How to Tune Your LingTing Chromatic Kalimba LT-K34V
Переглядів 839Рік тому
Tuning a chromatic LingTing is a completely different beast from tuning your standard kalimba. While I don't generally recommend doing this because it's so tedious and time consuming, it is useful to know and there may come a time where you want to adjust a tine or put your kalimba in a different key entirely. A precision screwdriver set is a MUST here. If you can't find one at your local hardw...

I finally got a Hugh Tracey Chromatic Treble Kalimba from @kalimbamagic! I've wanted one of these since very early on in my kalimba journey and I'm really happy to share the unboxing experience with you. It's a different style than my other chromatic kalimbas, with tines on both sides, so I think it will be a delightful challenge to learn. You can pick one up here: www.kalimbamagic.com/shop/hug...

"Kiss the Rain" - Yiruma (April Yang arrangement) Kalimba
Переглядів 2442 роки тому
April Yang's cover of "Kiss the Rain" by Yiruma was the first song I ever heard on the kalimba and so I figured it appropriate for it to be my first video. I was already a fan of Yiruma's music, and to hear it from such a beautiful instrument was magical. I knew then that I wanted to learn it! Played on a 17 key Hluru resin ocean kalimba. I do not own this song or arrangement.

      I just got mine on Tuesday and absolutely love it. Worth it to me! The Allen wrench (tool) in mine DOES fit (unlike hers). A few tines were out of tune. The rest were yp to 3.5 too sharp and since I'm so picky I went ahead and returned all of it. It sounds so great! Every note has a nice ring to it. The tuner app I use is DaTuner.

      I think this model of LingTing is worth having because it is pretty unique in the kalimba market, even so long after its release. Having a chromatic kalimba that A) has all the tines on the same side and B) has a corresponding sharp note for every lower tine makes it quite versatile. The Seeds chromatic (and I think Hluru makes one similar to that) is nice for having a few low notes, but making chords gets tough sometimes due to sacrificing those middle sharps. My Hugh Tracey chromatic is fun and has corresponding flats for every tine, but those are all on the back and not being able to see them can be disorienting even though that setup is easier for fast playing.

    This is the most comprehensive tuning guide for LT-K34V that I've found on YT. Things mentioned like un-fitted wrench key (That comes with the kalimba) could damage the screw cap easily, The pitch while tuning a tine is not only up to the tine position but also, the pressure that screw pressed to the tine. With these two valuable points are worth to follow and subscribed the channel already. By the way, the newer lots of this model has changed the screw type (just a plane hex shape)and the provided wrench which much easier to tune.

    I finally received my Espougle kalimba. The sound of this kalimba is good. I now have 3 kalimba in total, 2 of HLURU and 1 Espougle. I think among the three kalimba I have, the HLURU flat board 21 keys made with black walnut wood gives the best sound. It’s also the lightest in weight among the three. I realized the weight of the kalimba is important to me, as my other HLURU is much heavier and I get tired after I while. The second best is also HLURU,(made with two different kind of wood). The sound of it is more delightful than the Espougle. However it is heavier than the Espougle. The Espougle does surprise me that the high notes are better than the HLURU (the one made with 2 different of wood) when straight out of the box. In summary, I am happy with my purchase of the Espougle kalimba. On top of the sound, the carving and the case are very nice too. Many thanks to Starlight Kalimba’s videos. You helped me to choose a kalimba which is worth to buy. Thank you.

    Worst puzzle in the history of puzzles. The stickers I received with mine don't match what the booklet says they should be. Decided I wanted the keys in piano format instead (for ease of learning). Didn't work out too well. Put them back on size order but can't remember which are upper keys and which are lower keys. No stickers on the keys because stickers don't match booklet. So stressed. I should have just bought a Wei Wuxian flute. At least I learned recorder in primary school and you can't mix up the order of the holes in an attempt at tuning 😅 Thank you for this video!!! Do you have a link please to that tuner?

I fell it is simpler to learn and I think standers kalimbas have 17. • @starlightkalimba
      @starlightkalimba Рік тому

      This kalimba comes tuned from the factory and the tines are held tightly in place with screws, so it really won't go out of tune with normal use. A few tines were ever-so-slightly off pitch, but it wasn't so bad that it sounded terrible. Since making the video I feel like the sound of this kalimba is still bell-like and beautiful, but because of the sympathetic resonance there are some songs that don't sound as good on this one as they do on kalimbas with only one row of tines. Overall I much prefer this one to my SEEDS chromatic kalimba, even if I don't get those low notes here.

    • @fuckbored4724
      @fuckbored4724 Рік тому

      @@starlightkalimba Thanks. I've been contemplating whether to get this chromatic or the chill angels chromatic. I actually like the layout of notes on this lingting chromatic better than the layout on the chill angels chromatic, but the sound of the chill angels sounds a bit better overall in my opinion. Maybe the sympathetic resonance issue is jsut an issue with chromatic kalimbas in general? I'm not sure as I've never played one.

    • @starlightkalimba
      @starlightkalimba Рік тому

      @@fuckbored4724 Please let me know how the Chill Angels kalimba is if you do get one! I've considered it but haven't tried one out yet. It's cool that they tune them so there are no duplicate notes, but I also preferred the idea of every upper tine being a sharp of the tine below it so that's why I've gone with other chromatics first. I would say that sympathetic resonance is present in all chromatic kalimbas just by the nature of the instrument, but I've noticed it's definitely more pronounced in some models than others.

      Honestly I think the kalimba is such a welcoming instrument for new players. The tines are arranged so that it's very easy to make chords and melodies even without prior musical study, so it's pretty tough to hit a "wrong" note. Most of them are light and portable, and you can find some pretty inexpensive ones so getting started isn't a huge investment. It's also fairly easy now to find tabs and instructions online if you want to develop more skill with it.

    Very nicely played🍃🍃🍃 I play her version as well. I'm three months in learning the Kalimba. I've never played any instrument and I'm thoroughly enjoying it! My only trouble is my left thumbnail especially gets a chip-dip (I know, a funny description) in the center of it from playing so much and I have to keep filing my nail down. It looks like your nails are natural, if they are, how do you keep them from chipping?

    • @starlightkalimba
      @starlightkalimba 2 роки тому

      Congratulations on the three month mark! I think the kalimba makes music so accessible. My nails are natural and learning to maintain them for playing has been tough at times. I still sometimes accidentally trim them too short! Mostly I try not to let them get too long so they don't snag on things when I'm not playing and I file them in a rounded shape so they don't bend as easily (think archway construction). I've seen some other players use clear nail polish to help harden their nails, or an Alaska Pik, but I've never used them so can't really speak to how well they work. Best of luck on your kalimba journey!
