I think that Rand was affected by Liandrin's "trick" more intensly than an average person because he's a male channeler. A part of the described effects is probably him feeling saidar; just like he shivered back when Moiraine was Healing Tam.

I just started the last book the other day. Listening to Dani talking about Rand-splaining ... second or third read-through

I loved this chapter! A lot of information to take in from the talk between Moiraine and the Amyrlin Seat, and then we get constant switches of perspective, to people associated in some way with the Darkfirends met in the prologue. We get the POV of Bornhold, who will somehow get in contact with 'Bors' (I don't think he's Einor Saren, as he talked about the 'strangers' army, while Bors was instructed not to do so), of one of the Aes Sedai Darkfriends from the prologue, and then Padan Fain, who is being freed by some other Darkfriend. Is it Liandrin? The Shienaran-soldier-Darkfriend? Or the other Aes Sedai-Darkfriend? My money's on Leane, as Padan Fain was looking into the women's chambers, laughing, while visited by Rand. I hope it's not Siuan, that would be too much I think. Also, is Masema the Shienaran-soldier-Darkfriend? Or is it Uno, as he relayed (fabricated?) the orders to Ragan to close the gate? I enjoy the mystery of this chapter very much. After a second read through I don't think Linadrin is a conscious darkfriend. She's crazy, but she dislikes death too much; even the death of a passing day or night. Seems like she's bent on opposing the Dark One with any means necessary, which cannot make her one of the Darkfriend Aes Sedai from the prologue. That Darkfriend is probably the person who gave Liandrin the orders.

I think that the Forsaken knew who they were seeking because they could feel Rand's presence as another male channeler. Also, I love the fact that Rand Traveled just like Lews in the prologue. That confirms he has the highest 'power level' of any Aes Sedai since the Time of Madness, per Moiraine words from one of the early chapters, if the fact that he has channeled through the entire Eye of the World without disintegrating himself was not enough evidence. To also add, I think all the talk about 'having no time' and 'being in time' is connected with the battle at Tarwin's Gap. Especially that Rand arrived just at the end of it and, had he been late, Shieran would fall and the world would be doomed. One small correction: the lone Aiel spearmaiden story was from three years before and the lone man in the stedding was from twenty years before, not the other way around.

Gawyn's character arc is confusing to me.

I can't help but wonder why Thom was in the Two Rivers during Bel Tine, just as Moiraine and Padan Fain, who had clear agendas. And I doubt that it was simply because of the Village Council's efforts to hire a gleeman for celebrations.

Reading this chapter I got reminded of one of Rand's dreams. The one where he's running from Ba'alzamon through a maze of bridges and ramps without railings. Description of that maze was very, very similar to the description of the Ways. It might be a miss, but I thought it's quite interesting.

Contrarianism

I like the question whether Mat should have killed the Darkfriend. I think he should not have, and I can't help but draw a parallel between this scene (this question) and the scene with Raen explaining the Way of the Leaf: how an axe chopping a tree gets damaged. I.e., violence and killing people would have influenced Mat in an evil way. This also correlates with Gode saying that Rand and Mat already "halfway belong" to his master.

As a first time reader, some of the things that I've noticed that werent mentioned in the discussion: (i) Rand counts to 50 before looking into the corridor to check if anyone's there, just like Lan back at the inn in Baerlon (cool tidbit); (ii) Min saw a laughing face while looking at Mat, and he has a weird laughing episode just after the lightning strike; not sure if its related, however there was a description of laughing in the distance back in Shadar Logoth, so all this laughing might be dagger-curse-something-related; (iii) Rand feels weariness while playing the flute - is it channeling sickness? probably not; (iv) from my understanding, Rand does not incur any channeling sickness after the lightning strike, he instead gets thrown to the wall of the room at impact; so nothing to worry about (I guess: yet) in terms of the sickness getting very close to the moment of channeling; (v) it was mentioned indirectly, however Howal's comment that both Rand and Mat are supposed to be Dreadlords suggests that Mat can channel, which I'm still unsure about.

I wish I read book 1 before watching the show😭 I feel like season 1 ruined the channelling aspect of this series. I would have loved to read this book completey blind.

Morgase and Galad have been reunited finally! I am much more happy now I have gotten over the anger of the berelain and galad business in this chapter but we shall see.

Every time people get angry at Gawyn for ignoring egwene needing protection, I think it's important to remember how egwene enters his dreams without his knowledge and therefore consent. I hate how the fandom brushes this off. I don't excuse Gawyn for this behaviour but hers is objectively worse especially since egwene thinks she is ENTITLED to invade people's dreams. This plays a role in how obsessed with her and why he struggles to think straight. What makes it worse is the power imbalance between them. Egwene is incredibly capable, intelligent, and politically dominant, while Gawyn is emotionally raw, deeply insecure, and desperately trying to find his place in the world. Her dreamwalking adds another layer of control, whether intentional or not, which only deepens his fixation on her. It’s manipulative, whether she recognises it or not, and reinforces his dependence on her .

Yeah that battle against the trollocs in the middle of this chapter just highlights how petty the Perrin vs the Whitecloaks and Faille vs Berelain actually is. Miscommunication indeed smh

Okay so the way this chapter ended makes me feel like Berelain is gonna go for Galad, if she sees him BUT SAY IT ISN'T SO? I hope I never have to read and find out that this will be true. This is because my husband, as you can see, is TAKEN by moi. (See my comment under the Knife of dreams prologue, i have officially claimed him. Sorry, Moraine but guh-bye!" As much as I initially liked the. First Lady, she can quietly back off please. I've lost so much respect her over the course of the slog. I will be so mad if that a Galad romance ever happens. It would annoy me even more than it annoys me how Galad STILL hasn't seen Morgase. CAN WE REUNITE MOTHER AND SON ALREADY???
