Podcast Interview: Elder Holland Talks about 2021 “Musket Fire” Speech
Remember the musket fire talk Elder Holland gave at BYU? He hasn't really commented on it publicly. Until now.
.
He was interviewed by Sherri Dew on the church news podcast, where he spoke about what it's been like to lose his wife last year, and almost lose his own life, and what he thought about the reaction to his BYU address, and this is what he said.
.
Now I think it’s important to listen to the whole interview. I was really inspired by the hope he has for the future generation.

    I frequently lament the current state of our world, in which people seem to lack empathy, understanding, critical thinking skills, and context. It was horrendous, in my opinion, to even imply that Pres. Holland was advocating for violence in that speech. What was more concerning was how many church members didn't seem to understand what it was he was actually saying. I'm glad Pres. Holland was willing to add some clarity. Hopefully it'll help at least someone.

    Yes... cement was in Meso... but that is not where it came from. While it is true that buildings and structures in the Great Lakes and Heartland areas of present day United States were not built of rock or cement, it would probably surprise most people to learn that the ancient Egyptians used concrete in the construction of buildings, and the Romans had refined the art of concrete making down to a precise technology, and such construction is found throughout the Andean area of South America as well as Mesoamerica. Thus, cement cannot be used to prove Mesoamerica is the Land of Promise any more than it can be used to prove the Andean area is the Land of Promise. Because of both locations have it... it is most likely that when you throw in Hagoth into the picture where 4500 men, plus women, plus children left the area and sailed north. If Ecuador is considered as the land Northward... then you would expect to find cement there. And because they sailed north from that point... you would also find it in Meso America. But MesoAmerica is not the Book of Mormon lands... but Peru (Land Southward) Ecuador is the (Land Northward)

    The Bible teaches that God created us male and female (Genesis 1:27), and this binary nature is part of His divine order. While the world may struggle with issues of gender identity, as Christians, our guide should be the Word of God, which remains clear on this matter. At the same time, we are called to love and show compassion to all people, including those who are struggling with their identity. Jesus demonstrated this by loving sinners while never compromising on truth (John 8:11). We must hold to the unchanging truth of God’s Word while treating everyone with dignity and respect (Romans 13:8-10). From the perspective of the Torah, we see that God's laws provide a clear distinction between male and female roles and behaviors (Deuteronomy 22:5), reinforcing that these distinctions matter in God's order. While compassion is crucial, we must also be mindful not to confuse compassion with acceptance of practices that contradict God's design. As a former Mormon, I appreciate the desire for consistency and sensitivity in handling complex cases, but I believe that true consistency can only come from following God’s Word as revealed in the Bible. I encourage prayer and discernment, always seeking to align with biblical truths, even when societal trends or organizational policies shift. Ultimately, we need to love people without compromising on God’s truth.

      Polygamy is still in Mormon scripture, and while members of the predominant LDS faith don’t practice polygamy in life, men can still be “sealed” to multiple women if their prior spouses have passed, and they believe they will be married to them all in heaven. For example, the current prophet is sealed to two women.

      They believe they will collect spirit wives and children when they become God's of their own planets. Funny how clear the Bible is that there is only ONE God. None of us becomes like God or a God ourselves. PS. Not the lost tribe of Israel. DNA proves this. It also proves that they didn't come to the America's in ancient times. There are lots of things I admire about the Mormon church...but there are fundamental beliefs that I believe could condemn you to hell.

    Recently I've been looking at what appear to be chiasms in Helaman 4 (one of them centers on "the judgments of God did stare them in the face). A teacher pointed out one and I think I've found another, making two of them next to each other, but they're not as tidy as Alma 36. My hypothesis is that Mormon liked Alma's chiasms and started trying to write his own, but he wasn't as good at it. But this one being nice and short, he could do it better.

    My kids hang out with others from the ward, and it’s the kids from the most strident TBM, McConckie-an families who spout negativity about LGBTQ: “they’re wicked,” “they’re disgusting,” “we don’t want them here,” “it’s all in their head,” “take down that flag…” The Church is clearly trying to move into a space where it maintains a standard which it admits is not fully understood without spawning the hateful speculation that naturally arises in those knowledge gaps. I think more action is needed-you can’t create a dark, cool, moist environment and then use words to prevent mold from growing. The sad truth is that BYU is not a safe place for LGBTQ kids, and the current environment emboldens those who want it to remain that way. Last I heard BYU still didn’t allow the USGA to meet on campus like other clubs, and the Office of Inclusion is severely capped in its ability to message and promote inclusion. The logical conclusion to those official actions is that LGBTQ students are not wanted.

    • @MercurialMaven
      @MercurialMaven 2 дні тому

      I don't think there's an ounce of truth to anyting you said. In my 40 years in the church, I've heard zero people say anything like "they're disgusting". "take down that flag" is very appropriate, though, as the pride flag is a political and ideological symbol inextricably bound to secular atheism, leftism, and anti-Christianity in general, and has no place in any Christian church. BYU is a safe place for anyone who suffers from same-sex attraction, gender dysphoria, or any other weakness or stumbling block, because, as President Nelson preached, we value other identities higher, namely: child of God, child of the covenant, and disciple of Christ.

      What action would be enough? What action would be consistent with doctrine? Does it bother you that God’s plan of salvation, by virtue of people’s agency, will exclude people from living in His presence? Would you prefer Lucifer’s plan which is more equitable and inclusive to everyone? It is good to love everyone, but we shouldn’t try to be more righteous than God by claiming His teachings are “hateful” or “exclusionary”. Like many things in life, the nice-sounding language carries a meaning that is actually quite dark, and opposed to everything you believe. The prophet has called us to trust the doctrine of Christ more than the philosophies of men, and social justice is the latter, and quite literally is inspired by Lucifer. I guess that isn’t what your goal is. I commend you for your kindness and concern, but these are things to keep in mind. I’d recommend New Discourses if you want to learn more about it.

    • @JustinPratt1
      @JustinPratt1 День тому

      @@HawkeyeVoid how is what you say the doctrine of Christ? Christ himself never said anything at all about if homosexuality is a sin. Want to point where Christ himself addressed this supposed very important subject? Want to show where Christ told the eunuch that was baptized that they could not teach any lessons? Or they could not attend the temple?

    • @aBrewster29
      @aBrewster29 17 годин тому

      @@HawkeyeVoid well, that’s the crux of the issue, isn’t it? Are these anti-LGBTQ teachings truly of God, or are they the traditions of men, as we’ve seen at various points in history? I suppose someday we’ll all have perfect clarity on that and until that time we’ll just have to do our honest best with what we have. To your question about what would be enough, it’s a good question, and I don’t have the answer. But so far all BYU has done is tell these kids that they won’t be expelled merely for coming out. At a minimum I would recommend three things that do not contradict current policy/teachings whatsoever: 1) Allow an LGBTQ club to meet on campus. 2) Actively teach the student body not to bully or disparage marginalized individuals, and add this conduct requirement to the honor code. 3) Actively message to prospective students what a queer student’s life is generally like at BYU. Many queer kids choose BYU from an early belief that they can change or suppress their sexuality/orientation, and that BYU is just the environment needed for such an endeavor. A year or two in these students tend to hit a wall and fall into severe depression, with some even taking their lives. There is a dearth of success stories compared to the tragic ones, and these kids have a right to know before choosing a school.
