Terrific performance. While one can disagree with some of Shafran's interpretations of the classics, when he was on, he was absolutely superb- and Shostakovich's compositions, including transcriptions for cello were clearly his bailiwick. Also from a cellistic technical standpoint you can learn a lot from these videos. I note that his fingerings were very creative- e.g., where he was not loathe to use his thumb and fifth finger liberally when the phrasing or speed of execution required it. Please keep posting these, and also of other famous Russian/Soviet musicians that people in the West had little chance to see and hear, including e.g. the Melodiya recordings. This is an important part of music history about which the public should know and be able to appreciate. Also, if you have access to recordings of early Tchaikovsky competitions, please post those. I am thinking specifically of a great performance of the Shostakovich sonata by Ko Iwasaki (who prepared that piece and others for the competition through coaching by Harvey Shapiro)

I love the way he uses his bow! Never seen anything like it! He is now on my list of favourite cellists. Shafran seems to be mysterious and underrated to me (Isserlis is hugely influenced by him though). Does anyone know why that is?

I like the musical humour embedded within Shostakovich's repertoire, this one with no exception. Salute to both composer & performer. Schafran cello work is top notch!

Aah Shafran... The greatest genius ever. Such a pity he left us now 20 years ago.

La participante Ayesha Gough es dueña de una gran técnica. Y eso justifica los aplausos. Pero, en mi humilde opinión, "afrancesó" a Liszt. Los dos primeros movimientos son más cercanos a Chopin. Liszt no es conocido por sus finos modales en el tratamiento (sigo los datos históricos). Soberbio, duro, exigente... Todo lo contrario a Chopin. Al piano lo interpretaba para demostrarle quién era el mejor de los dos. Sin embargo, la Srta. Gough, a partir de 15:50, hace un giro en su interpretación para culminarla como Sviatoslav Richter y nos termina entregando una dignísima interpretación. Humildemente sigo pensando que Liszt no es para damas. P.D.:En la R. Argentina el término afrancesado se utiliza de modo vulgar para aquello que es "refinado" y no por relacionarlo a F. Chopin

En primer lugar quiero destacar la sana humildad del Sr. Yau, Había acabado de interpretar un concierto complejo tal como es el Nº:1, op.1 de Sergei Rachmaninov y su mayor preocupación era saludar y felicitar al impecable conductor Alexander Carter. Dicho esto, la interpretación del participante es correctísima. Los tempi, los pianissimo, los "remates" son impecables. Encaró con no mucho romanticismo pero con buena técnica el 2º movimiento. Pero la segunda parte del tercer movimiento le sirve para redondear una destacada presentación. Conoce toda la técnica hasta en los gestos. Sin embargo, deberá con el paso de los años acercarse mas a la personalidad del autor sin amaneramientos igual que ahora pero tratando de comprender que pretendía expresar cada uno de ellos al crear su obra. No todo, pero sí un poco. Mi aplauso Sr- Yau.
