Catching a swarm at home on Kauai
They came back! Well, a swarm has re-occupied the hive that absconded when I added a queen extruder at the wrong time. Lovely to watch. When swarming they are not concerned about stinging you.

Largo Banana on Kauai

First Largo that I have grown here in Waiole. Grew these in Wainiha for years. Very BBTV resistant. Good green ripe for potato. Very similar to Ice Cream banana (Bluggo) when full ripe. Short banana fruiting at 7-8 feet.

Mystery Maoli banana on Kauai
Переглядів 473Місяць тому
Can't remember where this banana came from. There was a point there where we were hiking to a lot of remote places and finding struggling native bananas. We would cut back invasive plants and replant within the same area with what keikis the plant had. Taking home one or two fist sized keikis to plant with us. It takes so long for them to mature from that stage that I have simply forgotten thei...

Here are some helpful examples of Fei'ii that I have the honor to be growing here on the N shore of Kauai. The stock is from here also. They can contain seeds sometimes. Very susceptible to BBTV.

Unknown Maoli Banana, Kauai Hawaii

First time ever grown in civilization, this unusual banana has repeatedly behaved like this example. Closest description of a thought to be extinct maoli banana is the "PUHI" or "eel like". The bananas were said to curl around them selves when they are young. Maybe "into" then selves is more like it?

That bunch was huuuge!
Just wanted to tell u that it's absolutely fascinating what are u posting! I'm astounded to see how much food these plants can produce!! These varities shouldn't go extinct!! Please preserve these banana varities!!
Thank you so much for the good vibes! Every day my mind is blown away by nature. Our presence in nature, in the Now, is time salvaged from the abyss. Good food equals good vibes! Please have a pleasant meal with some good people in a beautiful place! Aloha!
Report back on the taste of the behemoth banana
Hey brother, is this an edible variety? (Not seeded) Reason I'm asking, I've seen seeds for fei sold online, but looking for seedless fei.
nope, no seed. this is Fei'i Afara, very easy to eat but very different. Susceptible to Bunchy Top Virus! Can sell through our etsy page if you would like; "Our beautiful Kauai". Just let me know and I will list it. This month I am on Hawaiian time so it will take me a moment to get back to you. Aloha!
Amazing. It's pretty big banana 🍌 😍
You should visit Papua New Guinea or West Papua. There are hundreds of unique banana cultivars.
Someday my friend!
You guys are amazing! Love that you are loving life together. Laughed out load on your "make a porn star blush"!! Stay safe xo.
Beautiful harvest. Good thing you have lots of soil there.
i tried 2 email u but it said email not found
kan u send seedz 2 texas i kollect rare plantz ur place lookz great
We could work something out. As you can see, I have access to some rare varieties of plants. We love to see seeds finding a home. Seeds are, of course, seasonal and plants come through our group on occasion that that do well/best from cuttings. Drop me an email to correspond further. i don't use a smart phone! Aloha.
Hi. I just found your channel and have been watching your videos. Absolutely love them. Where is it that you're located?
I mean what part of the island
@@Tefoe North Shore, Hanalei area. Glad to see you are a banana lover also. Aloha!
My brother lives over there somewhere same island. I've never been to any of the Islands and without using Google i heave zero knowledge of any of the geography over there. I am a huge banana lover. We're attempting to collect as many varieties as possible and open a banana botanical gardens over here in Florida.

