I had the privilege of covering him as a sportscaster on the Auburn football station and he was the best I ever saw, was on the field for his only game against Herschel Walker who got ten yards with his offensive line

Vivid was so, so important for me. I was 16 when it came out and I was a suburban Surrey (near London uk) whiter than white white boy😂 the album opened my eyes in every direction. Musically and culturally. I'm sure I am not alone in this experience. The band played the Town and Country Club London that year and I was there early for their arrival at the stage door. They all signed my album (except for Wil - Corey's words "he's hiding in the bus" 😂). I asked Vernon for a pick, and he went upstairs (presumably to his guitar case) came back down and slammed a pick in my hand "don't say I never gave you nuthin!". The gig was amazing obviously, at this time I had only barely heard of Bad Brains so black guys doing this was beyond my ken. But the bit that stuck with me most almost, was this beautiful tall black guy standing next to me, singing along at the TOP of his voice to the opening words of Open Letter perfectly. The metal world was so white back then, so almost everyone reading this will have no idea how huge this whole thing was. Vernon. Corey. Wil. Muzz. (And later Doug). Legends.

That was a great moment in college football history, very similar to "The Play" back in 1982 when Cal Berkeley beat Stanford and John Elway and Rod Gilmore.

some Guitarist teachers say Vernon's not a real guitarist- please he's musical and his playing is outstanding - he's more an abstract player and an artist- Vernon has full control of what he plays - I took to him and this band I got it-- I saw them at Janice landing not that long ago and they were amazing still -- Vernon still holds his own and I bet most of those that attend are there to see Vernons amazing guitar work - thank you for all the great music🤘

saw them open Lollapalooza at the Starplex in Dallas... Heard of them, but didn't think much of them - they were early in the day.... Lollapalooza was the first comcert/festival I'd been to that had all the "other" stuff (meaning art, interactive stuff, trapeze, sculptures, blah blah....).... So we were wandering around looking at stuff - then suddenly that opening riff came on... So powerful... Everyone stopped and looked toward the stage and looked at each other like, "wtf?" - then a couple heads started bobbing here and there.... then a couple more... by a minute in - the entire crowd was going nuts. Perfectly loud - couldn't possibly talk to anyone, so everyone just started jamming. Great start to an awesome concert. Hard to believe it was that long ago.... (yes - they lost the crowd after that firat song, but made for a good time to go get beer, bathroom, food, whatever - but that opening was awesome)

At the end of the last century, when rock music was at its best, it's not a secret for those who grew up in those years, like me, that musicians were way better. And I'm sure the members of the new generation know about it, partly because of what the social media say about them: "In the XX century, if a musician wanted to be successful, he had to be talented."
