How EPA Rules Are Changing HVAC Refrigerant Detection with Don C. Fort Sr.
👉 Get access to the FREE High-Performance Heat Pump Trial course here: bit.ly/highperformance-heatpumptrial
In this episode of @escogroup Esco HVAC Podcast, Clifton Beck sits down with Don C. Fort Sr. from @heatcraftworldwiderefriger5847 to indulge into the evolution of refrigeration technology and the impact of new refrigerant regulations on the HVAC industry. They discuss the challenges and opportunities brought on by changes in refrigerants, detection systems, and safety protocols. Don shares his insights on how contractors and technicians can adapt to these changes through training, proper tools, and a shift in mindset.
The conversation covers everything from the role of refrigerant detection systems (RDS) to the importance of understanding mildly flammable refrigerants like A2Ls. Don emphasizes the need for continuous learning as the industry moves toward natural refrigerants like CO2 and discusses strategies for ensuring safety and efficiency in both residential and commercial applications.
Key Takeaways:
Refrigerant Detection Systems (RDS) - New refrigerants require advanced detection systems to monitor leaks and ensure safety, particularly in larger commercial refrigeration units.
Adapting to A2L Refrigerants - Understanding the properties of mildly flammable refrigerants and using the right tools, such as compatible manifold gauges and evacuation pumps, is critical for safe handling.
The Importance of Training - Proper education and training are essential to help technicians navigate changes in refrigerant regulations and technology transitions.
Natural Refrigerants Are the Future - The industry is moving toward CO2 and other natural refrigerants, which require specialized equipment and knowledge of high-pressure systems.
Technology Transition in Refrigeration - Similar to the shift from manual to digital work orders, the move to electronic controls and advanced detection systems is reshaping how technicians operate in the field.
Balancing Cost & Compliance - Finding cost-effective solutions for small businesses, such as corner stores and bodegas, is key to ensuring compliance with new regulations without compromising profitability.

Furnace Safety Switches-Workbench Series
I have power to the ignitor on the smart valve, but when I plug in the ignitor the voltage drops to zero. This is happening on the old ignitor and a new one I got on amazon. Any idea how to test if it's the smart valve or the 24 volt transformer that is bad? Both of the ignitors are reading a little over 4 ohms cold. so I doubt they're both shorted out.
I found one today not good
I am in Houston so I never run into this issue, but the compressor maximum BTU doesn't change so if i need a 3 ton for cooling, but you need a 5 ton for heating because it gets below freezing outside. What are you supposed to do? Just put 5 ton invertors on everything?
Great information to learn more it’s not going be gas & go anymore all the cost is going to be pass down to the consumer.
Glad to hear the mom and pop shops are being considered . The price of everything cold is going up.
Thank You
So true, new install and leak from these aluminum coils
such a legend didn't realize you were the guy that's on my book till about the end of this video as a new tech going into the field this was very helpful as I feel you went a little more in depth in the video not only is this great your book is amazing thank you!

Most of my business is trouble shooting sick systems. And most are relatively new installations. I applaud ESCO and other training industries for their efforts in bringing in new technicians to the forefront of this era's technology but when company owners drive those same technicians into the ground by restricting them to limits on their time for new or replacement installations there is no room for intelligent training of minds that are starving for that wisdom and pride that comes from continuous training in the classroom and on the job. Pretty much all I see in the field of all forms of HVAC/R is the drive to install and/or replace on a restrictive time basis. The install and service technicians are given no chance to actually understand and enjoy their works of art as the emphasis, through most of the owners, is centered around the bottom line, getting the money and moving on. It's a shame but that is the way this new world seems to be.
Ironically these are made by Midea and not Bosch
Residential HVAC is gonna follow and copy the same demise and problems as Automotive started doing back in the early 1990s., As you reduce refrigerant charge like you stated crucially charged, and it will show up faster with customer discomfort., The other problem that will be happening this will happen more often on the same system. That means to compressor more often runs extremely low on refrigerant to oil return to the compressor.. and the compressor will be running more often through its lifetime at high super heat overheating. Automotive went through the same problem. Compressor start dying more often.. The other negative affect that residential commercial have already started to notice with the advent of microchannel condensers thinner, copper thinner aluminum is even more heat exchanger leaks. In our automotive industry, they went to the second date generation of ultra high, efficiency, micro channel design. With even smaller internal fins and tube diameters even thinner because thinner is cheaper.. thinner more energy transfer. And a lot more leaks. If residential and commercial heat exchangers migrate over to using the more ultra high efficiency, micro channel designs just like residential land commercial started to do using the 1990s technology automotive in residential and commercial. If you think you see a lot of of evaporator and condenser leaks now. Wait until you see the move to the new ultra high efficient, micro channel heat exchanger.. Not to even start to mention when compressor fails on a scroll due to lack of lubricant, and those very tiny metal particles go into the outdoor condenser directly from the compressor. The ultra small tube opening inside the refrigerant tubing of the micro channel gets partially restricted with the ultra small tiny metal particles that are ejected from the compressor.. And we’re gonna have technicians thinking they only need to change compressors when they have condensers that are partially restricted, and you cannot flush out the new generation of ultra high-efficiency micro channel. Welcome to the future of more problems and higher expenditures to the customers.
