Key Spikes. What are they? How do you make them? How do you use them?

Key Spikes. What are they? How do you make them? How do you use them?
Can you load drum samples and play with keys to pitch hi hat or kicks ?
In the thumbnail, what do you mean by "How Does Decent Sampler"?
How does the copy operation treat sparse files?
To be completely honest I am not sure. I've not tried it with a whole lot other than sample libraries and a hand full of others like the Logic content folder. I do know however that it does not work on my plugins folder. I can move it, but nothing can find them after I do.
Is it possible to create a dynamic ranger velocity knob for keys?
I don't know for sure, It's not something I've tried, But my instinct is to say yes. I also know a couple features have been added since any of my most recent vids on it. If I have some time, I may give that a try later.
@@TrueNorthAudio ok ,thanks, i can update the informativo for us.
❤❤❤❤❤
life saver! thank you. <3
With updates down the line, decent sampler will likely become my fav due to being able to run the presets on IOS also.. But for convenience and features right now I think I like Grace sampler for creating my own patches.
I've heard that Grace is pretty cool, though I've also heard that it's limited in the number of samples you can actually run. Which will usually not be an issue, but I Personally like to build big and deep instruments.
Great video, thanks. But: the background music is soooo annoying and distracting. Please remove the music. THX
is there a way to do artificial legato?
Yeah, There is a glide mode that you can add to the groups section that will do different types of glides/proto/legato.
is that script on the developer resources page?
@@awndermusic Yes, Though I've not had a chance to mess with it yet, so I'm not sure off the top of my head how good it is. Though I'm sure that a lot of the tonal instruments you can find for it will include it as well, so you can look ash their scripts and study how they are implemented.
This clears up some questions. Thanks for making it! 🎸
Thank you for watching, Glad it was helpful
thanks for the info.
Cheers, Thanks for the comment. I'm hoping to get more in depth with DS in later videos.
the control-shift tip for Sublime text was life changing. Thanks to your video and David's I was able to build my first instrument from scratch in 2 nights including a custom UI. @@TrueNorthAudio
I'm looking forward to the editor within Decent Sampler being further developed in the future. Dragging a bunch of key-labelled samples into it and letting DS automatically maps them would be a huge timesaver.
Absolutely, I feel like DS is on it's way to being something more awesome every day.
@@TrueNorthAudio True. I think Dave Hilowitz is eally persistent when it comes to developing this platform further!
I'm getting into coding, and shockingly, this plugin offers a lot of ease to developing your own sample library. It may not be as amazing as creating your own audio applications, but it def could be a starting point to a portfolio
It's simple, but shockingly robust. I'm happy that it's as accessible as it is for those without programming knowledge or experience.
Can you comment on CPU usage? I run NOIRE on Kontakt Player on a Core i5/16GB RAM and it chokes if I use the sustain pedal too much. Which I need to when I play live. Would Decent Sampler be lighter for this kind of usage? Plenty of pianos to choose from too. Thanks!
I've not used a sustain pedal with it, so that specifically I can not confirm anything on, However DS is very light as software goes and pretty well optimised. Kontakt is built on a very old framework and sort of kept updated to preserve backwards compatibility, making it pretty bloated and slow. Kontakt is great, but it does have its drawbacks, and in my experience and understanding, It can be slow and clunky at time. on the other hand, It is free, so there is nothing lost giving a try and seeing how it serves you.
Website won't let me buy it 😢
Hey, I just ran a test purchase to see if I ran into any issues and had no problem with it, Where is the hangup happening for you? Walk me through what's going on and I can try and diagnose an issue.
it wouldn’t even let me add it to my cart but I just now tried it again it’s working thank you so much!
@@Trazodonemusic Glad to see it worked. Because of how the backend works with my web host you will get a file for the download offsite, Enjoy.
i tried this but the mono channels still as stereo in Logic pro, i tried but i seems to get good results as Nolly does it just multi uot as usual, i dunno, i didnt quite work , but to be fair i dont think i did it right
I don't know off the top of my head what the issue may be, but I'm sure with a little playing it may reveal itself, Good luck, And it's always worth a try at least.
Wow really awesome sound! For 20$ it's a steal !! I buy !!
Cheers, Appreciate the support.
Thanks for sharing this! It definitely cleared some things up for me. Very helpful!
Glad to hear, Happy sampling.
Just get to the point brah I don’t have time for u to explain every detail
Fun idea! Just a thought, if you were setting the oscillators to absolute frequencies, to get the frequencies of a higher octave you can double all the values of a lower octave if you have that at hand. In equal temp the octave is still pure.
