I love this movie! It’s a shame so much of the ‘From a Basement on the Hill’ content won’t get completely processed and mixed for a proper high quality release. Anyone know why the owners of that stuff are withholding so much of Elliott’s music he wanted out there?

Oh, man! The wristband! 😢 That's such a precious keepsake! I'm so glad it survived and wasn't thrown away. Elliott was such a sweetie pie to have cherished a gift for that long! Always, always missed.

Boy this artist was phenomenal

i just cried on going throughout the parts of this documentary, im 18 yrs old and I’ve never felt more connected to an artist or moved by an artist the way Elliott does for me. I am completely in love with his songs and his lyrics. Rip to this beautiful soul ♡

As someone who's never been acquainted with E.S.' music, I can't say this doc was particulary good or well executed, as it failed to give me a sense of this mans 'musical greatness'. It felt more of an personal hommage of a somewhat random singer-songwriter from Portland, that had more of an impact on a local group of people, than anything else. Maybe diving a little bit deeper into some of his songs, excerpt of his lyrics etc., would have helped. Anyway, it didn't quite cut it for me.

i was super excited to see this film, as i have loved E.S. for as long as i can remember. Ive listened to EVERY song(a million times), read every book, seen every clip, done all i can to learn all i could about him... Saying all that, i saw the film about 6 months ago, and all i can remember is, helicopter views of Portland, and songs off new moon... Im not saying I didn't like it, i mean, come on, it's Elliott Smith. But it just felt like a virtual hlcptr tour of Prtlnd.

This was a great documentary. If they got anything wrong, it was the decision to use unreleased pieces of music, alternative versions, obscure songs, etc. for the soundtrack. Just use his most famous songs (which are not uncoincidentally also his best songs). Because that is what will draw people in & create new fans: the power of his songs.

Teaser looks good, but the documentary was disappointing to me. Too much random information, not enough in depth-footage. After watching it, I still didn't have a clear image of Elliott Smith's persona and why his music was at times so personal and sad.

Overall I was disappointed ion the documentary. I feel like there's not enough focus on his music itself, the actual albums and the songs in the documentary. And I also feel like they danced around his life too much and didn’t go in depth enough about his life. I don't feel like they really told anything about Elliott that we already didn't know. I feel like I get more info watching youtube interviews and reading his wiki page than watching the doc. The doc felt like a rough overview of Elliott instead of showing us the real Elliott. And they should’ve got other big artist to talk about how they were affected by his music like Sufjan Stevens, Conor Oberst, and Laura Marling. Even Jack Black. I know it was hard to make the doc and they probably couldn’t get all of the interviews they wanted to get but I think it’s important to hear from his mother and his real father (not Charlie, fuck him).

I just saw the film in NYC and feel the need to offer my two cents. First, I love Elliott: he was in my opinion the greatest singer songwriter of my time. I don't think anyone since the Beatles compares with him in the depth and number of great songs. And his guitar playing is crazy and innovative. He was a genius. I respect that the filmmakers loved him too, and he was a daunting subject to tackle. The best part of the film was the cinematography. I've listened to, read and watched everything I can get my hands on and spoke with some who knew him, so maybe I know more than most. But I do not think this film came close to doing him justice. Neil Gust wasn't in it? In the Q&A the director was asked if he thought of interviewing his parents in it; he actually said it never crossed his mind! How do you not put in arguably the most important people in Elliott's life into a documentary on him? The worst part for me was how little good you would have learn about him if you didn't know him before seeing this film. Yes, yes, we all know about about the drugs and the tragic death. For goodness sakes the first ten minutes is about his death! But what did you contribute in terms of us knowing just how prolific a songwriter he was? Very, very little, and that's sad. He had so much material to talk about! What about discussing with artists who loved him just how good he was and why? They has some local Portland people to talk about him saying he was great. But why was he great? Give us some insights. Explain what made him great. Jon Brion offered some ideas and that was good. But there were so many others you could have asked - musicians who could have explained why they admired him. Beck maybe? How about the key changes in Alameda and why it was so unusual? And where the hell was Gus Van Zandt? Why did Gus select of all the people in the world to put a relatively unknown Elliott in his movie? There's actually a great story behind that, but almost no mention of it. They played a lot of parts of his songs in the background, but I don't think the movie played even half of one song. Of course, the movie ends with some lines about the cause of his death being undetermined. But people deserved some insights and thoughtfulexamination as to why he was so great, some incentive for the newly initiated to explore about him. I don't think you are going to get that here. It's fragmented and superficial. One day hopefully someone will delve into the positives of Elliott's life and the great, great music he left us, because there is so much.
