The F-105 in the Vietnam War: A Fighter Pilot's First-Hand Account of Combat in the Thud
Col. John C. Wright, USAF (ret), gives a presentation of his Vietnam War experiences in the Republic F-105 to the 78th Fighter Squadron in October 1997. From 1966 to 1970, he flew the F-105 while assigned to the 12th Tactical Fighter Squadron (Kadena AB, Okinawa), the 67th TFS (Kadena AB), the 354th TFS (Takhli AB, Thailand), and the 357th TFS (Takhli AB). He flew 140 combat missions in the Thud in Southeast Asia while deployed to Takhli.
During a 24-year career as an Air Force pilot, Col. Wright primarily flew the F-84, B-47, B-58, F-105, and B-52, but he was also checked in many other military aircraft. Prior to his commissioning in 1951, Col. Wright served in the Texas Air National Guard. After his retirement in 1975, he spent 17 years running the Air Force Junior ROTC unit at Cooper High School in Abilene, Texas.
Part One of Col. Wright's presentation, where he discusses flying combat in the Republic F-84 during the Korean War, can be found here:

78th Fighter Squadron ("Bushmasters") Intel Officer's Fini Flight, Sep 1997
Переглядів 829 місяців тому
To be clear, the Air Force tradition of fini flights is a pilot thing. It's to mark a pilot's last flight with a unit or in an aircraft. As the squadron intelligence officer, I had no expectation of receiving the fini flight tradition of getting hosed down with water from a fire truck and with champagne upon returning from my final flight with the squadron. I had only been with the Bushmasters ...

    Nice that you got your Dad to give a talk to the squadron! My Dad had a similar career. F84 to Korea (474th I think), back home to Luke as an Air Gunnery IP, ATO at USAFA, B47s at Hunter! (then fighter TPS, space program, O-2s in VN, etc. Out in 1980 as an O-6!) Is your Dad still living?

    Joel, Thank you for the video. Seeing the 310th patch brought back some memories. I was USAF 85-88, 58th TFW, Luke AFB, egress. The 310th was one of our squadrons, along with the 311th, 312th and 314th. Had a friend of mine that flew F-84's out of Taegu (K-2) in 1952. He was a P-47 driver during WWII, got 11 missions in before the war ended. CPT Merv "Shabby" Reed was his name. Shabby was an Ops Officer. On one mission, Shabby was hit by ground fire in the left wheel well, blowing a hole through the wing big enough to put a bar stool through. He stated that "when you look at the top of your left wing, you shouldn't be able see your wheel". He was way up north when he got hit and he wasn't sure he was going to make it home. As he flew south, he kept calling the next closest airfield, but since his F-84 was still flying fine, no fuel leaks, no hydraulic issues, he just kept flying south. He eventually made it back to Taegu. When he attempted to lower the gear, the left gear came down, but the right one stayed in the well. Yes, that's correct, the left gear came down. Perplexed and worried, he cycled the gear handle, 3 green. Except for the large hole in the left wing, it was an uneventful landing. As he was getting out of the jet, he saw a Jeep headed his way. He knew it was the base CO. Shabby thought, great, I'm in for it now. Shabby expected a royal ass chewing. As I understand it, Shabby wasn't suppose to be flying missions at that time. Not 100% sure of this though. So the CO pulled up, champagne and cigars in-hand, yelled at Shabby to "get in". They drove off to have drinks with the rest of the wing. As it turned out, Shabby was the first jet that had been hit by enemy fire, and the CO seen that was a reason to celebrate, especially considering that Shabby made it home. I have a great picture of Shabby on top of his F-84 kneeling next to the hole in his left wing. Joel, if you'd like a digital copy of it, DM me and I'll email it to you.

    Thanks for sharing. My grandfather worked on the assembly line for the straight wing F-84 Thunderjet at Republic on Long Island, NY. He left when they converted over to making the Thunderstreak. A lot of issues your dad spoke of, my grandfather mentioned, regarding to the Thunderjets performance. With Thunderstreaks and Sabers symbolizing the air war in Korea, I’m glad to see some Thunderjet content out there finally.

    • @JoelWright2-ir6el
      @JoelWright2-ir6el 18 днів тому

      Wow. That is awesome your grandfather built Thunderjets! After the war, my dad had another F-84 assignment at Luke AFB, AZ. I remember him telling me that he used to go up to the Republic factory to pick up brand new F-84s and fly them back to Luke. The straight winged Thunderjet may not have been sexy, and like most early jets was underpowered, by my dad loved flying the -84. He had a soft spot for Republic since he later flew the F-105 in Vietnam.

    Was the air wing aboard Midway a regular size airwing ? That flight deck looked like it would've had a difficult time accommodating all those airplanes, The A-6 and F-4 were much heavier/larger than aircraft of the time CV-41 was built.

    • @JoelWright2-ir6el
      @JoelWright2-ir6el 22 дні тому

      I'll defer to someone who knows more about carrier air wings from this period. I don't know if CVWs were sized differently for Midway versus the later "super carrier" classes.

After his tour in Thailand, he continued to fly RF-4s in Okinawa, this time with the 15th TRS. But Okinawa was his last RF-4 assignment. I believe about 500 RF-4s were built, so given the relatively small community, it’s possible he might have crossed paths with your ROTC instructor.

      This is incorrect. The large flight deck was in place for the April 1971 deployment. Her original straight deck was modified to an angle deck in beginning in 1955, similar to Coral Sea and FDR. IN Feb 1966 she entered Hunters Point where her flight deck was enlarged from 2.8 acres to 4 acres. I’m a former crew member who knows how to use Google.

    Ok Joel. Quit horsing around. That was top notch narration, information and it was engaging. You were always good with this sort of thing. I have see several military history channels on hear and quite often think of you when I watch their videos. You really need to find a niche you want to make videos in of that historical type and run with it. You have the right voice and presentation. Do it man. I remember you talking at length and detail and in high school about WWII naval battles. Maybe that niche is full, but with your background and experience, perhaps more recent exercises may be fair game. Honestly, folks today do not remember the cold war and the many near misses and nerve racking operations that occurred during those years. Anyway, fantastic video Joel. Enjoyed it immensely.

    I was a dependent when my dad was stationed on Shaw from 1979-1983, where he spent most of his time in the 9th Air Force Safety office. He was a pilot, however, so he also would take O-2 Skymasters over to Myrtle Beach AFB (BRAC'd in 1991) and would then fly A-10's out of there to keep his currency up. I have good memories of sitting in classes at Millwood Elementary School in Sumter and hearing the "BRRRRRRTTTT" of the A-10 cannons in the distance as they would hit the firing range. We left Sumter in 1983, my dad going to Saudi for a year teaching them flight tactics in their F-5 (he spent a number of years as a T-38 instructor in the early 70's) before coming back to the states a year later, where we moved to Homestead AFB and he ended his career there flying the same aircraft he entered the USAF in, the F-4.

    You don't need to hold the start button to stat the car. Just press it once and the car will keep the starter on just long enough to get the engine running.
