ESN Conversation: Diary of an Old Soul with Timothy Larsen
In 1880, the prolific author George MacDonald self-published a long poem in book form as a gift for his friends. He called it, in full, A Book of Strife in the Form of the Diary of an Old Soul. It contained a new seven-line stanza for each day of the calendar year, written as prayers expressing MacDonald's longings, struggles, and joys in everyday life.
The Diary was originally printed with a blank page facing every page of poetry so that readers could supplement MacDonald's diary with their own. This feature in particular, along with the spiritual wisdom and literary artistry of the text itself, was beloved by C. S. Lewis, who gave a copy of the book to his future wife, Joy Davidman, as a Christmas gift in 1952.
Wheaton historian Timothy Larsen has written an introduction and annotated a new edition of this work for InterVarsity Press that retains the blank pages. He will introduce us to George MacDonald, the Diary, and this new edition.

ESN Conversation: Awakening to Justice with A.G Miller & Douglas Strong
Переглядів 202 місяці тому

He identified it as the journal of a nineteenth-century Christian abolitionist and missionary, David Ingraham. As Momany and a fellow historian Doug Strong pored over the diary, they realized that studying this document could open new conversations for twen...
ESN Conversation: What Hath Darwin to Do with Scripture
Переглядів 2482 місяці тому
Believe it or not, the book of Genesis might have been the most Darwinian text in the ancient world. And throughout the opening books of Scripture, we find ideas that would also become prominent insights of the biologist Charles Darwin interlaced with the Bible's one-of-a-kind origin story. Biblical scholar Dru Johnson calls us beyond typical creation-versus-evolution debates to explore the con...

ESN Conversation: Wood Between the Worlds with Brian Zahnd
Переглядів 1295 місяців тому
Everything about the gospel message leads to the cross, and proceeds from the cross. But it would be a mistake to think we could sum up the significance of the crucifixion in a tidy sentence or two. Brian Zahnd reminds us that the meaning of the cross is multifaceted. Just as gazing through the eyepiece of a kaleidoscope reveals a new geometric image with every turn, Zahnd helps us see that the...

ESN Conversation: A Non-Anxious Life with with Alan Fadling

Anxiety leads us to succumb to fear and fight peace. Anxious living is a distortion of good motives, blocking the clarity of stillness and rest. Alan Fadling has also felt mastered by worry, but he brings counsel on how to learn a better way and who to look to for it: Jesus, "the ultimate non-anxious presence." He constructs a posture from which we can rest more deeply, live more fully, and lea...

In this short volume, priest and theologian Emily Hunter McGowin invites us into the church's celebration of that great exchange, in all its theological and liturgical splendor. Emily Hunter McGowin (PhD, University of Dayton) is associate pr...
ESN Conversation: Rethinking the Police with Daniel Reinhardt

In Rethinking the Police, Reinhardt lays out a history of policing in the United States, showing how it developed a culture of dehumanization, systemic racism, and brutality. But Reinhardt doesn't stop there: he offers a new model of policing based not in dominance and control but in a culture of servant leadership, with concrete suggestions for procedural justice and community policing. Daniel...

ESN Conversation: More Than Things with Paul Louis Metzger

We live in a culture of commodification. People are too often defined by what they do or own; they're treated as means to an end or cogs in a machine. In a world dominated by things, Paul Louis Metzger argues, we must work hard to account for one another's personhood.

what makes the Genesis story one of a kind? There are numerous similar myths from many cultures before and after.

Most (if not all) of its motifs and action are borrowed or inspired by earlier stories.

Darwin had nothing to do with scripture. In the mid nineteenth century the physical or elemental was extrapolated to be the nature of, not just physical reality, but all of reality. It was likely Darwin never intended for this to happen. In the cusp of a quantum age all of us, with the exception of hardcore materialists, know there is more to reality than the elements. There is consciousness, mind, various energies deriving from the three forces, electromagnetism and magnetism. What did Darwin know about any of this: zero. He was a biologist who studied and knew something about biology, and that was it. What does modern science know about any of this: zero. Advances have been made in understanding the gross physical and treating diseases, which is good, but that is all. In the East they focused more on internal reality and had a more expansive knowledge of consciousness and energy than was the case in the West. In the West the focus was on the external world. In the cusp of a quantum age and the new physics even materialists must see that reducing reality to what is elemental is no longer possible. If the elemental gave rise to consciousness that would be truly remarkable. That is why today philosophers are faced with ‘the hard problem of consciousness.’ It is doubtful they will ever resolve it, until they are ready to concede that it is fundamental.

Ephesians 3:2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: They reject the word dispensation entirely, even though it is found at least 4 times in the KJV along with many other allusions to the word dispensation. They are heaping to themselves teachers according to their own lusts. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Thank you! I learned a lot from this presentation. As an African-American Christian, Christian nationalism is not something that I know a lot about, and Paul Miller helped me to understand the mindset behind this movement. I do wish he had talked about his own journey that started in 2015/2016 away from Christain nationalism. That would've been very insightful to hear. Thanks again!

Which church / denomination specifically will be totally kosher? Or will it be to rank faith organizations according to ... some religious stated standard? No details in this idea ... intended to be blunt weapon, not practical but suits certain purposes ...not in the interest of We the People .. is my opinion.

Thank you for this, Bob. Amy's book and voice is crucial in addressing views that are ignorantly or intentionally harmful, especially in a Christian or church environment. If only people are open to learning, there is much to learn from those who have disabilities.
