    I have used a Cumulus quilt for about 6 years. One of the first things I did was to throw away the straps and I never use the neck tightener. I use it like I use my quilt at home, and if I feel a bit cold, I just use my hands to tuck the quilt under me and around my neck. It works for me because I don't move around at night, I tend to sleep like a horizontal sentry.

      I haven't used it below 10° C yet. So far I just used it like a blanket as well, no draft collar or pad straps needed. It worked even though I tend to toss and turn a bit.

    Pad attachment system looks promising at blocking drafts. Have you tested it outside yet?

      Not really, the temps were not low enough to warrant using the straps.

    I tried this with the kakwa 40 but found out the buckles are not the same, thanks for the inspiration though!

    • @rudiebln
      @rudiebln 25 днів тому

      I like the old buckles better. The spider buckles are quite flimsy. My V-strap buckle broke during the flight. Thanks to my MYOG side compression I could still use the pack without the V-strap, but it was quite a bummer to start the trail with a defective pack.

      Hängt vom Wind ab. Ansonsten wackelt es nicht stark, wenn du es richtig fest ziehst.

    Nice THe big question is how well those loops will hold over time and under tension

    • @rudiebln
      @rudiebln 2 місяці тому

      You mean the small grosgrain loops that Durston uses as attachment points? Worked fine on my recent back to back tour of Peaks of the Balkans and Tour du Mont Blanc. I always used the top to side compression as the V-strap buckle broke during the flight.

    Superior Wilderness Designs has some clip on side straps and clip on top Y straps of various sizes for some backpack brands. I grabbed some Y straps for my ULA packs. LiteAF also has some clip on side straps to add to their packs. Mainly just gotta check the strap width and like you said, find a mating buckle and all is golden.

  • @LoganBertling
    @LoganBertling 5 місяців тому

    I like this idea, I also have a Kakwa 55 and might try this out myself. A few questions: 1. Where did you get the cords & cord stoppers? 2. Is there a certain technique/type of knot you used to tie the knot at the cord stopper? 3. How long did you make each of your loops? 4. Does your loop at the bottom use the 2mm dyneema or the 3mm elastic? Thanks!

    • @rudiebln
      @rudiebln 5 місяців тому

      1. You'll get them at ever DIY store like extremtextil, ripstop by the roll or adventurexpert. You'll find a list at learnmyog. 2. Just a normal knot. 3. I went by eye. Large enough to get the poles through without a hassle. Just try it out before tying it off and test what feels comfortable. 4. I use Dyneema. Others use elastic and cover it with a piece of clear PVC pipe like on Osprey packs.

      You're welcome. My old Osprey pack had the stow-on-the-go in a more fancy way and it was one of my favorite features. So easy to DIY and it weighs next to nothing.

  • @MattCorkum
    @MattCorkum 6 місяців тому

    Thank you! This is one of my favourite features of my Osprey packs, and my Durston is on the way. So I will definitely be adding this. I wonder if it is possible to source the clear rubber that osprey puts around the cord for durability? That would be a cool addition!

    • @rudiebln
      @rudiebln 6 місяців тому

      Glad you like it. You can find the clear rubber pipes at DIY stores in the aquaristics section. I don't think you need them, though. Dyneema is plenty tough. The Kakwa's attachment loops are better suited to make a bottom loop like I did instead of doing it the Osprey way between two attachment points. The bottom attachment loops at the front pocket are too high and too far away from the bottom back attachment loops IMO.