Okay Wendy Carlos 🎉❤😮
Thanks! Really helped me understand what decent sampler is and the history!
thanks now I'm freed from buying an actual keg 👍🏻
Cheers, Enjoy.
Great stuff! Gonna be coming back to this one 🙂
Cheers, Glad to hear.
🎉❤😂
Learned a lot from watching this but I am only able to get the first instance of Kontakt working the way you set it up. When I try to do the second I am not able to have the outputs from overheads etc to appear as two mono tracks in logic. Wish you did not speed up that second half, lol
Hey, Sorry about that, First detail that may make a difference is that both instances of Kontakt are set up to be 25 mono multi output instruments, so when I do the overheads, they output to a stereo output in Kontakt, But in Logic that will become 2 mono outputs. So let's say we just have a mono overhead and a stereo one, and that's what we want to send out. In Kontakt I create the outputs the same as I do normally, With the first channel being a mono channel set to channel 1, and the second output being a stereo track like they are be default and have that set to channels 2 and 3. And so when I assign the stereo overhead in Kontakt it will read that as St. 2 and come out as 3 mono tracks in the Logic project. I may make a video going into the outputs a bit more in depth soon as well.
@@TrueNorthAudio thx for the thorough answer. I will try this out. I kind of made it work but with overheads being stereo. Tried your way to group tracks and it made it so much fun and the workflow is great.
@@vitriol6666 Cheers, I've been looking for a quick video to do and may actually knock out routing in Kontakt tonight to put out tomorrow and experiment with a couple other methods of breaking out the tracks as well. Glad this has been helpful.
@@vitriol6666 Just dropping in to let you know that I did a more in depth video on Kontakt routing that has just dropped.
Good job guys! Really really thankful for this🙌🏼
Cheers, Appreciate it.
Thanks a for the video. Unfortunately the background music is totally disturbing and annoying, especially when you demonstrate your instrument. I have no clue why people are using background music in such videos… or any tutorials at all.
Please turn down the background music in this very helpful video, I still did not get through it so far because of the distraction. But please go on sharing your experiences! Thank you
Hear hear! I can't stand background music in videos I immediately change it
Thank you for this. Background piano is a bit high imo.
Cheers, And thank you for the feedback.
If you wanna be exact there's a little math you can do for the end sample nr. Say your samples are 1 beat long in your DAW, that's 60/bpm , then just multiply that by whatever your samplerate is so if it's 48khz you do 48k*0.5 (example for 1 beat at 120bpm) and your sample lenght is 24k so the end time for the full file would be 24000. Again that's (60/bpm)*samplerate If a sample is longer than 1 beat just do bpm/beats per sample so a generic formula would be (60/(bpm/beats per sample))*samplerate
I really liked the section on Additive. Food for thought!
It seems Additive is the favourite part, Certainly going to be diving much more in depth with this style.
Very nice! Easy to follow and you made a great job explaining the details! Keep up the good work
Cheers mate, Thanks for watching.
What, No Karplus Strong? (Just kidding.) Great video! Well done, and highly informative.🎉
I feel like that would be a fun one to explore in it's own video for sure. Cheers, Appreciate the comment.
Please, and this is a request for anyone and everybody explaining anything on any subject ever: do not say that " it is easy". You have no idea who you are talking to.
Great video, thanks so much. David is amazing as he continues to bring more possibilities to Decent Sampler.
Cheers. He absolutely is, And would you look at that, just hours after this goes up, Buttons.
@@TrueNorthAudio Whaaaat!?!?!?!?!?
@@PraiseTracks I'd love to claim responsibility for that lol, But Dave is just on top of it.
Working on a duality cover and needed some kegs... Testing out the Lite Keg! Thanks 🤘
Can't wait to hear, Used them in a Duality cover just a few weeks ago and was very pleased how well they came out.
Does it read my midi pedal input? All instrument patches i tried dont work with the sustain pedal. Only the claustrophobic piano gives a pedal release sound when i use it, but no longer sustained notes what so ever. Can anyone help?
I'm not certain if what you are experiencing is a glitch, limitation or programming issue. I do know it can be written in, but I'm not sure on how advanced that kind of voicing can be made so far as all of my builds are percussion based so far and do not use it. This would be a question for the Decent Sampler Help channel in the Pianobook Discord or possibly reach out to Dave Hilowitz on. The Discord help thread is very handy though.
@@TrueNorthAudio I'll give that a try, thnx for the tips!
How can you make your own instrument?
