Short leg woman with built-up shoe
Short leg woman with built-up right shoe. it looked to have about 3" at the heel and 1" at the toe but, from her gait, it looks as if she needed an extra couple of inches

She has a congenital dislocation of the right hip. Because of this her right leg length changes when she bears weght with it or while swinging. If extra couple of inches are added to her right shoe, during swing her right leg would be longer than the left one therefore would be more uncomfortable for her. Mostly heel is adjusted according to the length of short leg when it is not weight bearing. For ordinary short legs without hip dislocation the lift compensates for the whole discrepancy that does not change when bearing weight.
