Spent several hours there in the 1960's. First-ever jet plane ride was from SFO at night. It was like stepping into a Buck Rogers comic book. Walked through the jetway into the 727, lights blinking, gongs, chimes, noises and then we were off to San Diego. Great memories. Great.

From what little I know, it was relegated to other duties like you said, because it had to be designed with wings short enough to fit through existing hangar doors. This was a big flaw however, as it meant they couldn’t fly as high as later bombers such as the Lanc and were now in danger of being hit by both enemy flak and also from friendly forces bombs from above. They were later moved into other tasks such as glider tugs and Special Ops (e.g. radar jamming by 199 Sqn at RAF North Creake).

I love Duxford . For me it's the best museum and airfield in europe for old aircraft . And you never ever know what's going to turn up on the day from spitfires ,mustang's to Hercules aircraft . And not far from Duxford you could pop into old warden and the Shuttleworth collection near Biggleswade . We are but blessed with aviation history in this country. Cant wait for it to get back to normal .
