Inversed Timing Belt Differential Robot Joint
Переглядів 38 тис.2 роки тому
I had an idea to make a timing belt differential joint inspired by the video "Inversed Timing Belt transmission" of Gustav Olsson. It is compact, has no backlash, and backdrivable. It can be used on the robotic arm (wrist joint). It's my first version of this drive with 400mm GT2 timing belts, there is a ratio of 1.6 between the inversed roll pulley and the pitch pulley. I used openbuilds wheel...

    interesting concept with belts, but I would still leave noisy planetary gears instead. the belt contact with ring gear does not look very assuring 😊

    • @b03tz
      @b03tz 7 місяців тому

      It has about 6 solid contact points....taking in the fact that these are plastic gears...I would bet it's pretty strong for its purpose. I'm more worried about the wear of those belts in those extreme angles...

    • @criznach
      @criznach Місяць тому

      @@b03tz At the end you can see wear on the edge of the belt. And if all 6 points of belt contact mesh properly, it's either a miracle, or very careful design.

    • @b03tz
      @b03tz Місяць тому

      @@criznachhow would that be a miracle? If you design a GT2 gear, it would be obvious those teeth all align. Only problem is that the belt goes straight for a tiny bit that might pull on the teeth. The belt wear is a bigger issue I think!

    • @criznach
      @criznach Місяць тому

      @@b03tz Might? Definitely. Number of teeth on an arc is different than number of teeth on a straight line.

      @b03tz Місяць тому

      @@criznachfor sure for sure! And in that case I guess if he calculated the rollers so that exactly 1 or 2 teeth are “skipped” it would be quite amazing!

    That belt drive system is weird! In a great way, though. It took me a while to figure out how the belt was wrapped around in there. It does not look over-strained either. Does the belt show signs of wear at the twist first?

  • @tHaH4x0r
    @tHaH4x0r 10 місяців тому

    Awesome design, extremely well done. The only thing I dont really like, is how the tensioner bolt is offset from the belt center, inducing a moment. Especially under higher loads this is likely going to be a point of failure (or at least cause reduced stiffness of the system under higher loads). Also I have heard stories of such 'inverse pulleys' not being able to cope very well with higher loads, with the belt detaching from the inside of the pulley. Still, I applaud the design, extremely compact.

    That is pretty primitive. The belts aren't designed to run while twisted like that, and they will wear out quickly.

    • @criznach
      @criznach Місяць тому

      @@gryn1s In commercial joints like in Kuka arms, the belts twist like this, but the length of the twist section is much longer. This creates a smaller ratio between the required outer length on a helix to the required center length of a straight line. Thereby reducing wear on the belts.

    nice design, special for diy 3d printed joints. I always prefer these belt solutions instead of 3d printed differantial gears because of the back-lash. But i can see no reduction. Incredible nice design! differential motion is very intriguing. The 3 rollers for each axis in the bottom part, the belt is in a direct line towards the next idler, did you compensate this error in the circular ringgear? Or did you left error as is? (about 0.47 mm of error for 30mm of distance over a R50 circle)?

      The edges fray because I use Openbuilds wheels which have only 6mm surface like the belts, so the inner pulley is also 6mm, so the belt chews in between. Typically pulleys are 1mm wider than the belt to prevent belts from fraying. Anyway, I agree that belts are not designed to bend over such a short distance. This project was testing an idea.
