Skiing in Indiana Is... Perfect... North!
So it turns out I have never skied Indiana! Well, today (actually December 12th), that changes! I had a lot of fun during my short visit to Perfect North Slopes. I'm excited to return later this season to get the full mid-season experience, but their snowmaking capability blew me away. The terrain is excellent, especially for the area, and their operation was super smooth!

Uphill at Buck, Park at Hyland, & Bumps at Welch = Perfect Day!
I'm 78 and have been skiing for almost 60 years. Boyne Mountain is where I still mostly race. However, Nubs Nob has the best groomed snow, the friendliest people, and with the free beginners hill (with a two place chairlift), I have got a lot of people introduced to skiing. It is one of the few places when you can ski for free when you hit age 70 (which Boyne stopped just before I hit 70). They also know how to properly hold the chairs so that they don't whack the back of your legs when loading. My race group previously went to Searchmont, north of Sault St. Marie, Ontario where we raced the Downhill which was a mini World Cup style race with blind turns, jumps, and high speed turns, all in 700 feet of vertical. It was a hoot!
I work here
Thank you so much for this! I am taking my daughter tomorrow on the beginner runs and it was nice to see a visual of where to go and take her safely!! So appreciated!
That’s why we do them- thanks for watching and enjoy your time on the snow! Such a special sport ❄️🙏❄️🙏
Buck hill and wild mountain are also very good
They certainly are, but I wouldn’t consider them “hidden gems” most Midwest skiers/riders have heard of them before in my experience
How do you not include nubs nov. outside of the Bohemia. It’s the most visited family owned resort in Michigan.
Nubs was included in my must-visit video ( go watch it here: ua-cam.com/video/up00S7h8B2k/v-deo.htmlsi=Ueqzh5qteDbGRK81), so it wasn't in contention for this video (this is an expansion of that original video)
Thumbs Up Matthew! I loved the "hot laps" you were showing. I have heard of Perfect North, but I don't really see myself driving that far to ski it. I hope to skiya maybe over the MLK weekend. Ask anyone, I am a lot of fun to ski with.
Heck ya Terry! Keep the stoke up and I hope to see you out there
White Cap in Wisconsin is a nice little resort as well. Three mountain peaks give it a “out west” feel in a much smaller package.
Watched some of your videos for the first time a couple of days ago and wondered if you were going to do one on Perfect. Boom, there it is! Nice video. Thanks for giving some attention to our ski hill. We think it has good variety for a modest hill.
Oh it’s fantastic! Stoked to make it back later this season for the full season effect
@ Awesome! Hope the hill is in full swing when you return. If you don’t mind me asking, what camera and mounts do you use?
@ 90% on a GoPro 11 with chest mount. I think there are 4 shots from the GH6 and 2 from Mavic 3
@ ok, thank you!
Bro really said nubs knob instead of Caberfae.
Great list. Nubs is my favorite. I'd also recommend Searchmont in northern Ontario. It's a very remote ski area about 45 minutes from Sault St. Marie. The drive up goes through a river gorge with some scenic rocky terrain.
Learned alot .....thamks, was trying to figure those snowcats out as i went up the lifts..
That has to be tough skiing on such small hills. What is the vertical 300-400 feet? I live in the Northwest and we have a small local hill that 2250 vertical feet and about 2000 acres. Only 4 chairs with only 1 high speed quad that goes to the top. Since it is Christmas week we have lots of out-of-town skiers, but most of the time especially during the week we locals feel like we have a private resort.
Obviously we’d all love to be skiing 3000+ verts but the Midwest certainly has its perks. The park scene is unmatched. Rope parks with easy/quick access is something you’ll likely see even out west areas starting to adopt in the next handful of years (go look at Big Skys comment sections - lots of requests for ropes) Before/after/during work laps are amazing. A lot of our areas are super close to metros and open late at night so it can yield ALOT of skiing The passion is real. It’s easy to be excited about skiing massive terrain on an epic powder day. Midwesterners are just stoked to be on snow; kinda cool to have a less BS skiing experience It’s cheap. Pretty much every ski area in the Midwest offers a season pass (if you buy early enough) for sub 300 bucks. Ya the Midwest isn’t like anything terrain wise out west, but it’s really not as bad as you think here.
