JVC GR-80S : Editing in camcorder exemple
Here is a "slideshow" all done with the camcroder itself like if it was in 90's in few steps :
1 : Recording the audio track thanks to the audio line input.
2 : Inserting video and trying to get some synchro with music
3 : Share with the world... (Well, not really like in 90's :D)
Video insertion of course kill Hi-Fi, only mono linear track can be used for music.
The end is a bit brutal, i didn't really plan anything.
But i was just wondering how cool this capability could have been back in the days :)

the FX700E/FX710 is the only Hi8 camcorder in Sony's CCD-FX series of handycam camcorders to ever be manufactured. Not the only Stereo unit mind you but the rest of the CCD-FX units are all plain 8mm

@@Whakamescope same for American eBay. in 2022 I remember purchasing 3 units, one of who I gave to a VHS friend of mine. One works perfectly (records audio and video perfectly and plays back) surprisingly so, and the other one I have still needs the audio board recapped because it emits a strange buzzing noise for anything it records.

Another nice old home movie from you! I was inspired by what you're doing, so just bought a Sony CCD TR805E with eight tapes. Happily, the camcorder still appears to work, despite being from the bad caps era. I think this model only contains a few aluminium capacitors, so hopefully they won't cause a problem! Interestingly, the tapes are very high grade (Sony Hi8 Master, Fuji ME Position, etc) and meticulously labelled. I look forward to receiving it a few days. Now I just need a way to digitise the tapes! Keep up the good work! :D

glad you found something that looks promising. i don't know this paricular model but my advice is if you can find someone who can replace capacitors, it'll worth it specially if it's still working correctly now. if you plan to keep it on a long term, i think it might be a good idea. and even if you plan to sell at some point, a restored unit is a great argument :)

@@Whakamescope Yes, that's a very good bit of advice. I should have it in a few days, and if the cosmetic condition is good with no significant capacitor problems, I'll see if I can find a technician near me. If the capacitors haven't gone bad yet, they surely will!

This video is the ultimate example of 'the format doesn't matter' in my opinion. Although I couldn't understand the words spoken, I can totally relate to the lovely memories the family created on this holiday! It makes me wish my family had a camcorder in the 1990s.

I'd love an old Sony Hi8 camcorders, but the bad capacitors have scared me away from the V800E, TR2000E or FX700E. Do you know if the VX1E also suffers from leaky capacitors? Thank you very much! I really like your channel. :)

@@matthewbuick373 this one was still working, and believe it or not, with all smd aluminum capacitors going bad. by going bad, i mean they all showed high esr, or close to not react at testing. i don't remember if some of them showed leakage evidence, i would say yes, but nothing dramatical. i replaced them of course, but really, was still working fine. but this one is one of the latest produced. i buyed another one, an early one, and this wasn't the same story at all. i got it back, but it still have a defective audio channel and record audio in mono, but still capable of stereo playback. and it also got issue with manual focus, and this was due to leakage of the big thru hole capacitor in the camera section, had corroded several components joints, so cleaning and resoldering fixed this issue. but for the bad audio channel... for the moment, i didn't get the cause.

@@Whakamescope Interesting! I'm glad to hear you repaired these cameras as best as possible and gave them a new life. It's a shame that even Sony's pro line camcorder suffers from these faulty capacitors. I have no electronics repair experience, so I will stick to the later Sony camcorders which don't seem to suffer from this issue to the same degree. I'm currently searching for the very rare Sony CCD TRV300E (1998) which has full manual exposure controls like the VX1E but also an LCD screen. Most unusual! Best of luck with this channel, it's very fun to watch, and I love what it stands for! :)

@@matthewbuick373 thanks :) the VX1 is still consumer grade anyway, but at the time nobody could know how capacitors would age... now we know, for sure. but i really won't be surprise if the real pro range (UVW/EVW family) also suffer from that. smd aluminium capacitors is a crappy design. even in more modern hardware they don't age particulary well.

i love what's good in both format, but i admit i tend to prefer SVHS over Hi8. but not only JVC, i also have some panasonic. i wanted the VX1 because it's a very unique piece of history as it's the very first consumer grade 3 CCD camcorder. i also have a V800 which mostly work (it can record without issues, but have playback issue), and a totally wasted V600. maybe i'll pick some others models in future, as the FX700 for exemple :)

Are you saying it doesn't work post-repair? I'd also recommend a TR705 maybe even a TR805. Now that I think about it, TR705 is mid-tier compared to the TR75 and TR805. In America the TR805 is called TR101 and called TR900 over in Japan who made a special edition of the model with a color viewfinder called TR1000 which I plan on buying soon if able

@@CycloneCordVHS i don't think i'm gonna go with TR series. the FX700 would be an exception as i really love the way it look. something like dolphin/submarine look with its roundy shape, i really enjoy looking at it. but if i continue to grow sony collection, i'll probabely go for a V5/6000 or something in this kind. for the V600 yes, it was my first buy, and capacitors are not always the solution to all. this one had serious servo issues. maybe it's a consequence of capacitors, but i didn't see any obvious corrosive attack, but sometimes corrosion can occur in inner layers while all look right at the surface... so i gived up on this one, i desoldered all capacitors i had replaced and keep it for spare. and it helped bringing the V800 to life by giving its power board and camera DC-DC converter. i also forgot to say the V800 also have some servo issue, when cold it always think there's a tape inside... the mode switch is not the culprit, and i checked all traces/resistors between the boards who hold all the sensors/switch to the servo IC, and all check ok... so i really begin to think the IC is somewhat flaky. the same for the playback issue, the DOC doesn't work correctly and picture is totally trashed in pause. like when a video head is broken. everything in the DOC circuitry check good, only the video IC remain...

About time someone did a video on the GR-S90S. I found this one on eBay once before but I didn't get it bc I foolishly assumed the offer would stay up there for 2 more years. The GR-S90S or (S90 for short) has stereo sound. I wonder if its onboard audio sounds identical to that of the GR-S505.

    • @Whakamescope
      @Whakamescope 3 місяці тому

if you plan to buy one, be careful as the 90S was very specific for french market. the last S stand for secam, not stereo. meaning vhs record colour in secam standard. svhs is of course pal, but it has a built in switchable pal > secam transcoder. and of course, beware of capacitors... those can be very very tricky to restore due to a hybrid IC that has 6 capacitors on it and it's not easy to work on. if you've any info about a "S90" i'd be very curious :) i plan to do some outdoor footage once i get a battery, and i'll make some comparison with the original microphone and another jvc stereo mic, the M-212 from early 80's.
