      Right? It really pushes boundaries. Going in blind probably made it hit even harder. I didn’t know there’s an unrated version. That must be insane.

    because the actors and overall cinematography were good, the storyline itself was a 6th grade english class extra credit assignment. a bit more effort in the writing would have made it an actual good movie, maybe.

    • @thesuccessfulscreenwriter
      @thesuccessfulscreenwriter 9 годин тому

      Fair point! Strong performances and cinematography can only carry a film so far if the story doesn’t hit. What kind of writing changes do you think could’ve elevated it?

      @@thesuccessfulscreenwriter I feel like there were multiple boxes they couldve checked yet chose to not dive deeper. Whether that was into the dad, the dads friend and son, the original wolfman, the disease itself, a cure. just overall left with the feeling that i only got half a story. and the time skip was massive as well lol.

    I’d suggest looking into the Jungian concept of the Shadow. With the looming shadow imagery in the film and the fact that Eggers’s wife is a psychologist, I believe that concept and the repression of sexuality, desire, and the parts of us that a deemed unacceptable by society seems central to the plot.

    • @thesuccessfulscreenwriter
      @thesuccessfulscreenwriter 16 годин тому

      Wow, that’s a brilliant take! The Jungian Shadow concept really adds a deeper layer to the film’s themes. The repression of desire and what society deems unacceptable definitely feels central. Thanks for sharing this insight!

    That is such a good point: HOW DO YOU BITE A CHEST??? I didn't think of that XD I think unhinging his jaw like a snake, and to show that would have been actually SCARY. I was not scared by this movie after that first jump scare 2 mins in. ... But it was probably that loopy-loop straw XD XD XD

  • @ThisIsJessPaul
    @ThisIsJessPaul 7 днів тому

    My friend of a friend mentioned that she thought the movie was too "r*pey", so I went into the theater with that in mind to discern for myself. I'm only now realizing how much the themes could parallel statutory or assault of a minor. But I thought before the climax, he said "I will visit you 3 nights and you will (make your decision)" but now I'm not sure if I misheard/misunderstood if he was giving her a choice or claiming that she would succumb to him against her will on the 3rd night.

  • @ThisIsJessPaul

    INTERESTING! I protagonist centric villain? I never thought about there being anything but! I'm going to think about movies that vary with that.

  • @ThisIsJessPaul
    @ThisIsJessPaul 7 днів тому

    I actually feel really validated that Geoff and Katie had similar reactions to mine with this movie. I personally was not confused by any of the themes, in fact, I thought that though in lovely older English parlance, the plot points were pretty spelled out with every piece of dialogue. I thought the themes of female repression being conquered by our protagonist saving the day was fine, but nothing too new. I do really love Katie's context of feminine sexual suppression in that specific time, though. That part didn't occur to me as much as Ellen's own authority over her decisions not being respected.

    Enjoyed the podcast 👌🏼 As for your question about inaction, I think it's a case to case basis. If an individual has the necessary tools to cope with a situation and chooses inactivity then obviously it's an active choice. However, I wouldn't call it decision making if someone experiences complete paralysis for the first time as a byproduct of a highly stressful situation. Nor would I blame a child whose brain isn't biologically fully developed for inaction in particular circumstances. In my opinion, it's a philosophical gray area.

    I wouldn't mind having an extended version with the Skull Cowboy. I'm not a fan of CGI at all, but I would be for using CGI to have Brandon doing the Skull Cowboy scenes and all the scenes they could not do due to Brandon's death. Not as a replacement for what was released, just as something else we could view.

    Actually the movie is about: How totalitarianism in the modern age can lead to disastrous results bcuz there are THINGS THAT COMPUTERS & AUTOMATION SHOULD NOT be tasked with... cue the final scene & the pan out to show the ubiquitous camera's that everyone today accepts everywhere without questioning like they are fine with being spied on by the mossad & corporofascists thru their "smart" phones- which as you see with the pager bombs in the Holy Land aka PALESTINE can easily be used to HARM rather than help by the cabalist satanist's- so it is NO coincidence that "howard" was made manifest in the exact same type of camera like howard is the next gen of that 360 ubiquitous in America camera... so NOPE- you supposed "professional" movie people are dum dums &/or cabalists corrupt to the core trying to put everyone to sleep while the screenwriter was trying to wake everyone up warning them to what the NON HEBREW NON Semite rhymes with stews are up to establishing a global surveillance police state that will make the 1700 year Roman Empire [east & west] & the 1 000 year REICH of the british- rhymes with stews system >>> look like child's play- after all if it IS a computer in control of the concentration camp like the Holy Land has been turned into then who do you appeal to? You can't argue, persuade, appeal to a program... so you totally flubbed it you did NOT nail it at all!

    The way i see the future with AI is collaboration, research, and brainstorming. Not just for your generating the story, but also for hunting and helping resolve plot holes. So is great for getting past writers block. It's potential is only getting better with greater token limits and agent management. Still, the ability for AI to come up with genuinely original solutions to problems won't be fully capable as humans for at least a few years yet. It's coming, no question, but it's not there yet. I'm tinkering with SudoWrite now.

I needed the inspiration and I'm going to have the cast/crew watch it so they can get a sense of the feel we are looking to create. We do SEL (social emotional learning) projects. • @thesuccessfulscreenwriter
      @thesuccessfulscreenwriter 9 місяців тому

      In my book The Guide For Every Screenwriter I discuss building characters after you discover your concept then theme. Essentially you don’t know what kind of character to build until you know what you are trying to say with your story thematically. You see your central character is the living embodiment of your theme. Their journey directly reflects what you are trying to say with your story. So I’d recommend begin with your theme first. Then build your character.