Ohhh!!! Never trust Hawaiian rocks. Good to know!!
Kokee has amazing filming talent and botany knowledge!
Thanks, Aloha!
How cool, I'll have to try that with the bananas in my backyard!
Not all bananas produce pilali, just so you know. Always check new varieties! Aloha!
Any chance on ever getting this on the mainland?
Maybe, but don't trust the names from nurseries! Maolis can be sourced from Florida, and Tongan bananas can be very close in quality also. I could sell pups but it would be pricey and they stand a chance of falling to local banana diseases. Aloha!
@@gorillapermacuture thanks for the reply. I am also looking for Kava Kava Awa plants. We are about to put up tall hightunnels for banana production. The heating cost will be minimal. I see it as part of the future of Agriculture here in the South East. Mahalo
Squirrely monstas!
epic rescue! learned so much about the pup and corm prep.
Thank you and Aloha!
Really enjoyed your recovery mission, that's what i love also, do hope you can do another one like it, just subscribed, cheers Wayne, Chillagoe Nth Qld Australia.
Thanks brother!
Mahalo ✌
ROOTS!
Congratulations. At first I thought your place is an Asian place. It's surprising to me to see your place as an Asian garden around your house. Yours is better than mine here in Seattle. Hat's off to you! Keep up the great work.
Aloha my friend and thank you. I grew up in Seattle. Ballard 92. We had a cabin on highway 2 near Index. Clam digging, wading for crab, bird hunting in E. Wa, P.S.M.S. etc. Got my roots in N.W. ethnobotany.
What do you think causes it?
The West side of Kauai has seen a lot of GMO and associated chemicals so I would not rule out the chance that those chems may have advance the likelihood of beak deformities. I believe the these were both related to what happened in the first few hours after hatching. If addressed, they might have looked somewhat normal in adulthood.
Nice rack! Nice take down 👏
Are bananas even from Hawaii?
Nope, canoe plants brought at different times throughout the migration. Over hundreds of years of close cultivation many new varieties developed and were grown out. Bananas can produce new mutations somewhat often. There are a number of varieties of Ele Ele in the Hawaiian islands and other types of bananas in the world that develop black or red to their trunks. I know of three different Ele Ele in my area and a black trunk Balbisiana down the road. There is some suspect that banana seed might have made it to Hawaii in birds. Aloha!
@@gorillapermacuture aroha 🤙
Touch and go on bringing down that rack.. great job! Great shirt!
Thanks!!
Should try pigeon peas for the summer.
Got plenty up with the vanillas but they aren't producing seed well due to lack of full sun. They really like full exposure. The green ripe make good edamame.
@@gorillapermacuture nice. I have about 30 trees flowering and producing about 10ft tall
at market saturday? needing some plants..
Does he sell plants? Where?
Are you on Kauai? I can ship rare seed and banana pups. Bananas are a little pricey because of the work packaging and fastest shipping, plus rarity.
@@gorillapermacuture I know you, we have met. We even live close to each other... I'd love to come to you for banana, etc.
@@Violet_Lotus_ Try and swing by Hanalei farmers market on any Saturday. I have the only N.shore produce booth. We can go from there. I have a lot of cool rare plant that need homes. Aloha!
@@gorillapermacuture ok! I'll see you next Sat!!
just discovered your channel. Happy Valentine's day. (P.S. I know you!)
Well aloha and thanks! I started the channel for our mainland family but I am also featuring rare plants and their uses. You can also visit the Food Forest in Kilauea to learn more about plants and meet great people, get starts etc.
Great video
I have never seen this banana variety. You had abundant harvest❤❤
These short bananas don't fall in the wind as easy either. I will be growing a native Hawaiian variety of plantain (Mai'a Maoli Kaualau) that is the same hight and produces's even bigger racks! Aloha!
what are you feeding those ginormous nanas? please enlighten. mosquito suit?
Bananas love new soil and dead stuff. Throw a chicken or fish or whatevea in the bottom and pow! Keep feeding with urine, rats I trap, the dogs crap, ya get the drift. The suit, well, I run better in cold weather in fact, and the mosquitos can be bad. Aloha!
🤙
Beautiful!!!!!
Thanks Mark! Aloha brother!
Cuáles son los beneficios de comer BACAO ??
I am guessing that you are asking the benefits of eating Cacao. Anti oxidants, fats, protein, cafffine etc. Sure you can look it up. Bi-color was used in the Aztec chocolate drink. Aloha!
It’s a shame about the beeping machinery in the background. Made the video almost unwatchable 😣
My neighbors are always at it, and if it's not machinery, it's dog barking. ats Hawaii for ya! Aloha!
What’s the flavor like? Don’t say banana
Iholena have a salmon colored flesh with high beta- carotene. I would say it is closer in umami to apple. Cooked is very different, like plantain but a little wet. This kind here is great out of hand unlike most plantains. Very easy to eat, even mainlanders like them. Aloha!
Looks like you have a lot of soil on Kauai.
Every place is different. Pineapple and sugarcane wasted lots of soil on Kauai. Even in my yard there is a patch of rotten rock that won't grow much. The heavy rains move the dirt. I also dropped an 80 ft canopy, chipping and stacking the whole thing. Lots of Hugelkultur here!
What kind of banana is that?
Mia Iholena but I don't have a name. Banana names are shotty at best. Every neighborhood has a different name for a banana and the botanists don't care much about food plants.
Great videos. Where is this at? We are currently working on our land in Mountain View area.
I'm on Kauai N. Shore Hanalei. I do have a lot in Hawaiian Beaches but it is vacant.
Good info here. Thnx for this vid. Trying to learn as much as I can. Peace N Love
Those are the tastiest peppers@
Is this the same iholena that has burgundy/maroonish colors under leaves sometimes? What a beautiful rac off that iholena. Hopefully I have this variety. I'd love a rac similar to this. Peace N Love
Aloha, it's unusual for iholena to not have the coppery under leaf. I have seen one variety that only shows the color on the cigar leaf, then it fades. Acuminata have a copper under leaf but the fruit is full of seeds. Also seen some south east asian varieties with a blush.
Hello done watching, please resback thank you for sharing
Very interesting. I see what you mean about the angle of bananas. I have a banana that looks like iholena but not sure. Hasn't fruits yet. I'll stay tuned in to ya Peace N Love
Be safe hawaii is bad
Lucky I live Kauai, dis lot is for the future. If an old friend wasn't the neighbor then I wouldn't have bought cause of the squatter potential.
Nice! thanks for sharing 😘
Beautiful video! Great job. Have a wonderful day. Much Love and Aloha
All that for what?
Well, if you don't keep control of the forest then the job becomes a lot harder and potentially more expensive. I have the fortune that the lot had been cleared 15 years prior. That lot could have costed thousands to clear otherwise. I know, for it has cost me around $15000 to have just half of the old growth trees cut at my Kauai lot and my wife and I did most of the ground crew work ourselves. Got a video on that. Life is about maintenance, Aloha
