Ford Maverick custom subwoofer build, Skar Audio VD 8
Переглядів 9 тис.2 роки тому
I built a volcano style fiberglass enclosure back in 2013 and thought I'd try it again. Measured the air space I had to work with, then found a matching subwoofer. Ended up going with a Skar Audio VD 8 D4 (8" in diameter, dual voice coil, in 4 ohs). I wired it in parallel for a final impedance of 2 ohms. The amp is a Skar Audio RP-350.1D, rated at 350 watts rms @ 1 ohm. Hard wired in a cheap li...

As always, not telling you how to do it. Just showing you how I did it. If I were to do this again I would go with component door speakers without a tweeter. However, the coaxial speakers sound great even though the tweeter is barely touching the factory speaker grill. Definitely install sound deadening if you have the time and money. I chased around a few different rattles in the passenger doo...

Saw these on this Maverick overland build: ua-cam.com/video/kFaSATXL6H0/v-deo.html He used part number 60901. After a short conversation in the comments he let me know he ended up using a 1" spacer under the bladders. He said part number 60902 comes with 1" taller bladders and wouldn't need spacers. www.amazon.com/dp/B018O94MXO?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Fun, cheap, quick, and functional project.

Ford Ranger stubby antenna fits Ford Maverick

Maverick uses some of the same parts as its big brothers, like, the third brake light (F-150), etc. I figured the antennas would also be interchangeable. I wanted to answer a few specific questions I've had and some comments I've seen on other videos. The car seat being number one. I remembered seeing a card slot on Doug DeMuro's review. I was sad the slot wasn't there, but learned the hybrids will have it. Yes, a lot of people showed up to view the truck in the 4 hour window it was at the dealership. Worked on these for 20 years. Such a simple vehicle.
Did the airbags affect the fuel mileage .😂😂😂😂😂 im just being a dick , I know it doesn't, but there are too many people asking if some mods affect the fuel consumption. Things like the stone chip guard on the hood of your truck.
Thanks for the idea! Next project for me.

How they holding up after a year ? any good ?
@luckyPiston yup they're great! Been through a bunch of snow storms. Still look new.

Im thinking in installing these air lift to my lariat 2024, you thing it can support 1500Lb of load?
Awesome job what size are your tires and rims?