@@MidwestSkiers Just found out this summer the local hill is changing out Chair #1, an ancient double to a detachable quad. This will be huge for accessing the upper part of the mountain faster. We have night skiing Wednesday thru Saturday nights. The whole mountain is not open for night skiing but it does include a main run that goes from our top all the way to the base so it has 2250 vertical feet. I am not into terrain parks but the hill also has a rope tow serviced terrain park area. So besides the four chairs we have the rope tow in the park, a rope tow and magic lift for the kids in the beginner area. Too small to be on Epic or Ikon. We are on the Indy Pass. An Unlimited Pass is higher than your Midwest prices. About $750, but there are midweek passes and night skiing passes that are a lot cheaper.
This video was a nice break from reading articles about chair lift malfunctions left and right out west. YEW! \\m//
#3 Baby!!
So jealous! It’s on my bucket list for sure!
You gotta go!
Excellent video, only two hours from Columbus, Ohio. Definitely going to give it a try. Merry Christmas.
I think Granite Peak belongs on this list
If you live in Iowa, I’d just drive to Colorado 😂
Some people like to ski more than just 5 days a season 🤷
@@MidwestSkiers Yes if you live close to these resorts. I live around Des Moines area, driving to any one on your list except Hyland Hills is over 10 hours, besides it’s awesome to enjoy hot springs after skiing at Iron Mountain Hot Spring😮💨. Sometimes there are cheap flight tickets to Denver as well.
Ahhh Perfect North….if you’re not with the one you love, love the one you’re with. I ❤ PN!!!
Caberfae all the way. On the way to Boyne and Nub's from the south.
Ah! Cab is so great! Surprised it wasn’t mentioned more…. But maybe that’s a good thing 🤫
@MidwestSkiers my grandparents had a cabin there. My first run was around 1974 with leather boots and cable bindings.
Just took my daughter there on 12/20 for her first ever time skiing. She is hooked. All the magic carpets are great for first timers. They also do a great job making snow
Heck ya!!! Love it!
Real surprised to see Hyland Hills as a #5 visit over Welsh Village or Buck Hill. By far Welsh Village is the best near the Minneapolis metro, and with less than a hour commute from most of the Twin Cities there is a reason most rank Welsh as their 2nd favorite to Lutsen. And Buck Hill really gets the nod over Hyland as far as more vertical and more runs. But it’s rich history as the Metro area pioneer in racing, snow making and grooming. If Buck Hill hadn’t developed the sport in the 50’s , I doubt Hyland, Welsh, Afton would exist as they do today. In fact at one time, the metro area had over 18 ski areas that sprung off Bucks first efforts in snowmaking, and helping those other areas tackle that expensive investment. And it was Buck Hill that first brought the Tucker Snow- cat to the metro area , and then the Stone family ended up buying Tucker and brought its operations here to Bloomington MN to sell that technology to all the other fast expanding areas in the late 60’s early 70’s. Yes Buck is a racers mountain, providing more racers to colleges and national fame due to bringing on Eric Sailer an Austrian Champion and the guy that ran Western Race Camps that Midwesterners all attended. But they also have made great efforts to develop their snowboarding and park areas. With a great Snowboard shop just up the hill from their parking lot, the privately owned Zombie Snowboard. I was a Hyland Hills beginner and pass holder in my early days of youth skiing.,But as soon as I could convince parents and friends who had parents that would drive us the extra 10mikes, I was Buck bound and only returned to Hyland a couple times and always disappointed by the lack of terrain to compare with other metro areas.
Owner is a man named Chip Perfect. Great name, nice guy. Paoli Peaks next?
Oh ya Chip is the man!
Does he play golf?
There is no better-run operation in the Midwest. The only mountain East of the Mississippi that beats Perfect North is Wachusett in Massachusetts. They're both guest-focused and make the most out of every snowmaking opportunity.
Very solid operation! Haven’t been to Wachussett, but love Carolyn! Run into here every year at the national convention
Merry Christmas, everyone! If you enjoy this more raw-style video - let me know! I'm trying to give everyone some quick looks into ski areas while I am out filming/working for the day :)
raw style seems to be pretty good love the video
Good to hear!
Great videos! we need a Lutsen or Granite Peak full-walkthrough!
Totally!! just gotta wait until they get 100% open :)
Sundown near Dubuque, IA is my favorite. Very local vibe and a decently steep headwall. Park on top next to cornfields and ski down into a valley. Very cool place. Never been to any of the bigger Midwest ski areas. Now I live in Telluride, but have fond memories of that place.
Sundown is sick! I love their “barn” bar as well halfway down. Such a sweet place.
