How a Roman settlement in Switzerland answered a contemporary environmental question
Переглядів 562 місяці тому
From the shores of sometimes-polluted Lake Champlain in Vermont, I take you to the village of Avenches, Switzerland, which is the site of the Roman-era town of Aventicum. Agricultural activity around Aventicum cause eutrophication in nearby Lake Murten, which is observed using lake sediment cores. Aventicum was sacked in the 200s AD, after which the region saw near-abandonment. This allowed int...
The future of winter in the northeastern US
Переглядів 8764 місяці тому
I explore how the winters of the northeastern United States might be changing, based on what I have seen in collected field data, longer-term climate records, and other regional changes. I focus on skiing, and am located in Stowe, Vermont, but these observations and thoughts extend beyond skiing to other winter activities, and beyond Stowe to include much of the northeastern US.
Watch the moon's shadow approach and pass during total solar eclipse
Переглядів 464 місяці тому
This video (speed = 4X) was taken on April 8, 2024 from Williston, Vermont, facing west across Lake Champlain and toward the Adirondack Mountains of New York. It shows the moon's shadow approaching, followed by totality which features a sunset effect in all directions. Our confused dogs run to check things out at the end, and I also tacked on a composite photo that I captured during the eclipse...
January 2024: You can feel the greenhouse effect
Переглядів 306 місяців тому
In this video, I am in the clouds on Mount Mansfield, Vermont visiting a snow sensing station. I discuss some aspects of the greenhouse effect and why cloudiness can affect the longwave radiation balance that plays the key role in the greenhouse effect and how clouds can play a key role in regional climate warming. I show how greenhouse warming keeps Earth habitable, but point out that you can ...
Mysterious, dreamlike landscape patterns in dry climates
Переглядів 3527 місяців тому
In this video I am out doing field work in Stowe, Vermont, but am discussing how amazing vegetation patterns can form depending on how much water the climate delivers. In Vermont, there is a lot of water (sometimes too much) and the vegetation is thick and uniform. In other parts of the world, however, there is much less water. In some special cases that leads to surreal patterns by which plant...
I bet you didn't know fog does this
Переглядів 547 місяців тому
This is a time lapse of river valley fog from September 30, 2022, in the Winooski River valley in Richmond, Vermont. The fog forms from air that has cooled near the land surface on those clear cold nights that allow heat loss from the land surface flowing into river valleys that are relatively warmer and more humid due to the river water retaining heat. When the vapor above the river is cooled ...
Trouble in paradise? Warm sea water and coral bleaching, and some trip highlights.

St John, US Virgin Islands. We have taken three trips there so far since January 2021, and it does not disappoint. Instead of making a standard travel video I decided to show highlights of one of the best things about the island the natural beauty both above and below water and discuss the concerns of coral bleaching as the waters continue to warm. This should serve as a short introduction and ...
Exploring a hidden gem of Vermont: the fossil reef of Isle La Motte
Переглядів 3 тис.Рік тому
There is a very interesting site in the Lake Champlain Islands: a fossilized reef from the Ordovician Period that dates back to 480 million years ago and is one of the very oldest fossil reefs in the world. At that time, there was hardly any terrestrial life but marine life was becoming more diverse. This fascinating site is hidden on Isle La Lotte, Vermont and is not well known but well worth ...

Agreed -- there are a few epic dumps each winter in the NE but you have to hit them quick as the snow is melted a few days later.

At 4:52 it shows Namibia circles with no vegetation in the circles but at 5:19 it shows Zambia with vegetation in the circles. What is the reason for this?

    • @JourneyToEarth
      @JourneyToEarth 7 місяців тому

That's a good question. The short answer is that I don't know, but I think there are very different reasons for different patterns in vegetation. I think the exact cause of the fairy circles in Namibia is still somewhat disputed. Some people think that the Namibia circles are due to termites, others have looked at fungi, but I think the most compelling explanation is that the rings are the result of self-organization of the grasses because of water limitation. Honestly, I don't know about the circles in Zambia, but I don't think their patterns are due to water limitation. It is probably something else.

Hi, thanks for the comment. Yes! Together with graduate students, we built them all ourselves with parts and sensors from a variety of sources. I'll show you another one next week that is near the highest point in Vermont.

It is called the Chazy Fossil Reef named after the town of Chazy on the New York side of the lake. There is a quarry in Chazy, Clinton County New York which is part of the reef too.

The examples that you showed represent a high level of biodiversity. To have that many fossils in such a small area is amazing; and in Vermont of all places. Thank you.