We'll be exploring these issues and solutions in future videos, so stay tuned!

Thanks for joining us!
Good and informative show . Thanks again.
You are very welcome, we’re glad you joined us.
As a former tech turned business owner, I absolutely just cringe at the thought of KPI’s. The thought of that is just grossly inhuman. When customers start getting looked at by techs like data points, those techs get fired. When a business does the same to their techs, it’s considered “savvy” and “maximizing efficiency”. It’s a soulless, lizard brain, money hungry, cancerous mindset that fuels explosive growth and penny pinching at the cost of humanity.
Do you guys have plans on coming out with a new update EPA 608 study guide? With all the changes that are coming. Thanks
The EPA608 was a directive out of the Clean Air Act to require training in the safe handling of ozone depleting refrigerants and their replacements. The safe handling of flammable refrigerants is a directive out of the American Innovation and Manufacturing act which is a separate piece of legislation. The expectation is that the epa may require training and certification under the AIM act that would be separate from the 608. We are still awaiting a final rule by the EPA.
@@escogroupThanks for the explanation. 👍
What do the letters ESCO stand for?
Everyone who owns a property should have an accurate heat loss calculation done. Even if it costs $1K to complete accurately, it will save $$$ in the long run,
Yeap. Manifolds are abused.
Sounds like a BMW, only when things are maintained and kept to a T, there will be issues.
The EPA is creating the DISASTER!!! Get rid of the EPA!!!
👎🏼
One thing to always do, particularly with new construction: get a high efficiency heat pump quoted, but also a traditional A/C system without heat pump quoted. Now take those thousands of dollars saved and see how much more insulation you can afford. The insulation works for you all year for free, the heat pump only gives an advantage within its optimal temperature range. So far insulation has always won out for my jobs in the Alabama climate. Job were on now with 2x 3 ton units, the quote difference between traditional and 18SEER heat pump was $15,000
Why is the valve destroyed by taking off the cover? I have a loose connection causing intermittent ignitor operation that I'd like to try and fix.
When measuring the total external static pressure on my goodman furnace should the furnace be operating normally as in heat on or should just the blower running with no heat?
Manual J is probably more important now than it has ever been.
Brown or Orange 🍊
Do u remember
This was a great video, definitely helps to understand a little better. Does the communication signal usually originate from the outdoor or indoor unit?
I am tired of all theb.s. regulationd after 47 years in the business. I am retiring. Get rid of the epa and clean air act.
We don't need no clean air...
Thank you very much. Excellent information. Question. I heard that in Europe there is a plan to ban R1234yf because it contains PFAS and R454B which contains R1234yf. Is this true? At 48:17 Jason mentions that in the 90's it was the ODP and today it is the GWP, can we imagine that something new will come in about 10 years with the new refrigerants? Like if they contain PFAS for example. Or will there be a new trend to move to systems that do not use refrigerant gases?
What what Europe does we often follow, We will have to wait to see what happens here. As we receive notice of proposed rules or final rules, we will share them.
Hello, watching from Nigeria 🇳🇬. I'm so very much interested in becoming an HVAC technician, I was searching for a program that would help my skills, that's when I found your channel. I love the interaction so very much, but it's all a bit too big for me as a beginner. Would love to learn more, as a beginner. Thanks
Leak Records being the end user responsibility simply stated is that if there are zero leaks, then the GWP is meaningless. I continue to see filthy motor rooms that show us one thing. The Budget is not there to properly address their Systems. The first thing to not be considered in the budget is the Refrigeration Manintenance Processes. They may change the oil in their Family car, but "maybe get some more time" with the heart of their Grocery store refrigeration metrics. We have supplied quite a few R290 and 448A Fixtures to many end users just like Tops, and continue to embrace how all of us can be ready for the future. Going forward, everyone needs to get a grip on what is happening and all aboard! Ideas are welcome!
It's already too late to think POTUS (who signed the AIM act) will change anything becuase the Economy says as much. No one will get back to the older systems becuase they have ALL invested in the new equipment production and sourcing metrics that span a multiple of years into the future to be able to produce. To put out there that Congress can recind these rules is folly IMO.
