Fixing Cold Start Rattling of Honda CR-V: Replacing the VTC Spring
In this video, I tackled the cold start rattling issue in my 2014 Honda CR-V. I initially replaced the timing chain tensioner without success and then stretched the VTC spring, but it didn't help. Check out my previous video for more details. This time, I used the Spring-Start extreme kit to replace the spring, and miraculously, the rattling sound disappeared.

Troubleshooting of Cold Start Rattling Issue of Honda CRV 2014: Part 2. I found some oil leaks around the VTC solenoid and decided to replace the oil seal of the VTC. Also, I wanted to inspect my VTC solenoid for clogging assuming it may cause the cold start rattle. Hope this video will be useful to someone do the same repair.

Some people say that by stretching the spring of the VTC actuator, the famous Honda cold start rattling issue can be fixed. I tried to test this on my CRV 2014. It had a mileage of 125000 kilometers. I am giving my feedback below if this cheap fix can eliminate the issue. I know from the metallurgical point of view that stretching a spring may not be a good idea to improve its compression force...

It is better to check the starter cut relay before replacing the battery or starter motor!
It's a great fix. Would you please mind making another video explaining how you made these cables connect with the lockers for us mechanically challenged people? Thank you.
dude, you fucked up. you left a part out.
hello can you tell me the parameters of the new spring the thickness is 63mm the length and diameter are ???
The new spring is 0.63 mm, while the old one is 0.51 mm, making the new spring stiffer than the old one. It seems that the primary cause of the Honda rattling issue is a design flaw. The mechanism’s operation depends on both spring stiffness and the time required to build up oil pressure. Over time, as the car ages, the spring stiffness decreases, causing the VTC pin to release early before sufficient oil pressure has built up. This issue may also be worsened by the longer oil pressure build-up time in older cars. A slightly stiffer spring can resolve this, but if it’s too stiff, the VTC pin may not unlock at all, leading to a different error code.
@@mksckumara Hi Kumara! I would be very grateful if you could provide the measurements of the spring, specifically the length and thickness. The diameter of the coil is already clear. Thank you in advance!
Hi, thank you. This would be great and save a lot of money. Can you make another video but more in-depth for beginners, please.
Should battery be disconnected before pulling the relay module?

Hey Kumar! I have similar issue with 2015 CRV , just wondering if the problem came back after changing the spring ?
No, rattling issue gone, use Spring-Start extreme kit. Or you can try a spring with little bit higher tension. But don't increase it too much,
Do you live in Edmonton area by any chance. I did like to hear more information on this .
@AbdisahalHassan I live in Winnipeg. What are the questions you have?
What is the torque spec for screws on actuator ?

Same thing with mine! Replaced the battery yesterday thinking it was bad 🤦🏻♂️ now i gotta put a new starter before i get stranded somewhere jfc
Ive try everything and nothing
Yep, that's exactly what mine is doing...really confirms, thanks!
Seal yang Anda pasang terlihat kurang tebal seperti aslinya sedikit rawan ada kebocoran oli dan anehnya anda tidak memperlihat ukuran ketebalan Seal yang baru 😅
This can't be it. I pulled it and it still started. If that was the relay it wouldn't start at all
Started normally with the relay pulled? Looking at the wiring diagram that's not possible. Would be like removing a light switch, capping the wires and when you flip the breaker back on, the fixture lights up
How is the panel around the actuator removed?
Wrong spot for a 2014 CR-V. The starter motor is located in the back, under the exhaust manifold.
I don't know what car he's working on it that is not a 2014 Honda CRV!!!
It is 2014 CRV Ex, but I heard starter motor location different for some trim levels. Some got towards the back side (transmission)
Mine is same location
I am thinking the neutral lockout switch on the shifter lever. A minute ago I went to Walmart and on the way home it would not crank. Midiot light lit up but the start button did nothing but give a click over near the glove compartment. I finally put it in Neutral and it cranked. The button on the shifter did not want to work at first but I finally got it in Neutral. It is a 2016 Honda CRV EX. I put a brand new batter init yesterday and charged it up fully.
It could betransmission range swich. How did you verify that the starter be good?
@@mksckumara it works half the time. This problem is intermittent. Acts like a switch. I put the shift lever in N and if cranked. My wife of 52 years can break anything. She can only be trusted with an anvil, otherwise I have something else to fix😛
@@mksckumara when the electrical circuit is made it starts the car, normally. I do not know what is impeding the start circuit, but it is intermittent. Acts almost like a safety on a riding lawn mower, something is breaking the start circuit. On my CRV is the big audio screen. Tonight, when I tried to crank it, it would not. But as soon as the audio screen came on it would crank.
@@johnclarke6647 Based on the above description, it can be due to a connection issue of the battery wires, check the battery negative terminal grounding to the car body. check the key fob battery condition If the car is around 120000 km, the starter motor also can give similar intermittent starting symptoms. But in that case, you can hear a clicking sound from the bottom of the engine during failed attempts.
@@mksckumara I found the problem and have it fixed. When Honda replaced the battery in this car in 2020 the must have loosened the auxiliary ground wire which mounts to the side of the negative terminal. They had to replace the battery, again, in 2021 because it failed. I think T He bolt they loosened came out pretty soon after they replaced the first battery, so it did not charge, properly and they did not correct the issue when the replaced the battery. I caught the missing bolt when Walmart replace the battery the other day. I was going to put a new boot in it but the hole in the connector will not line up with the hole in the terminal. So, the ground connector was just laying on the ground terminal and would work sometimes and not work other times. This morning I put a big pair of hemostats on the connector and it has cranked every-time, since. I have an appointment at Honda and I am going to make them fix it. I would but would loose the codes for the radio, cd,etc. I am not putting those codes in,again. I think it was also effecting how the battery charged. It is a poor electrical design in my book.
How about the break pedal switch? I have no problem starting the car but I think wife stands on the break pedal. It also seems to be more of a problem when the battery is not 100% charged. It is not the starter. The electrical signal never gets that far.
Do you hear any clicking sound at the starter when the car is not starting? ua-cam.com/users/shortsNiCiQZa8Jcg?feature=share
@@mksckumara no, just a relay over by the glove compartment. I press down the break pedal and press the start button. Dead meat. Sometimes if I keep pressing the break pedal it will start. The break pedal does act a little funny.
@@johnclarke6647 like it’s hard unable to press down right ? It almost reminds me of the feeling after you pump the brake a couple times and it seizes up … That’s what I’m experiencing
Appreciate you!
