This book is well written but also incredibly tedious and infuriating. There are also unnecessary sex scenes and many uncomfortable rape scenes, not at all what I would expect of a classic, not that it is a classic, the plot is the undoing of it all.

    You can just about make a "sort of edible" gluten free pastry using egg and gf flour (if the filling far outweights the pastry), but it isn't possible to make a vegan cake. You need butter and eggs, and there are no non-chemical industry products that replace those.

    Another key to this book is the main protagonist recasting famous senseless deaths in a way that he can understand (jfk assassination as a motor race etc) and also his wife dying over and over again in various those celebrity deaths. So to me Ballard was literally trying to make sense of his wife’s out of the blue passing by restaging other deaths.

    • @GiuliaCampagnaro
      @GiuliaCampagnaro 2 місяці тому

      Exactly. Also the narration is carried out internally, describing the psychic reactions of the characters (who are always the same: only their names change according to the situations, as in experiments, in which their deaths and passions are simulated). Then there is the theme of the media (which he describes as "a map in search of a territory"). The media are the real exhibition of atrocities because on the same screen, a few minutes apart, they would show erotic or catastrophic events (wars, accidents, films, advertisements). Ballard describes the effects that this has on the human psyche from within.

    • @GiuliaCampagnaro
      @GiuliaCampagnaro 2 місяці тому

      to simplify the concept of "atrocity exhibition", sometimes in the book the protagonist is a professor who, together with his university students, stages an exhibition (mostly photographic) of events such as the murder of Kennedy, the suicide of Marilyn, the death of James Dean or the sexualization of jackie kennedy.

    Rutherford's point about 'a common ancestor' doesn't mean what you think it means. I have 2 parents, 4 grandparents, 8 great-grandparents etc etc. If we go back 25 generations, I have something like a million ancestors. I can't inherit DNA from all of them! Even my great-great-grandparents only passed 1/16th of their DNA on to me. You would also have about a million ancestors living at that time. There are only so many people in the world. I can't have a million ancestors all different from your ancestors, and different from everybody else's ancestors. There are bound to be many common ancestors. If we go back in time to when our first common ancestor appears, I might have , say, 10000 of my ancestors living at that time, and you would have about the same. One person would be in your list of ancestors and also appear in my list of ancestors. That would be our most recent common ancestor. But there would be absolutely nothing special about that person. He or she would just be one of my 10,000 ancestors living at that time, and also just one among the 10,000 of your ancestors living at that time. The chances are high you didn't inherit any DNA from that person and that I didn't inherit any DNA from that person. Not zero chance, but not high. I would inherit in total far more DNA from my other 9,999 ancestors than from that one single person, and in total you would inherit far more from your other 9,999 ancestors (which would all be different to mine as we only had 1 common ancestor at that time). We don't inherit the same DNA from our most common recent ancestor in some kind of weird privileged racial purity line of descent from that person. Genealogy is not genetics, no matter how much Rutherford obfuscates that fact.

    Adam Rutherford says in the book 'The genetic differences between us, small though they are, account for much, but not all, of the physical variation we can see or assess. The diaspora from Africa around 70,000 years ago and continual migration and mixing since, means that we can see that there is structure within the genomes that underlies our basic biology. Very broadly, that structure corresponds with land masses, but within those groups there is huge variation, and at the edges and within these groups, there is continuity of variation.' I am not a scientist and I find it hard to understand the science. I think some examples would help me. Can you name two of these land masses that correspond with the structures within the genomes? And can you name two of these 'groups'? Groups of what exactly? If I had names for two of these groups, I feel that would help me get a grasp on the science. Thanks in advance.

    • @maverickfegan
      @maverickfegan 9 місяців тому

      Hopefully somebody has an adequate answer to your question, I’m not sure that I do. But the groups are not as big as a continent, within Africa there are many clusters of genetic variability, with drift across boarders. Thinking about the uk as an example is very difficult, despite being an island there have been populations from the Romans, Saxons, Vikings that have mixed in. So you zoom out and look at Europe as a whole and then you get mixing at the edges, North Africa, Asia. I suppose the way to look at it is to think that certain areas have a predominance of a genotype which is very slightly different to that of a neighbouring area. Visual ques are easiest to recognise, such as the ginger haired people being most prevalent in parts with cloudier colder conditions, Ireland and Scotland have more ginger hair than England for example.

    • @stevencarr4002
      @stevencarr4002 9 місяців тому

      @@maverickfegan Of course there are huge variations within Africa. Nobody could mistake a Moroccan for a Bantu or an Igbo. And the amazing fact that 88 out of the top 100 marathon times are from people from Kenya and Ethiopia, while 79 of the last 80 finalists across the last ten Olympics have had at least one parent of primarily sub-Saharan ancestry, shows that Africans are hardly all identical to each other. 'I suppose the way to look at it is to think that certain areas have a predominance of a genotype which is very slightly different to that of a neighbouring area. ' Yes, the striking , immediately obvious ,difference between peoples on either side of the Himalayas is best explained by the Himalayas being such a huge barrier to travel.

      @maverickfegan 9 місяців тому

      @@stevencarr4002 Mathew Syed’s book Bounce was interesting, I think he was talking about genetic testing of athletes in Ethiopia and Kenya as well as other parts of Africa but they did not find anything significant genetically, but he thought it was the way of life, how school kids generally did a lot of walking/running on their way to school, this when combined with training facilities, and higher altitude being more important than genetics. The importance of building a community of winners who could mentor and inspire the future champs. He also mentioned West Africans and genes for fast twitch muscles, but again there are those who have the same gene but don’t have the same level of success. Genes can only take you so far I suppose.

    • @stevencarr4002
      @stevencarr4002 9 місяців тому

      @@maverickfegan Correct, genes can only take you so far. It would be idiotic to claim that every Ethiopian can run a marathon in 2 hours 10 minutes. Top American and European marathon runners do just as much training , as many miles per week, as Ethiopian and Kenyan runners. But you are correct that it is ultimately environmental factors that control everything. After all the only reason people in Northern Europe have white skin is because of the environment. The environment controls everything.

    Like those that came before you, you greatly underestimate the strength and capabilities of the German military going into WWII, failing to give them credit for strategies and tactics that would come to be adopted by the Allies in the coming years. Blitzkrieg, the "lightning" push westward is widely attributed to Carl von Clausewitz's Force concentration principle, not a "British manual"...and arguably made possible as a result of the humble "Jerry can" that fed the German military machine in it's westward advance. Outpacing it's supply line has been the downfall of many armies throughout history, the Jerry can effectively solved this issue for a mechanized force. That said, I appreciate the overview of Taylor's book and will definitely be acquiring a copy.

I'm quite certain that particular "negotiation and diplomacy" was settled in 1990 when NATO representatives agreed not to expand eastward, effectively establishing a buffer zone between Russia and Western Allies. War being as lucrative as it is, for an elite handful of people...we just gotta' Poke The Bear!