Commercial Refrigeration is where we have been, myself involved in the field since 1975 and my USN "Apprenticeship". The comments some have put out has driven a converstaion of how "everyone has an opinion, regardless of how informed they may be" either from their experience or from the Conspiracy Side of Politics and their myriad social media resources. ESCO Group serves a purpose to the Educators/Contractors of our Thermodynamic Trades. They are an Information and Training conduit. They do not make Policy. They are not compromised (by our Government) to curtail or design their information. They are not controlling information like it seems we have seen more and more with this social media craze. I find that they are informed and cabable to give a non-biased resource to improve the process. Fake News is getting a lot of us to be bold with sundry non-informed comments which by the way seem to be "liked" by a few common brethren in arms. For those whom think that since our POTUS has "saved 3 Trillion" by removing itself from the Paris Accords, the wheels here are non-reversible. The Manufacturing entities have already disbanded their production and converted to the new. Get a grip folks, this is not going to change. One must take the time to educate themselves like Keilly states in tjis podcast.
We got a new heat pump and water heater September 2024 by a professional that was recommended by the electric company. We are still waiting on the electric company to send us our rebate. Do we take our receipts for these to the accountant? Taxes are things I don't understand and it seems some things we take to the accountant don't qualify or get inputted.
Yes there is a federal tax credit for qualified heat pumps as well as heat pump water heaters. Definitely take your receipts to your accountant. www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/energy-efficient-home-improvement-credit
Thanks for this great overview!
Stupid they chaining year making money all politicians are not for people also this is bush it EPA you know how much cost why not they do once for one time your news media not for people
R-22 days I used count the evap coils a year I’d do on one hand. Now it’s 5 a month. They last 2-5 years. Back than , used to be 10-15 years for a coil. Something ls gotta be done. This isn’t right
This is the premier show to stay current in technology, incentive programs, and education trends in general.
I am a home owner and want to install a high efficiency heat pump on my house, do I get a rebate or it is only designed to benefit contractors and rich people not to pay their taxes?
Now Now, lets keep this conversation on the positive side please and listen to the entire episode before making statements or judgements.. This is designed for YOU the homeowner to acquire rebates directly from your state energy office. This video clearly explains to check with your state energy office to see where they are in funds dispersal and applications. There is even links in the description to the program page as well as the state update map. The programs are specifically designed for those in the lower 80% of area median income.-Clifton
What great information! HVACR educators, trainers, and contractors, going green is about enhancing energy efficiency. However, it is also about increasing profits by installing, servicing, and maintaining high-efficiency equipment. If you’re aware of all of the incentives, this is a great summary.
Nice overview! A casual observation on my part personally is that questions asked and answered lead to the "income levels" being set as a part on qualifying for the incentives is believed to be unfair, and those whom may benefit (and possibly best be able to afford?) all the envelope and utilty upgrade programs available simply say no because they believe that the electrification programs and those front end costs do not add enough value to their real property in addition to if the USA is serious about curbing the energy being used than why is there an income standard? I concur in some respect to their believeing it is not right. Consequently they simply carry on..... A Home Energy Audit being required is also part of the game here, and as Clifton stated can be a way to become involved and assist the energy issues we have been moving toward addressing for many years now.,
Thanks for joining us Joe! It’s a challenge to help people understand the long term investment in energy upgrades. I think about all of the homes that could benefit and the energy that can be saved, and unfortunately many people are unaware of the funds available to them. Hopefully this new investment in energy upgrades will benefit those most vulnerable and affected by the increased cost of living and an escalating cost for energy. Clifton
Doing great things Clifton👍@@escogroup
19:55 I can't understand it. Why MBh? What does the h stand for? Why not use k for kilos? hehe anyway, great talk. I didn't know about this manual. I've seen more training with manual J. Thanks
Does the supermarket company need to report or the hvac tech / bussines
For a number of years now work has been proceeding in order to bring perfection to the crudely conceived idea of a transmission that would not only supply inverse reactive current for use in unilateral phase detractors but would also be capable of automatically synchronising cardinal grameters such an instrument is the turbo encabulator.
Are new HVAC refrigerants $100/lb?
$16-$20 average
I turned in a high profile company for holding mixed refrigerants in one container. how soon would I hear about the violation and maybe a reward?
Thank you so much for this video, we received an estimate from our HVAC provider yesterday for a new unit. Extremely helpful!
A few HVAC companies here in CA. only sale electric heat pumps. I almost bought one until I found out that I needed an electrical upgrade and a HP would drive up my monthly electric bill. Now, if I had Solar, it might be worth it. I ended up going back to gas furnace with the new R32 on the cooling side