Thanks for sharing. Getting ideas for fiberglassing sub box for my Maverick
I also have a board, but it's not adjustable. You have the sliding rail clamps like I do and a solution that would attach to the siding clamps would be great. I found no DIY solution, but there is an OEM divider (~ $300 USD) that snaps into the sliding clamps. I'm going to see if I can fabricate something up ....
looks professional good job
Well done!
Out of curiosity, what is your low pass filter cut off point? I'm not the biggest fan of sealed. And I know these VD subs do awesome in ported enclosures. I have done ported with the 10 and 12 versions of this line. And have been blown away by their performance. But now I have good friend with an 8 in a .35cuft sealed enclosure. And we are having trouble getting it to blend well with the rest of his system. I think he has the x-over point set to low. He thinks it's a cone area issue. And wants to switch to the 10. So I'm just curious what your settings are. Thanks for the vid and insight.
Sounds great
Will this work on a 2023 hybrid maverick lariat?
@MikeJones-td4fq sorry man, it won't. Haven't seen s lift for the hybrid yet. Only lowering springs for the mini truck look.
I wonder if taking a 2x12 and cutting a notch on both ends would l;et it fit.
Inspired me to try my own build. You did an awesome job. Box looks amazing. You think there would have been enough room to make a 2 8” box behind the seat. Airspace wise. Just thought I would ask your opinion. Since you did such a killer build. Thank you
@theunwantedguestst.u.g.5261 thanks dude! My first thought was to go behind the seat, but it is pretty tight. I couldn't measure anything with the seat back locked. So, I went with the storage cubby.
I ended up buying boxes but would love to learn to fiberglass. Your box looks great.
On a plastic door , joke.
Love the wheels. I was gonna do KO2s also but after reading some forums a lot of people expressed concern of the weight being hard on the little Mav in the long run.
Does the sub play music all ranges like the back speakers or does it somehow just receive bass signal ?
I’m looking for these speakers but from what I can see they “don’t fit” and I can’t find the adapter. Mind sharing the link where you got yours?!
I just picked em up at my local Car Toys. You're right they don't technically fit. The tweeter does touch the inside in the speaker grill. I would just pick a 6 1/2" component speaker of your choice instead. Crutchfield sells vehicle specific speaker rings and harness adapters.
Great video. Did you keep the dash tweeter connected or did you disconnect it? If you left it connected how is the front stage imaging with tweeters in both the dash and door? Are you using factory headunit to power the new JL speakers? Thanks
I did leave the factory tweeters in. If I were to do it again, I would just get mid woofers and not component speakers. The highs are fine and not overpowering, but the tweeter domes do touch the door panels. And yes, the factory head unit is powering them. Definitely better than stock. Not winning any audio competitions lol.
Check out my subwoofer build video
wow you are an Audio GOD!
Which way did you unscrew yours? I think I broke mine. 😮😮
It's normal thread. Lefty loosy.
How much bass does push out? I made a box right around .35 cubic feet for under the seat and it just doesn’t put out much bass with this speaker. Idk what I’m missing, I even have it wired to 1 ohm. It works but just doesn’t hit. What is your impression? I’m running a cxa400 amp on it so it should be getting plenty of power
Bummer man. I would guess the input signal? I've been meaning to switch my input signal to my front speakers instead of the rear speakers. Sometimes my sub does sound kind of hollow or distant. I'm sure it's because I have a budget LOC and not the best bass input from the rear speakers. Certain songs though it does sound full and amazing.
@@keganmowery4223 I’m just clearly basing it off of testing my box in my ST I haven’t got the Maverick wired yet I plan on running larger 4 gauge wire and a larger kicker cxa800 and I’m going to run it at 2 ohm which would be 600 watts I’m hoping it sounds better then it did off the other amp
@@keganmowery4223 Only reason I don’t think it’s the input signal is I run my kicker compr 12 off the same amp and it hits, albeit it’s a lot larger ported box and a 12 but im under powering it and it hits This 8 should slap pretty good We will see with the Maverick , I’m using kickers rca’s that convert the speaker wire signal to rca and I’m using a t-harness off the factory wiring with the wires right of it. Maybe I will have a great signal. I’ll let you know how it works out
Do you think 31s would fit with no trimming?
From what I've seen and read, yes.
I as looking for a way to DM you but didn't see a way.... So I will ask my question here. 2024 Maverick XLT . I want to install a 120 volt outlet in the back of my center console. I was wondering what wiring is already inside the console of the XLT if I didn't get that 120 V outlet initially. It's my understanding that all the wiring harnesses are the same, regardless of which model (XL, XLT, Lariat) and that if you want to add some option later, the area (center console in this case) has plug connectors already there. Is that a safe assumption?
I haven't looked into this, but yes that makes sense. I would pop that cubby out and I bet there a dummy plug under there. Throw a multi meter on it to see start kind of voltage it has, 120vac or 12vdc. My truck does have the 120 outlet, so I haven't checked.
@@keganmowery4223 Yeah, I figured I'd have to partially remove the center console to see what's under there wiring wise. The outlet is designed to have a harness plug into the back of it.
@NativeSD53 Go for it. I bet a lot of people would follow your steps.
@@keganmowery4223 Indeed. I'll video all the step and post it on YT. Thanks
Someone else has 31 ¹/² inch tires on their maverick and the tires rub. I would imagine these rub pretty bad without trimming
Yeah it was a lot of work, but worth it. Haven't seen another Maverick in town with 32s. Had to relocate the ECU, make my own fender liners, and trim the pinch welds. Now it's a dream.
I made the mistake of putting a 2x10 in there (thanks to what ford says lol), went in fine, taking it out was a bitch
How did these bags affect your ride when unloaded?
No difference really. I run 7psi in them just daily driving. Minimum is 5psi per manufacturer. The psi actually doesn't fluctuate with temperature change like tires do. They're always dead on 7psi when I check them monthly or so.
