Really, 40K is a spit in the bucket to what they produce per year. With as many new engines and transmissions hitting the roads, there might be more sooner or later, but overall, Toyota is still up there with reliability.

I feel like the new engine should have been based on the old V10 then add bi-turbo and mild hybrid systems. Giving them something around 750hp.

It would make more sense for the GR86 to have a detuned version of Toyota’s 2.0l 4 cyl that they have in the Supra. Either detuned a tad, or just make a 1.8 version of it off the base. But it could just be a licensing / contract obligation with Subaru vs a logical, best case scenario decision.

Upwards 50k for 300 *Crank* horsepower is a waste. I can spend that money on a used car with a V8 and have a much better starting point for mods than any four cylinder. Personally I'd spend no more than 30k out the door for a car making 250 - 300 crank from factory. Also, I'd argue that the reliability of the engine is due strongly in part to how people maintain their cars. A lot of people buying these cars are young adults that don't maintain their cars the way they should and probably operate them outside of normal parameters.

Boxer engines aren't reliable? Volkswagen would disagree. Porsche would disagree. Even Honda has had a wildly successful boxer engine for 50 years now. The vast majority of current piston engine aircraft are also boxer engines.

Like all big empires, large corporations also tumble. Toyota is no exception. Their recent value changes are starting to show. Instead of being an affordable, reliable vehicle that ran forever, they are now producing small problematic, hot, over-tasked engines, have a lot of recalls, and are forgetting their passionate consumers who chose 'Toyota' and not 'BMW'. The remake of the Supra, IMO is a huge fail. Releasing it as an automatic was another FAIL. And now killing it and bringing in a (undoubtedly) problematic turbocharged 4-cylinder will cause even more issues. I don't know what they are thinking... but I give them 5-10 years before they lose the top spot and are maybe not even in the top 5 manufacturers. Good job folks, ruin a perfectly good company, and for what? Short term profits? Better gas mileage? (I currently own 2 toyotas, love the brand, and have previously owned a handful as well).

It will have problems but Toyota uses Just In Time so they will be able to fix problems quickly. They do a batch of 50k vehicles and can recall the vehicles within the batch that have problems. Six sigma is what makes Toyota best in quality
