the tidal difference decreases, and the high and low water times become later and later. So for example high water at Yarmouth tomorrow is 4pm; and at Potter Heigham it is 4 hours later. The tidal difference, low to high, can be up to a couple metres at Yarmouth, but the tidal range at Potter is much less - a foot or 18 inches, and it can be affected by wind, too. You can find more info on the Broads Authority website.

    A lot of the time, the kids that carry knives are of a certain ethnicity, the problem then is you start doing stop and search on them, and then they will say the police are being racist, the more they know they can play the race card, the more they know they can get away with carrying knives. Sometimes its because they're involved in gangs.

    Trouble is that to drive a car you have to undergo training and pass a test. To fly a plane is an even bigger test and training. With a boat you get 10 minutes if you’re lucky! Many people are not exactly expert at driving a car so why expect them to instantly be an expect at handling a boat.

    I'm 47 and can remember pre privatisation, each area had its own electricity board, YEB (Yorkshire Electricity Board) round here. Every town and city, and even some smaller towns had a gas board and an electricity board shop, where you went to pay your bill. The small town near where I lived as a kid had an electricity shop (can't remember if it had a gas board shop), i know the nearby big town definitely had both. I think it was a good a good idea at the time, but over the years the companies have just got too greedy, because they know we've got no other choice but to pay them. Although let's not forget the train companies are slowly reverting back to public ownership, Northern Rail, LNER and TransPennine Express all government owned at the moment.
