Harriet Korman and Gabriel Almeida in conversation
On Thursday, April 7th, Thomas Erben Gallery - in collaboration with Caesura - hosted a conversation between Harriet Korman and critic Gabriel Almeida about her latest body of work, touching on her education, approach to process, and her understanding of the formal dimensions of painting.
About the artist:
Thomas Erben Gallery has been working with Harriet Korman since 2018. Over the past few years, her work has received growing attention, garnering reviews from Roberta Smith for The New York Times, John Yau for Hyperallergic, and Raphael Rubinstein for The Brooklyn Rail, among many others.
This April, Korman will be included in a two-person show at SITE 131 in Dallas. Several of her paintings recently entered the Kienzle Foundation collection, Berlin, and will be part of a group show this May with works by Louise Fishman, Gerald Jackson, Jonathan Lasker, David Reed, Gary Stefan, and Jack Witten. Her work was also included in the 30th anniversary exhibition at Carlier Gebauer this past November, curated by Dieter Schwarz (former director of the Kunstmuseum Winterthur). This interest builds on Korman’s earlier exhibitions with Galerie Rolf Ricke, Cologne (1970, ‘71 and ‘72), Galerie m, Bochum (1977), and Häusler Contemporary, Munich (2015).
In the U.S., Korman has participated in the Whitney Annual (1972), two Whitney Biennials (1973 and 1995), and was included in Ten Young Artists - The Theodoron Awards at the Guggenheim Museum (1971), as well as the traveling exhibition High Times, Hard Times: New York Painting 1967-75 and a three person show at MoMA PS1 (both 2007). Throughout her career, her work has received substantial critical support. She has shown extensively with such galleries as 112 Greene Street, Daniel Weinberg Gallery, Willard Gallery, and Lennon, Weinberg, Inc.
About the critic:
Gabriel Almeida is a writer and critic based in New York. He is one of the principal editors of Caesura and most recently served as a Curatorial Assistant for the 2022 Whitney Biennial. Almeida holds a Masters in Art History from The Graduate Program at Williams College, and previously received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Here's my issue with Sean's rant around 2:00:00. How can I trust you as a critic if you're not someone interested in going to galleries except as a way to incorporate material into your writing that can "militate" against what art has become? Maybe he's just too inbred to the "cooler than thou" NYC persona in that there's nothing that signals your cachet more than lamenting the sad state of Contemporary art.

My suggestion for being a serious critic: write a good, serious, popular book on Koons, Richter or Wall who are the major artists of our time.

He was very patient and saved the interview. I learned alot. This guy is one of my favourite painters and this is like the only video on youtube about him. It was kind of funny though... interviewers were like out to lunch... did they take too many xanax???

Thanks so much to all three of you! That was such an interesting talk. So much food for thought... I really love Charity's paintings and hadn't seen the work of David Park before and it blew me away too. Look forward to tuning into future (and previous) talks. Thanks again🙂

It's a real pleasure to enjoy a specific art so much in an visual context , and then have that augmented so eloquently by an artist who can talk about it almost as good as he can paint it ~ Thanks for this interview!
