Born '64 here, totally agree. It was a better game when starting pitchers finished what they started. Ferguson Jenkins 30 complete games in 1971 is an example of that. Why were arms healthier back then?

@@EugBaseball because the propeller heads decided pitchers should be used by pitch count. Ferguson! What a pitcher to watch. But that entire era was loaded with fantastic pitching. Vida, Tom Seaver, Gaylord, Nolan etc. the list goes on all night long. The best damn baseball ever.

Grote: not a great hitter by any stretch. BUT, the TOUGHEST DUDE you wouldn't ever want to mess with! From Texas, and actually rode REAL live bulls in the rodeo. Only player Tom Seaver would not challenge or argue with. Total respect. The BACKBONE of the Mets In both 69 and 73 World Series appearances. Mickey Mantle was an all-time great baseball player. But why do people almost impulsively need to attach "glittering generalities" to him, like he represented a better America and embodied class, sportsmanship, etc.? Mickey himself tried to tell young people "Don't live your life like me", that he "wasted" much of his talents with bad behavior.

That is not respect. Man on second with first base open is a no brainer just walk the guy to induce a double play. The real respect is when they walk you under this situations. With first base occupied. With first and second occupied. With bases empty and at last and the most respected one with bases loaded.
