From State Park to Sacred Lands: Tanka Fund Returns Buffalo to Fond Du Lac Homeland
In partnership with the Minnesota Zoo, Tanka Fund launched a successful initiative to return Buffalo to their Native lands and caretakers. With help from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Zoo, Buffalo were transported from Minneopa State Park to join the herd at Dancing Crane Ranch.
Owned by our rancher partners David and Patra Wise (Native Wise LLC), Dancing Crane is the oldest historical Native-owned ranch on the Fond Du Lac Reservation in Sawyer, MN.
This release is part of a larger effort to restore Buffalo populations on ancestral homelands. Upon arriving in Sawyer, the Buffalo were placed in a separate pen to acclimate and ensure a safe integration with the existing herd. During this period, three Buffalo managed to escape through a small hole in the fence and joined the main herd earlier than planned.
Caretaker Dave, recognizing the Buffalo’s strong instinct to reunite, made the decision to bring the herd together a day ahead of schedule to prevent injuries. The barriers were removed, and the two groups of Buffalo joyfully reunited, running, jumping, and exploring their shared ancestral lands. This moment powerfully symbolizes the Buffalo’s return to their Native homeland and the deep connection they share with it.
Key points:
- Historical Significance: The Buffalo were returned to Dancing Crane Ranch, owned by Tanka Fund rancher partners David and Patra Wise (Native Wise LLC). It is the oldest historical Native-owned ranch on the Fond Du Lac Reservation in Sawyer, MN.
- Effort to Restore Buffalo Populations: The release is part of a broader effort to restore Buffalo populations on their ancestral lands, reflecting a significant cultural and environmental endeavor.
- Unexpected Escape: During the acclimation period, three Buffalo managed to escape through a small hole in the fence, joining the main herd earlier than scheduled.
- Reunion of the Herd: Caretaker Dave decided to unite the two groups of Buffalo ahead of schedule to prevent injuries, symbolizing the Buffalo’s instinct to reunite and their deep connection to the ancestral lands.

Buffalo are Home!
I’m the purple with the plums
My little sister 😮
So awesome! I wish more zoos would work with Tanka Fund to return more buffalo to Native American ranchers! ❤
❤
Magical!
Have you given any of these magnificent bisons names? Is there one that has a dynamic personality? What grasses do they prefer? When do they run as a herd?
Beautiful people beautiful culture keep it alive ❤❤ Much respect ❤
Thank you for sharing my little one is in this video! 🥳❤️
@samlovesgaminggamergirl Is she wearing mostly pink and white, and looking so beautiful, while dancing like she’s known how since birth? Is that lovely one your daughter? 😊

@@karinbarger9192 Thank you for watching 😊
@samlovesgamming How old is your daughter? How long has she been dancing this dance?
I would absolutely love to see a pow wow ❤❤❤❤❤ So AMAZING
when it's celebrate ?

Snow on the ground already - and it’s still September
Hahahahaha!
Good work
Wopila William! We cannot wait to bring you more episodes.
How does one return a bison? Capture it in thw wild and truck it to a reservation?
🤔 It’s really a prehistoric mammal that could have died out with the Woolly Mammoth 🦣 , I simply call it the Woolly cow 🦬🥩
Bison 🦬
Beautiful sight 👋
Good to see u smile ..thank u 4 wat you do
The more I learn about Tanka Fund, the more I appreciate your comprehensive approach to bringing back the buffalo. Love it! Nurturing the next generation of buffalo caretakers AND expanding ways for people to participate in the buffalo economy - now that takes vision and execution. Great job! ❤❤❤
Leave it to humans to screw up God’s divine plan. Someday we’ll learn to leave well enough alone. I hope they make a huge comeback - if we’d just leave them alone! Thank you and bless you for your service! Last but not least - get back to school! I did it. I waited until I was 40. It worked out for the best. You already know what hard work is, keep the momentum going. Much Love! ♥️🦬🪶♥️
Божественно
Wow! ❤what a sight to see❤❤❤
I am glad for you...and your dream come true. Ajo.
Keep up the great work!
nice to hear a native speaking native
Yes they look just like the buffalo of long ago, especially the bright colored ear tags.
Thanks!
That's amazing! Wopila!
So wonderful to see so many indigenous women involved in returning buffalo to this land! We need it to restore the health of the Great Plains so that it can continue to sequester carbon and fight climate change. Great job, Tanka Fund! I’ll be donating today! 🎉
Thank you so much! And we appreciate you taking the time to watch!
Aren't these really Bison?
Bison and Buffalo are interchangeable. Among Native people, however, we typically call them Buffalo.
@@tankafund Not really, no buffalo in North America what caught me off guard was a video and channel dedicated to them, assumed Bison would be used.
@@tankafundBuffalo are an entirely different set of species. These are bison. Buffalo is a traditional error in nomenclature commonly used for bison in North America. I always thought that they were actually named buffalo until I learned the error in a high school class on North American history.
it is a shame that fencing needs to be part of this valuable effort...
It's impossible to caretake Buffalo without fencing. However these ranchers are on hundreds of acres of land and Buffalo are never truly penned in like cattle.
thanks for the reply! i understand and wish you and the project all the best!
@@LewisEGilbert We appreciate you, thank you!
Building back the sister nation is amazing to see.
Yes! Thank you for watching and for your comment!
That cool
I'm from Australia so I don't know a great deal about your culture other than the horrible stuff so it's awesome to see younger generations being involved in their culture and it sounds amazing. I find your music very relaxing and it brings a sense of peace.
I believe in the three B’s. Buffalo, bees, and beaver.

Well done Eric. I hope everyone watches this! So very heartfelt, I feel it. I’m so sorry this travesty is happening. The image of the red handprint over the mouth is very striking. Thank you for this share, as hard as it is. Bless you. ♥️
Well said, we agree, it's not easy to share but it is a story that must be told.
Thank you so very much for your kind words. Truly moved that the film resonated with you and our beloved @tankafund ...Blessings to you all.
Do they eat the buffalo, or do they admire them as regal beasts, question I have
Ecellent! Nice to see what we have been dancing and praying for, the mending of the hoop, Lecsi, Unci, and all of our community members continue, pray for least of all Tunkasila, wopela hecetu welo
So wonderful to see such commitment and dedication to restoring the buffalo/bison. This is critically important work to not just restore the livelihood of Native communities, but also restoring the grasslands and increasing biodiversity on the land. This is a much smarter way to address climate change that will benefit generations to come. ❤️🦬🙏
Awesome. Amazing. Breathtakingly Beautiful. Heartfelt Gratitude.
