Hiking Otto's Trail on July 4, 2024: Watching the Flag Raising on Independence Monument
It's become a tradition with Nancy and I myself to watch the raising of the American Flag on July 4th at Colorado National Monument. Every Independence Day a group of rangers and search & rescue personnel climb the 450 feet to the top of Independence Monument and raise Old Glory. It stays up for a week, then they climb back to the top, take it down, and stow away the flagpole for another year.
We usually go to the Independence Monument Overlooks, which we did this year, because park rangers have spotting scopes set-up for people to watch the climbers. There's always a loud cheer from all the overlooks surrounding the monument when onlooker see the flag waving in the breeze. There's something inspiring about it. It make you stick your chest out a little further with pride in America. Oh, I know we've had some rough times. But when I see that flag I think of those who have died so that we can have the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.
After we see the flag raised we always walk out Otto's Trail. It's a short 1/4 mile trail that goes along the top of a fin that extends into Wedding Canyon and parallel to Monument Canyon. It is a hot trail as there's no shade and you are fully exposed to direct sunlight above the hot sandstone beneath. All along the trail there are overlooks with magnificent views of the nearby canyons, while in the distance you an see the Bookcliffs, the Grand Valley, the Colorado River, etc. At the end there's an overlook surrounded by a railing. There's where we met Thomas this year and he showed us his photography equipment and the awesome pictures he took of those climbing Independence Monument.
In this video we try and point out some things of interest that most would simply walk-by: the different plant life, rocks, soil, etc. I hope you enjoy our little walk.

Most people make resolutions for the New Year. They think that a New Year means a new chance to get things done. However, after 2 weeks, most resolutions are abandoned. As a matter of fact, the 2nd Friday of January is now referred to as "Quitters Day". How sad. Habakkuk says to write out your vision and then share it with others. Not just YOUR vision, but GOD'S vision. You see, when God shows ...

Just west of Cañon City, CO is a unique, one-way, drive that was constructed in 1905 by 60 inmates from a local prison. People don't realize how far the effects of wildfires can reach. Here we were, 19 miles east of Utah, and we were being effected by wildfires in California, Nevada, and western Utah. Smoke from those fires had drifted into The Grand Valley obscuring the views. The whole time we were in Arizona it was almost unbearably hot with daytime highs reaching 105 to 110 degrees. While in Bouse, AZ it hit 117 degrees. So one could ask why would you drive out into the desert on an already hot day? Believe it or not it's actually ...

Don’t get discouraged, do what the doctor says, and do the physical therapy everyday no matter how you feel. That’s the key. Stick with it. I’ll be curious to know how you’re doing. God bless.

    Everyone is different. I had a knee revision ie they removed an old TKR I had done in 2000 because it was worn out and replaced it with a new one. The surgeon warned me it was very painful procedure. Guess what I only needed mild pain killers for 2 weeks that’s all. I could walk up and down stairs within 1 month. 10 months on it feels great. Don’t assume the worse outcome

    • @PaulEstep
      @PaulEstep 2 місяці тому

      True. Not everyone responds the same way to a medical procedure. Some have a higher pain threshold than others. Some procedures involve more medical intervention than others. Also, with all the strides in surgical procedures it’s making most operations an outpatient procedure where before it was days or weeks in the hospital.

    Sorry to double comment but you mentioned ghosts and I can tell you as a chef who has worked in resorts usually in touristy towns around the country, they do tend to have big reputations for being haunted. The shining movie was not so unique in that a lot of tourist towns become empty during their off seasons and when the first few people come back after an off season places like that can have a haunted feel to them. Cape cod used to be known for having lots of haunted houses and there are quite a few others like Hot Springs, AR and Virginia City, NV and it doesn't hurt the tourism either. Btw people like me love those high energy tourist towns, but I know most normal people are more relaxed in quiet places, but I am not normal as most my friends will tell ya lol.

    That’s a Female hogan, the male hogan is more of a tipi structure that has a door built as a square shape but both have their different purposes for its uses. Built with both logs and mud to make the summers and winters bearable, beautifully built will definitely keep family’s warm and cool during harsh weathering.
