Catching a swarm at home on Kauai
They came back! Well, a swarm has re-occupied the hive that absconded when I added a queen extruder at the wrong time. Lovely to watch. When swarming they are not concerned about stinging you.

First Largo that I have grown here in Waiole. Grew these in Wainiha for years. Very BBTV resistant. Good green ripe for potato. Very similar to Ice Cream banana (Bluggo) when full ripe. Short banana fruiting at 7-8 feet.

Mystery Maoli banana on Kauai
Переглядів 473Місяць тому
Can't remember where this banana came from. There was a point there where we were hiking to a lot of remote places and finding struggling native bananas. We would cut back invasive plants and replant within the same area with what keikis the plant had. Taking home one or two fist sized keikis to plant with us. It takes so long for them to mature from that stage that I have simply forgotten thei...

First time ever grown in civilization, this unusual banana has repeatedly behaved like this example. Closest description of a thought to be extinct maoli banana is the "PUHI" or "eel like". The bananas were said to curl around them selves when they are young. Maybe "into" then selves is more like it?

      @gorillapermacuture 5 місяців тому

      The West side of Kauai has seen a lot of GMO and associated chemicals so I would not rule out the chance that those chems may have advance the likelihood of beak deformities. I believe the these were both related to what happened in the first few hours after hatching. If addressed, they might have looked somewhat normal in adulthood.

    Are bananas even from Hawaii?

    • @gorillapermacuture
      @gorillapermacuture 5 місяців тому

      Nope, canoe plants brought at different times throughout the migration. Over hundreds of years of close cultivation many new varieties developed and were grown out. Bananas can produce new mutations somewhat often. There are a number of varieties of Ele Ele in the Hawaiian islands and other types of bananas in the world that develop black or red to their trunks. I know of three different Ele Ele in my area and a black trunk Balbisiana down the road. There is some suspect that banana seed might have made it to Hawaii in birds. Aloha!

      Well, if you don't keep control of the forest then the job becomes a lot harder and potentially more expensive. I have the fortune that the lot had been cleared 15 years prior. That lot could have costed thousands to clear otherwise. I know, for it has cost me around $15000 to have just half of the old growth trees cut at my Kauai lot and my wife and I did most of the ground crew work ourselves. Got a video on that. Life is about maintenance, Aloha
