Join me on the farm as we bring my Granddaddy's John Deere No. 5 sickle bar mower back to life after more than 60 years. In this second installment of the series, I switch gears and use parts from my dad's John Deere No. 5 to repair my granddad's mower. Watch as I extract a rusty mower knife from the bar, assemble a new pitman arm (with flashback footage from last year where I restored and repainted the old pitman arm hardware), and clean the rust from the knife and bar. After greasing up the entire mower and reinstalling the knife, we finally make the first cut with this vintage machine since the late 1950s.
