Still the best coach in BJJ!
Beautiful explanation he made me like the Gracie’s more
Except if you blame a certain group from the middle east that runs the media. You'll be canceled and destroyed.
God was right money is the root of all evil look at our society were are the richest nation ever but we are also the most satanic. Jesus knows all.
Teaching out of the garage was the best time I had because I could teach a hard style of Jiu-Jitsu and not worry about losing students over it. I was also able to be picky on who I allowed to join. Now that I'm teaching back at a commercial location, I have to deal with people who don't want to train hard and I have to listen to some whine. I teach a more combat-based Jiu-Jitsu, so a lot of students dread striking. So, it is definitely a challenge trying to balance it out. I am glad you are doing this because Jiu-Jitsu has become something different from what I learned in the early 90s.
Jiu jitsu warm up and bodyweight workouts came from India.😊
Good video.

How do you get over feeling bad about punching someone in the face in sparring ?i feel hesitant to hit someone hard in the face in sparring, it messes me up because my sparring partners dont mind taking my head off but i just cant match the energy.
Would this work on Bernardo
Is your book well illustrated ?
High levelll instruction / sabe muito
What a gift to bjj fans! Thanks so much Robert!
Jigoro Kano was the first innovator introducing wrestling techniques into Judo
Não tenho envolvimento nenhum com JJ mas fiquei impressionado com a abordagem que o Robert teve com o tema e o ponto de vista histórico. Parabéns pelo trabalho e obrigado por compartilha-lo
this book has been amazing for me , as my gym lineage is with Carlson Gracie and Ricardo Liborio, i was super interested to learn of the origins and allot of stuff makes sense. funny enough my gym is MMA focused, with a root in jitsu, I would go to other gyms and smash some of them with my pressure based game, to learn how true my gym is still in Carlsons vision is amazing to me. thank you for enlightening me
Obrigado velho!!! Muito legal!! 🤙
Love the vid bro. Always lookin for a more technical approach rather then using my inner beast haha
I've got your book coming, Robert. I can't wait to read! You got the clout to write a book like this. Pleasing everyone is impossible, especially regarding these topics. Well done, having a discussion about this.🙂
I hope you know how much your research is appreciated. As a life long martial artist, this type of book is so very rare. Thank you for doing the work here.
This book is the most important book in jiujitsu history. It’s hard to argue against it when he is literally interviewing the people who were there and basically elaborated the same format of questions to each one. Totally impartial.
Great channel.
Jujutsu is commonly understood as the japanese art of fighting without weapons or with short blades. This is a common distance where you can end up while fighting with swords or spears, both in a battle of war or in peacetime in duel or self defense situation. A samurai would have been required to know how to fight, and would have had some education of it. It's like saying, there is no proof that samurai ever practiced sword fighting. You acknowledge that there were many jujutsu schools, but had nothing to do with samurai? Who were the people practicing unarmed combat if not the warrior class of the country? Perry certainly did not establish all these schools and teach Japanese to fight. You can actually trace back the lineages of these schools and see their historical records. The western influence inspired Kano to create a sport that would be compatible with western sports culture and Olympics. Kano did not invent jujutsu, he invented judo. Even the schools that Kano learned and modified into judo have long history and the teachers were part of samurai class. Yes, one of these school has a legend, that one Chinese monk taught some unarmed techniques to the Japanese creators of that school. This is not impossible, as there was constant culture exchange between Japan and the continent, and such ideas are easily passed, as people tend to have quite universal anatomy and follow the same laws of nature. This does not mean, all pre 1868 military schools in Japan that include unarmed techniques have their origins in India. These are quite simple facts to check for yourself, even without speaking Japanese.
Absolutely fantastic. And glad someone has been honest and upfront. As someone who loves BJJ, has a very long history in judo and all round martial art geek. Your saying everything , I have been speaking in whispers for years. Well done
Roberts book represents a seminal body of work on the Jiu Jitsu landscape. He makes very useful distinctions between the myth and the actual. Thanks Robert for your wonderful contribution.
Robert - it should be clear, to anyone who has read your book (books) - that the Jiu Jitsu landscape owes you a debt of gratitude for your most-excellent historical account of the art we all love. Personally, I find you to be completely impartial - a rarity in today's world. Thank you again - for your work - both past and ongoing.
Solid details. Thank you.
The black belt dan system is made up by kano...
The key is, the Gracie's couldn't hang with the throwing and changed everything about the rules to try and win. Being thrown on the ground in real life can certainly end a fight, but not so in a sport context with soft mats etc....
I want to see a debate with you and Rener or Ryron Gracie. They still propagate the official narrative.
Thanks for your work Robert. I'm a bjj blackbelt whos trained with an eclectic group of instructors. The Gracie/Rorion narrative that Helio "invented" jj never made sense. They created a seperation between Helio and his influences and call him an inventor. A full spectrum history like this fits with how sports evolve and with human nature.
Good point
You owned fabio gurghel and his naive nonsense here, the man cannot even argue rationally.
Vc é foda... parabéns pelo livro e pela pesquisa 🙏🏻
Why did he waste his time? Who's buying this book?

Robert, pergunta sincera, o berimbolo e a dela riva tiveram influencia do Kosen ou foram criadas de novo no Brasil por causa da competicao? E o jogo baseado nisso nao desenvolveu no Brasil?
Great details! Thanks profesor! OSS
BJJ rivaling Judo... Mmm... Maybe in America but not the rest of the world... Certainly not Europe or the East
Hey, I signed up for the grip pdf but it doesn’t download. Is there a new link? Thanks, love the content
I wish I found a professor like this when I was younger and training hard what a difference a day makes
Great point re: Kano and promotions, and self-promotion of Judo. You touch on it but classical jujutsu gave licenses, not belts. There was no outside "badge" showing what license someone had, and a license only showed that knowledge had been transmitted (say up to a certain point in the curriculum) not skill. Kano invented the kyu-dan system with black belts, and that was exactly because he saw what he was doing as something different, while a continuation of the old jujutsu traditions. People may not be. aware that Kano gave black belt (dan ranks) to people from other jujutsu systems (ryuha) to get them to join under the Kodokan umbrella - so someone that was teaching Tenjin Shinyo-ryu. or Fusen-ryu (though we probably don't want to open that box up...) one day could be a Kodokan shodan or nidan the next teaching the exact same thing! Gunji Koizumi and Yukio Tani are great examples of that.
The oldest judo school in Europe is the budokwai in London. It was founded in 1918 by Gunji Koizumi and Yukio Tani also taught there. They were both Ju Jitsu teachers and Yukio wrote a number of books on Ju Jitsu. They later became affiliated with Judo at some point after 1920 and agreed to teach the new Judo syllabus. Ju Jitsu was the original art, the difference in Brazil is that the gracies resisted the pressure to amalgamate the system they were taught into the new Judo system. Hence we have Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
And also probably falling in love with the ground, grappling, and the usefulness on the street, and for the smaller guy
Is BJJ Judo, or is Judo Jiu Jitsu?
