CROWN IMPERIAL/BIRDLAND/LET IT BE ME Drum Majors: Carrie Orcutt/Dave Lanford Ben Davis HS - Indianapolis,Indiana
Probably greatest instructor interview ever.
I was a ringer in BD during this time and no one invited me to get high. Being a part of that incredible hornline was enough high for me.
What a mess.
It's a champion show, but Homestead was just too good that year. I think BD could have done well at BOA GN that year had they gone. Too bad they didn't.
The trumpet line tearing throughout the closer is just unforgivable for a "championship" show. The marching technique of the performers ranges from meandering to mediocre. The band is (very) large, so gets the requisite +5 points for the amount of sound produced. Their 1995 show was lightyears ahead of this, both in design and execution (Homestead was flawless that year though), and probably would have done very well at BOA GN (top 5) had they gone. 1993 1. Northrop 2. Homestead 3. Ben Davis 4. Carmel 5. Center Grove
1979. Are the videos from '75, '76, & '77 available??
1993
My son was in that fabulous band that year! Gorgeous! He got a special award from Gary Wishmeyer. He had become a buddy to Wish at age five! Went on to be top drummer, head of drum line in 1994! Bill Robbins proud of you! Christa Barnhart was his girlfriend….my how time flies! They both went to I U together! Now both have other families but fun to remember those days!
I loved the soloist, but the band arrangement behind him felt more concert band and less jazz band. I guess that's what the music judges are looking for.
I was in this... so long ago
Omg I forgot the trumpet boy's name but he was amazing... Marched with him my freshman year and in a guys and dolls pit show.
Oh Guys and Dolls at Footlite? Yep yep
Was that gilmartin close up on flute?
Wayne was so much more fun then, when we were all getting high.
I remember marching this show. It was my first year as a Marching Giant and wow what a first year it was. There was definitely something special about this show. We went undefeated until state competition and got beat by a 10th of a point.
Humans can achieve amazing things, when they work together in harmony. This is a lesson for everyone of us.
I didn't march for BD but I do remember the shock and awe when this band marched onto the field. I remember that cadence that LC stole one year. I remember knowing that all hope was lost and BD would take the crown. I remember a time when this band and others would fill a field. Bands of today, not so much but I still feel joy when I see my wee un out there doing her thing...
Quadline as a Sophomore (frog) NOODLEBUG 96-97 It was an honor to march for Wish and the legendary Marching Giants! He was a great conductor and teacher, he actually knew who I was for the one year I marched for BD! Fellow band members know that's an honor for a Sophomore!
Got here from a Foo Fighters video of them performing Blackbird live in Mexico. BDHS always used to have one of the best, if not THE best band in the state. Would love to see all the band videos some day. Swamp Rats rule!
SWAMP RATS! THAT is a deep DEEEEEEP cut! LOL
Pretty large for a high school band, especially in the late 70's.
We were indeed
BTW....I didn't know Tim had uploaded this to UA-cam...unless someone else did it for him in the years after his passing. In either case, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Keith Dunn wow the good old times. Keith I miss you, I was a crow to your Scarecrow now I'm a crowette, I heard something about Froman passing 😔 if ever in Columbia Missouri look me up
HEY LADY!!!! I heard about your news. I'm so HAPPY FOR YOU! You weren't just a CROW! You were a friend and one of my favorite people! I kept telling Greg to have you get in touch....this was over 20 years ago....but I never did hear from you. UNTIL TODAY! YAY!!!!!! I'm in New Jersey. Been here 20 years. If you're on FB I'm Keith Dunn-Fernandez now. On Twitter I'm @keithpdunn HIT ME UP!!!
I haven't seen this since I was IN IT. Just beautiful!
Same

daaaang. back when we were actually good
nd where r my percussionists at in the comments?? lol
BD is still good. you don;t make state finals in class A by not being good.
@@valleayire1972 that comment aged poorly after 2018
Lel Lol yeah my mom watched BD instead of my competition, it was disappointing
You might be a lush if............ lol
RIP Gary Wishmeyer. A true hallmark in the marching arts field. You will be deeply missed. You as assistant director were instrumental in creating the best marching shows ever put on a football field.... State champion show or not. They are all legendary coming from a legendary man. I was privileged to meet you in person in 2009 at BOA Grand Nationals and sit and chat with you for a few hours of those golden era Ben Davis shows that truly sets the standard we all enjoy in marching band shows today. Rest eternally my friend... :(
I'm glad you had a good experience with him. I'm a BD grad from '82. Perhaps he'd mellowed by then.
Rest in peace Gary Wishmeyer for helping put together one of the legendary Ben Davis state championship shows. One of many. You will deeply missed.
I remember this show. I was in Avon's band, and I'm glad that we always stayed for Class A at invitationals. I always looked forward to seeing Ben Davis. I only wish I could find their 1994 show on UA-cam. I loved that one too, probably because it made a huge impression on me, a freshman who was completely new to marching band at that time, and I've hunted up and down for it but not found it. Their amazing trumpet soloist in this show had a solo in that show too.
Me too it was the best time of my life
I was a Marching Giant in the late 80's/Early 90's. The heyday of BD!
That was fun :)
I was reminded of this show after playing on my horn earlier today. I just wish I would have taken my hat off for the solo. Much thanks to whoever put this up, and it's good to see people from the band posting on here.
I remember this show....I was in Southport's band but I remember how amazing this show was...the soulfulness of it doesnt even really reflect in this video
We left it all out there, man. Every single one of us. You can see it on Scott's face, on Andy's face... everyone. That was the shit, man.
Woo! I marched in the BD band this year. Definitely an experience to remember!
Loved being first chair clarinet. Alot of hard work and dude sweat. It was well worth it
Was a Marching Giant that year. Played clarinet and was a senior. Was probably the most fun I've had in life even till this point. Loved it ; ahhh the memories
I was a marching giant this year. I played the clarinet and was a sophomore. What an awesome experience. Especially since we won :)
It's neat to see this again. That was an exciting time to be involved with marching band. Not only were all aspects of the shows different than today, but state was pretty much the 'end of the line' for those of us who marched. There was intensity and high emotions - and god, the nerves! It would be tough to make me forget any aspect of state day in 1995. It was a great time, and I am happy to say I marched that year. Thanks for watching, Scott (BD trumpet '93-'95 and soloist in this video)
ZiggyStud someday. I want to shake your hand.
I also marched that year and it is my favorite of all 3 years I was a marching Giant! 1995 was definitely a special year for us at BD (1995-97). My daughter also marched these last 4 years (2017-20) I feel there is an upward movement to bring BD back to being a threat again!
I marched in this show as well! That year was so fun!2
YEAH MAN. FINALLY I SEE IT!
This is my marching band piece this year
Pretty amazing! The music is complicated, the footwork is complicated, plus, having to play in gloves!!! WOW! Don Ellis would be proud!
now this is marching band
that first impact gets me every time i watch this....its so powerful this was an amazing show
wow! this is a gem! thanks for posting!
I was in the pit in 95 and I still get major chills hearing this show - especially the power of Strawberry Soup. What an amazing time!
In the pit?
Now known as front ensemble, back then, "the pit".
That was 2 COOL (WD). Thanks for uploading. Bwaahhahha
This was a great year! First year we got to toss our sabre's on the field....
I don't know why I find this so funny, but I do.... maybe it's the beer...
@JessOnTheRun He was just a drum major..
nice job good marching and manuvering. not slacking in the recruitment of excellent performers.. thats a huge band ,man !
