    Measured at 100.9mph at the plate if it was measured like today 5-10 ft back the calculation is roughly 107-108mph

    Nolan's radar pitches were measured at speed at the plate. Today's pitches are measured leaving the pitchers hands, where they are at their fastest. You can check frame rate of old video footage to determine how fast his pitches were if based upon today's measuring standards.

    108? We'll never know. If anyone could do it though it was Ryan. If you consider he was clocked at 98 in his last start so imagine how fast he was he was throwing 20 years younger and with 4000+ less inning on that arm. Not to mention he was the most un-hittable pitcher in the history of the game and most of those years it was just 2 pitches that he used.

    Why don't they just take the video and count how many frames it took for the pitch to reach home plate. Then calculate the speed from that. Video is usually 24 or 30 frames per second

    • @redcast104
      @redcast104 3 місяці тому

      i’ve wondered that myself. probably 24 frames doesn’t give you enough data, since the difference between say 104 and 108 is small numerically. 100 mph is about 150 ft/sec, 60.5 feet to home means it’s about .4 seconds for the pitch to cross the plate. increase the speed by 4% would shave off .016 seconds give or take and 24 fps= one frame every .04 seconds. so whether you judge the ball to have passed the plate halfway thru the final frame or 70% through is a swing of ~2mph in pitch speed, and that’s a hard judgement to make, especially with this angle, since next frame the ball’s in the mitt (and you’ll have a similar difficulty on the release). still, i’m open to the idea it’s possible

    • @dustinteasdale6091
      @dustinteasdale6091 3 місяці тому

      There was a documentary called Fastball where used physics and the speed it was clocked at when it crossed home plate as that’s how it was done then and that is where the 108 theoretical speed came from.

    Aroldis Chapman fastest pitch was clocked at 105.9 mph not 105.1 mph. I know this because he held the same exact record at the same exact time Zdeno Chara record slapshot until he shattered that andnow he still hold the record but it’s 108.8 but even thought these talk about he reached 109.2 mph but that’s hockey
