    Why don’t you just buy a performance leaf spring kit with a 2 or 3 inch lift and tell them you want the spring rate softer. They can bend your springs in-house for a few hundred each.

    You go to 33s,you will loose a bunch of torque and probably kill your clutch. And decreased gas mileage. Now you get some lower gears like 4:88s or something that would work.

    • @hiddenwatersflyfishing
      @hiddenwatersflyfishing 9 місяців тому

      It has 4:30s in the axles and 4.7s in the transfer case. It should be ok, maybe not great on the road though lol

    Lets be real, 3k is steep for anything from the 80s. Unless they are in like excellent condition. Chances of that is pretty low. Not many people are willing to sell a good condition classic to begin with.

    That's very similar to the truck I had from 83-89. Yeah....I really regret getting rid of it, glad to hear you have more sense than I had. Anyway, it was a yellow 79 longbed with a Centerforce clutch, 50 state smog legal Weber carb, smog legal Doug Thorley tri-y header, 1/4" larger than stock diameter exhaust with a Thrush Turbo muffler, 3" suspension lift (Rugged Trail springs, Rancho RS5000 shocks), and 31x10.50 BFG All-Terrains on chrome versions of the same 8 spoke wheels on yours. It still had the stock axle ratio (4.37, same as 1980) and the stock 2.28 low range, but it had a 4 speed from an 82 which had lower 1st and 2nd gears than the 79-80 trans. It even had the same camper shell yours has when I bought it. Something that I did that improved the ride quality quite a bit was experiment with the tire pressures. I wound up settling on 29psi front and 24psi rear (without the shell), and not only was the ride quality noticeably improved, but so was the tire wear. At the recommended pressures they always wore down the center tread first, after lowering them to 29/24 they wore perfectly even across the tread and lasted at least 1 year longer. I would bump the rear up to 26psi if I put the shell on, up to 30-35psi for a very heavy load. Didn't hurt the gas mileage either. You may have already done this but in case you haven't and want to give it a shot, go to a smooth/flat parking lot and draw a chalk line across the tread, then drive in a straight line across the lot changing the pressure until the chalk wears off evenly.

      Yea, there are times that I've almost sold it. I'm glad I didn't haha. I put an L-52 from an 83 in it so it has a 5th gear for the highways. It's still running, I took it out this morning.

    Bravo on the 4:70 transfer case. That's what I Want. I have a 1983 pickup. Have 5:38 rear end gears. Rebuild my rear springs out of car leaf springs. Front has a 3 inch lift spring , way to rigid. Might take one out. Rebuild my motor. Used a 22R block mated to a 20 R head. Supposed to aid breathing. Long tube headers. Mikuni carb like your. Advice for you. Soften up the suspension. Kept at it. You are doing a good job

    I just bought mine and was really well preserved woth almost no rust, but it looked like some spots on the frame had rusted through so it might be a different story from the inside. Decided to strip it down and weld up all the rust, and restore the whole truck. Just gotta finish the garage before the snow arrives. Have to lay down some concrete and isolate it

    Just finished watching your video. I have an 82 myself. Unless your radiator/washer fluid reservoir is cracked, then you just need a new windshield washer pump. Just bought & installed a new one on mine from Part Geek. Very minimal wiring (used old connector. The nozzles themselves needed slight adjustment (just follow the washer line, unscrew the holding screws on each, then make slight bend adjustments as needed). Good luck.

      @@hiddenwatersflyfishing I'm a month late but, quite a few Toyotas used the same pump for the sprayer, my 82' has one I got out of a 86' Camry (Which is a story all it's own!) But if you're going to get bigger tires make sure to upgrade the brakes with the bigger master cylinder. I ran 33s off a friends chevy for a week while I was getting my wheels repaired and it stopped like a train, slowly.

    Ok were your front leaf springs bent back up? Mine are flexing the opposite way from a normal leaf spring and I am not sure what that’s all about. Also my rear end sags a good bit. Instead of being shaped like ) my leaves in the front are l shaped.

    • @hiddenwatersflyfishing

      Are yours stock? My stock ones in the front were under-arched. They sagged a lot and my rear were just low. I would guess that yours are just old. I'm sure you can get some new ones that are stock height, or at least an add-a-leaf.