Question - I see RCA cables, did you use those for your audio input? If so, where do they attach to the head unit? Or are you using the hi level inputs? I'm a novice with these things but I enjoy tinkering. Thanks!
Yeah, so I tied into my rear speaker wires ( + & - ) and soldered them into my cheapo LOC (left and right speaker inputs). The LOC has female RCA outputs. My amp has female RCA inputs. Most amp kits will come with a male/male RCA cable, even the cheap ones from Walmart or autoparts store. You could get a better quality signal if you tapped into the front speakers or if you got a premium LOC. Mine works great and sounds pretty good though.
what is LOC? @@keganmowery4223
Do they still this
Where did you get the seatbelts from? I have a 2000 M1123
It's been so long now. I think it was on ebay Motors. I just watched a bunch of reviews on em. I just made sure they had locking retractors.
Nice work, well done. Wanna do mine?
I’m also in the USA so where did you order it from?
I've ordered the last four trials bikes from Webcyclery.com. They're out of Oregon and really the only trials dealer in the states. They're great to work with.
love your attention to detail and you are straight to the point at every cut of your video.
Thx. I try to film the way I like to watch/ learn from others.
I would avoid putting any sort of stress on those tailgate tie downs, as those small screws securing the panel will just rip out of their plastic mounting points.
I quickly swapped out those tapered screws to different bolts. I had a different idea in mind at first. The panel isn't plastic. It's sheet metal. It works great for keeping things in place with bungees.
Rear speaker lacks bass signal. Its better to tap into the front speakers.
Yeah, maybe I'll try to swap em this year and see if it makes a difference.
@@keganmowery4223have you done it?
You change the EQ setting in Forscan to Flat, that fixes the bass rolloff from the factory.
None of these videos explain how to tap into the factory stereo to get a signal back to the amp.
It does. That's what the line output converter (LOC) is for. Front or rear speaker inputs + & - go into LOC, and subwoofer level signal goes out to the amp.
@@keganmowery4223 wouldn't you need a signal from all four speakers into the amp and then back out?
@@jeffrogers2180 with a fancier LOC you could. But a cheapo LOC works fine with a left and right input (front or rear speaker inputs). You could spend $30 or hundreds on an LOC.
Olá, uma pergunta, como está o funcionamento do kit lift hoje, teve algum problema com ele?
How have the CV Axels held up?
I'm just over 20k miles. No issues. Boots look good. Axle angle is basically straight when the truck is on the ground, so.
If you decide to keep the tweeter from rattling against the door panel I would add a felt strip cut in a circle to the tweeter to brace it against the panel but still allow the highs thru. I would not cut the factory door panel. (Just what I would try 1st)
do you have to use that wire harness on the door speakers? would it not work if you cut and spliced? or are they not positive and negative?
You could slice it. Just + and -.
Looks nice. Question... Have you had any issues with your CVs?
I'm just over 20k miles now with no issues.
@@keganmowery4223 that's awesome. I got a 2023 and received my lift yesterday. I'm excited to install. Again, truck looks sick.
@jamescastillo2473 sweet! You'll love it. 31s will work no prob. My 32s were a lot of trimming and rub a tiny bit at full lock. I can still make u-turns most the time without rubbing. Might try spacers in the future. If I get motivated I might try to clearance out the firewall. Fuse panel is at the passenger foot area though, so we'll see.
@@keganmowery4223 sorry I wasn't clear, but I actually got the 2.5 Super lift, so yes... Spacers. But, yours looks real nice. Thanks for the info. I actually am going with the recommended 245/65R17 that many said was best on the forums and UA-cam. I really do not feel like doing any trimming nor relaxation of parts. 😂
Thanks for the video. I was debating UR Universal or UR Universal PLUS size. They say Plus is for trucks and SUV's, Plus size are 4" longer, but seems like these are a good size, even with your taller tires. I love the Urethane flexibility on my previous cars (WRX & Focus ST) and with a truck I feel like I am more likely to hit some obstacles on them once in a while, like deep snow or light off-roading.
*THIS* is the video to follow. I watched another video where they took the time, effort, and coins ($) to use a factory adapter, and then just put the wires through the speaker hole, while mounting the speaker. I tried to reply saying, "You've just destroyed the lower end sound of that speaker," but IDK if my message "resonated" (pun intended). I like your hole idea, and I'd probably just add some silicone to reduce the potential to rattle, keep the wires in place and reduce the sound impact from air coming through and canceling out the speaker's lower end.
For anyone considering this versus a Ford MoCo "OEM" flap, they're pretty similar. The contour matches perfectly but they have an additional bracket at the bottom of the mud flap, that attaches to the undercarriage of the truck body to give them an additional point for strength. Most mud flaps just use screws, pop in plugs around the wheel opening alone. These work good, as my 2010 Camaro has these for 13 years now without issue, but I think an additional point at the bottom for a truck is a good idea (for Ford OEM mud flaps) but not 100% necessary if you want to go with these. With the Ford OEM you will need to drill one hole (unseen) on the undercarriage (plastic piece, so easy to drill 1/4"). On the passenger side there's a hole already there you re-purpose.
What is the color code for + & - on the rear speakers
I don't recall the colors, but the negative has a stripe. My budget line output converter was actually wired backwards in one channel. I had to flip the positive and negative wires from one speaker. Then both inputs started playing.
@@keganmowery4223 they all have stripes okay lol I'll meter them out
I live down the street from you and own a maverick as well. Is there anyway that I could pay you to hook up a sub in mine. You have probably seen me before, I own the Area 51 blue maverick. I don’t know how but I randomly came across your video and noticed you live in my neighborhood.
Hey neighbor. I wish I had the time man. It's a tedious messy process. Like most of my projects, I'm glad I did it in the end, but never want to do it again lol.
