The Classic Rotors Rotorcraft Museum Piasecki H-21B Shawnee 'Flying Banana' taxis after an air show. It does not sound like a 'typical helicopter' because it is powered by a 9 cylinder radial piston engine, not a turbine engine as most helicopters today. In 1957, when the H-21 was built, turbine engines were just beginning to be used in helicopters. The first turbine engine helicopter, the Kama...

Those “AirWomen” do a great job of pretending to be interested !
Nice video!
First flight in april 1952.
She came to south vietnam very early in 1960 for a beautiful time, then left i miss her very much H21, my two commemorative
In this video there is a small dot (dirt ) in the center of the lens bouncing around. A first sight I thought it was a dog running down the road, about to get run over... and I'm gettin' ready to unsubscribe. Ha. (Guess I shoulda' known better)
My heart ❤️ explodes of enthusiasm each time I see a piece of history like this one! My only regret is to be born too late damn....
Great video, I got a chance to fly in this very historic Helicopter. Thanks again for the experience :)
IM GONNA EAT THAT HELICOPTER!
This is so cool. One engine and 2 transmissions. Man I'd like to see one in person
Hey Guys? How about some NEW Videos? I'd Like to see Your Ka-26 Flying!!!
Thumba up if you were bored and searched "flying banana"
I told the owners they should paint it yellow.
Only coz I couldn't remember its proper name!
My dad also worked for Frank and was killed in Canada April 21, 1955 in a Canadian Air-force H21. I have visited the site recently with a cousin, the daughter of my dad's identical twin. Thanks for the efforts of aviation enthusiast and to Classic Rotors for keeping these pioneers of aviation and their hardware alive. I am now 65, I still love aviation and those who pioneered helicopters. These videos are very much appreciated.
In the early 60's as a young paratrooper we did military jumps from the H21. Took it a long time to reach 1200 ft with 12-troopers on board. Hooked the static line to a cable on the floor, had to be careful not to trip on it or the static line getting out the door. Skydived from it as well, found the rotors were made of wood when a broom stick baton we used to pass around was sucked up and through a blade while on the ground -- needless we lost the use of the H21 after that for skydiving.
Nice! I've flown in that helicopter..
I used to see thiis thing all the time im from out there and id see it at gilllespie or ramona airport.
the US makes the best helicopters and planes, and every thing!
It was stationed at Ramona Airport in the late 90's, early 2000's.
This chopper was stationed at Ramona Airport in southeast California.
My dad worked for Frank for many years then later for VRTOL. It's nice to see that there is an old 21 still flying.
Take off max gross weight is 15,200 lbs.
