First race weekend of the Danish Masters season. We delivered maximum performance and won the three races - even battling a bit with some GT cars such as Ginetta G4 and Lotus Elan.

This is probably the first time in a hundred years a homolegated PV 544 S has won a race overall against both the TC cars and GT cars of the pre 66 era. This is due to some amazing driving in wet and very slippery conditions where the car was setup perfectly.

Had some good fun racing against my fellow pre-66 colleagues. Hard to keep a fast and late-braking Ford Falcon behind. Also this time around our Volvo lead the race for the entire pre-66 class also setting fastest laptime in the wet conditions, thereby earning a Pole Position spot for the final race!!!!

Hello from Belgium. Good video. What a good result you have achieved. Good driving at the limit, but also incredible preparation. A 544 is a bit of a truck compared to a G4 or an Elan. Can you talk about this incredible race preparation? THANKS
Thank you for your comment. We try to do our best with what we've got. When participating in a race we always service our brakes, check the engine if it's running optimal and smooth, and then it's all about predicting the best tire pressure according to the weather.
What intake manifold is that? Looks nice!
We use a MANGOLETSI B18-B20 🙂

Revs well but a lot of blow by? Some popping early on?
Yes we have blow by, however this does not affect our power too much.

That's not so much an engine sound, as it is a Weber sound. And what a truly fabulous sound that is! 😀 Sweet revving little B18.

It's nice that we are so even on the smaller Danish tracks. It probably would be too big a handfull on larger tracks such as SPA or similar 😃
@@krarupnielsen-vintageracing16 I with 3 others race a Mitsubishi all wheel drive V6 it's just for fun and it raises money for childhood cancer. We do a 12 hour race so each driver has a drive for 1 hour stint , so fuel stops have to be a curtain time can't do them too fast or your get penalised but driver changers have to be done as quick as possible. Its great fun and we have been on the podium a few times. Its great to watch your car and your driving style. Although the cars we race with and against are different makes than the cars you race with but same sort of vintage as you are racing. Keep the videos coming I love watching them and also how you have included the cars coming behind.

great......where did you source the lamp for the shift light?
Unfortuneately I can't really remember where we got it from - it's the same lamp cover as for the indicators on the B pillar just made in the red colour instead.
The indicator repeaters from the front wings of a lot of older cars are very commonly used - and most accessory shops stock them for trailers etc.
May I ask what tell spec of the engine is. I'm currently building an amazon race car
Our engine is the original B18. Since we´re racing according to Group 3 (Special Touring Cars) we can bore the engine to the maximum of 2000ccm. Also we can use double Weber 45 and a custom camshaft. Our friends driving in the Amazon here in Denmark only compete in Group 2 where boring of the engine is prohibited. Also they must use the double SU carburettors. Have a nice day, BR Frederik

Congrats for your great driving skills and thus the racing results. Your PV is extremely fast, wow!! :) Are you allowed to increase cc (B20+) in the Danish series or are you stuck with the B18? Maybe it's the mic or my ears, but it sounds as if the engine is running on SUs not Sidedrafts, which were actually homolgated only for the later Volvos? But with the power your PV delivers, i'm not sure... I assume that the camshaft is a more modern profile than the old Volvo racing profiles. I used to have a 300 deg F-cam in my Amazon some decades ago. Hope to see some more footage next season. Cheers, Patrick
Thank you Patrick! Glad you like our videos and there will definately be more of this stuff next season ;). According to the periodic correct regulations (pre '66) we are allowed to bore the original B18 to a maximum of 2000cc. This is due to the fact that our PV is tuned as a group 3 Special Touring Car for this period up to 1966. This also means we can run double Webers giving more power than the usual SU's run by group 1 an 2 touring cars. We also use a non-original and special camshaft according to the regulations. Thank You Carole Langreau. Glad you like it. It's a 1964 Volvo PV 544 and it's an original Sport. We have around 170 bhp and weigh between 900-1000 kg. Since we're racing according to App. K we are racing periodic correct tires - Dunlop CR65 - both in the dry and wet. That's why it's so slippery as the tires have a hard time draining water from the surface of the tarmac. :)

How far from stock in the your motor and what RPM does your red light come on at? I've got a project 1965 544. Not going to race it, but I still like watching people race theirs.
It is tuned in compliance to the Appendix K and the way the Group 3 cars were made back in the day. B18, double Weber Carburetors and custom exhaust manifold. It flashes at 7000 rpm. Sounds cool with your project ;)
@@krarupnielsen-vintageracing16 Now I need to look up the specs for Group 3 and Appendix K. Just for knowledge, of course. I don't think a swap from the stock dual carbs to Webers is in my future. I think my Dad did that with his , back in the 60s. He always said he could rev the engine until the valves started to float.
@@johnwilliamson847 Many homologated Volvo racecars (544, P1800 and 122s) have had great succes with achieving high bhp with a dual SU setup. hehe sounds about right ;)

Thanks! It was a very special race in which I had a hard time getting passed the Falcon and having to deal with the Mini from behind all the time (sort of two way batteling throughout the race). But it was so cool to finally overtake all of them ;)
I heard today the PV544 Sport was quite potent with 95 hp. It would easily reach 180 km/h (112 mph) as it debuted in 1958.
Indeed it was... the most winning touring car in both rally and curcuit racing in the late 50's and beginning of the 60's in Denmark and Scandinavia. In addition to its speed it was also very sturdy.
