Welcome to Whistling Wind Island, an architectural gem nestled in the breathtaking landscape of Pointe au Baril, Canada. Designed by Akb Architects, this 3,130-square-foot project harmonizes seamlessly with its natural surroundings. Pointe au Baril is renowned for its dramatic freshwater landscapes, characterized by Precambrian rock archipelagoes and narrow waterways. This remote location, three hours north of Toronto, offers a pristine and challenging environment for both permanent and seasonal residents.
Whistling Wind Island, one of the furthest inhabited islands from the mainland, is exposed to the ever-changing elements. From calm, sunny mornings to unexpected afternoon hailstorms, the weather here is as dynamic as the scenery. The island's robust wind conditions make it a paradise for kite surfing, a passion of the owner.
The architecture of Whistling Wind Island features a cluster of pitch-roofed structures clad in silver-weathered cedar shingles. These buildings blend effortlessly with the surrounding brownish-grey rocks, creating a harmonious visual effect. The main cottage, situated at the highest elevation, is complemented by a bunkie, a sauna, and boat storage facilities. Wooden plank gangways connect these structures, weaving through the natural rock formations.
Unlike traditional summer homes, Whistling Wind Island offers panoramic views from wrap-around decks on all sides. Asymmetric shapes and steps blend with the natural topology, and triple-pane operable glass walls provide multiple entry points and excellent thermal control. Deeply recessed windows with overhangs shade the interiors, reducing solar heat gain while maintaining a connection to the outdoors.
Inside, the main cottage features an open kitchen, dining area, and a living room with a full-height fireplace made of local Muskoka granite. The use of custom-made cedar whitewashed boards and wood planks throughout the interiors creates a contemporary yet cozy atmosphere. This material palette extends to the bunkie, ensuring a warm, inviting environment in both buildings.
Whistling Wind Island is a testament to sustainable design. Built on the footprints of preexisting structures, it incorporates low-flow plumbing fixtures, tankless hot water systems, and woodburning fireplaces as the sole heat source. Respecting the natural beauty of the night sky, exterior lighting is minimal, with interior lighting designed to mimic the soft glow of candlelight.
As winter approaches, the island's buildings are protected with recessed aluminum doors and the removal of floating docks. This thoughtful design ensures that Whistling Wind Island remains a resilient and beautiful retreat, year after year.