Great info! Nub's Knob sounds awesome 👌 Hyland is inspiring!!! Love it
I live in the mid west and its snowed less than an inch so far altogether
That’s ight pretty much every major ski area has snowmaking!
Ive never liked blackjack, granite is fire, troll at 1 am drunk is a must, spirit mountain for park, lutsen has always left me disappointed even while skiing there for free. Boyne is really good
Nubs blows away boyne
So sweet, loving the Minneapolis ski vibe. Have a Merry Christmas 🎄🎅⛄❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
No love for Terry Peak? I know most people don't consider it Midwest, but maybe it's the western edge of the Midwest. Love the videos!!
Haha oh Terry Peak! I think the problem is not many have been there to be honest. It’s kinda on an island so unless you’re heading west it’s often less traveled. It’s certainly on my list for the next couple seasons though!
Not a fan of your number 1, but I do like this idea of a midwest hills need to be lap-able. With Lap-able being a priority I'd like to submit Mt. Brighton in Brighton Michigan. Proudly featured in the classic ski movie Aspen Extreme. Let me get a shout from my people at Mt. Brighton!
This list is trash. 🤷♂️
Granite Peak needs to be on this list
FINALLY SNOWRIVER ❄️❄️ going there in a week
If you’re going to Black River Basin go all the way over to Capstan lift is where it’s at. Trust me it’s my favorite stomping ground, Oh BTW, you’ll enjoy it, as your family or group will enjoy both mountains.
@ I love black River. Except we cancelled our trip cause it’s supposed to rain and neither hill has everything open yet
@@timmiboi2745 I haven’t been up there since the new investor took over, last time I was there we stayed at the maple house close to the bunny hill.
@@M4753m usually we go every year but the weather was bad last year so I haven’t been either. It looks really nice though
@@timmiboi2745 Yeah, want to get back up there as well miss hitting the far right lift, where not to many people go and rarely no snowboarders head over there.
I love that Welch got on the list. So much variety especially when the back bowl opens up.
They teach PMTS there and not the antiquated PSIA stuff too.
just watched both this video and your top 5, i think i really do agree. i haven't been to many of them, but the ones i have or have heard of i totally agree. the ones i completely agree with based on my knowledge are Lutsen, mt bohemia, hylland hills and giants ridge. Have yet to go to hylland and bohemia but have heard tons of good things about them. going to bohemia in febuary :). But Lutsen and Giants Ridge i have been to many times as i live in northern mn and they are amazing. really enjoyable videos!
during work is to relatable
Giants Ridge! Seriously an amazing place.
got to ride giants ridge last year on way back from lutsen, its a great riding hill.
you should check out detroit mountain at some point
I’ve been! Cool little zone for sure!
I'd add Whitecap. By far my favorite WI resort. Best fish fry too!
You nailed it. Blackjack packs a big punch for a smaller hill. Great steeps, trees and powder. Gotta hit the other 4 4 sure. My top 5 are 1.) BOHO, 2.) Nubs, 3.) Lutsen 4.) Ripley and 5.) Schuss.
Nubs sucks lol
@@maness2112 I'm guessing you're a B.O.Y.N.E. kinda guy who enjoys hacky sack filler for snow.
Caberfae!
See you there tmr! Lol
None, don't bother. They all suck. I live here and I don't even bother at this point
You seem like a fungi to ski with.
Booooooooooo
ANY skiing is better than no skiing.
This guys never been to boho obviously…. What a clown
Hyland Hills shout out! Heck Yeah!!
I know it's in Canada, but it's within an hour of the US border... Searchmont north of Sault St. Marie, US/Canada. 750 feet vertical, lake effect snow, plenty of off-piste terrain and gorgeous scenery. And to add to the appeal... nearby Stokely Creek X-country and the Bellevue Valley B&B, run by my dear friends Ehn and Robin, with guided back-country skiing.
It does look sick! I’d love to check it out sometime- gotta check off the full Midwest first though!
Have you guys made a video of the breakdown of a snow gun? Not how it works and that stuff like they physical features like the nitty gritty stuff. Im not really sure how to explain it
We haven’t- I’d be happy to, but that’s very brand specific. They are all just a bit different in the parts they use and where they are located. Is there a brand/type of gun you’re most interested in?
@@MidwestSkiers Technoalpin in general because thats what what my home resort uses but specifically maybe a TT10 or A TR10 or a t40 but really any Technoalpin fan gun I would love to see.
To explain it more what i want to see is if i was a new snowmaker on the job how would i move and connect and startup a snow gun
