But why do people almost impulsively need to attach "glittering generalities" to him, like he represented a better America and embodied class, sportsmanship, etc.? I know that San Francisco has struggled with the loses of Willie Mays & Orlando Cepeda earlier this year, but This Man was only 31-Years Old and I don’t know of any acknowledgment made by The Giants in the wake of his untimely passing.

That is not respect. Man on second with first base open is a no brainer just walk the guy to induce a double play. The real respect is when they walk you under this situations. With first base occupied. With first and second occupied. With bases empty and at last and the most respected one with bases loaded.