I assume that you are asking how would you make one of these instruments, If so, I do plan on making a video soon on how I do it in DecentSampler. In short, Plan the samples and how you want to voice them, I personally use Kontakt as a developer tool as Decent Sampler has a mapping editor, But it's not functional yet, and once that is set I use the manual and videos Dave has, as well as some templates I've made to create the basic interface. DS is still a bit more script heavy, But it's still simple and well laid out. The only major issue being the current lack of a free developer tool unless you can make .EXS files in tx16ws. Otherwise with high sample counts like the keg we just made, or things like the tongue drum, It would be prohibitively tedious to have to write out the path for everything manually.
I just want to tell you that your drum kit is incredible. I've been struggling with making organic beats in FL. This kit helped me figure it out. Well done! Do you have any videos that help explain how to make the XML file that powers the sampler?
Thank you, I'm very glad it has been helpful to you. I assume You are referring to the .dspreset file that DS uses to find and voice the samples. I do not have one currently, Though it is actually one I intend to make, I actually have a script that I use in Creator Tools to convert it from a Kontakt instrument and then voice as needed, However, Dave Hilowitz has several and a conveniently simple user manual. ua-cam.com/video/UxPRmD_RNCY/v-deo.html www.decentsamples.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/format-documentation.html Hope these are helpful, I'll hopefully have one or two of my own up soon.
Why i can't see Kt. st. 3 and up? It Shows me kt.st1, 2 and then it's kt surr. 5.1 and then other aux and unassigned choices
oh wow that's very nice, have to restart kontakt each time you change output routing config...
Sorry for the short delay in replying, I wanted to open Kontakt standalone and see what results I got. If you are outside of a DAW it seems that it assigns outputs based on your audio device, my TASCAM is 8 channels out, so in standalone I only have the 8, If it is in Logic, it will depend on the output settings of the plugin when you have inserted it, I chose 25 mono in this case, Though Kontakt itself has a maximum of 16 channels in it's engine. If it is in a multi out setting already, than I am not entirely sure as to the answer, it may be something worth asking a Logic or Native Instruments community, or even a composer's community, as it may be a thing I've not personally run across. Unfortunately I do not know for other DAWs, but whatever that DAW's version of a multi output plugin assignment will likely be required to tell Kontakt how many channels it has to work with.
Thx Dude! nicely explained and good vibes all around 🤟👍🏻🥁 key spikes on drums - first I though some hardware replacements 😂 cheers
Cheers, And thank you
Thanks for the video, I'm a blind windows user with some very limited sight but mostly depend on screen reader although can sometimes use high magnification. I'm currently working on a project using web tech with Reasons Remote sdk to give voice feedback of the reason daw. The idea is a little like NI Komplete Kontrol voice assist but designed to work with the Reason DAW, using their MIDI Remote sdk with a web browser and virtual MIDI cables. I've done some proof of concepts but am still flushing out some of the finer points. I'm hoping to write a web app, that can work with any standard MIDI controller and the Reason DAW. It won't give full access to Reason but will greatly improve things. As an example a smaller app I wrote, gives computer keyboard control of the redrum virtual drum machine in reason, one of its very first devices. This app also gives voice feedback of parameters as you use it. There's a short video on my channel showing me use it. All the best, John
Cheers, Sounds like a lot of progress, Hope it all comes together smoothly. Myself and a couple others have been in the Pianobook community and have put accessibility on the mind for the development of DecentSampler as well, While I can't speak to any changes now or going forward, The hope is that it will be a consideration that can make it easier to use for everyone.
@@TrueNorthAudio thanks, sounds good, I hear NI are currently working on access for maschine mk3 but haven't any specifics on how its going.
@@johnsexton8082 Hopefully well, Guess we will find out soon enough.
Hey man! Thanks for the video. Wanted to ask if there’s any way we can organise the sample library. I can’t find a way to put all the choir samples under one choir folder or the same with pads. Would be great if you could help out with this. Really appreciate the efforts. Thanks :)
If I understand your question correctly, What I've personally been doing is organising things manually in my DS Instrument folder. As features go, Dave, The creator of Decent Sampler, And many others, Are quite active in the Pianobook community Discord and both take suggestions and offer good community insight. Decent Sampler is very much an in progress program and has actually changed a ton even since making this video.

I suspect the wait won't be long, I'm very excited about V2, Been playing with alot of the new features and there is a reason Phaseplant is a favourite.
How did you get the black skin ?
I think I got this one from the Discord community, A lot of people sharing cool skins in there, It's called Black Metal Ice.
@@TrueNorthAudio thanks I found a gray serum one I like
I wonder what kind of antialiasing is used
I used the iOS version on iPad and it wasn’t very good. I need to give it another try but it was a disaster the last time I used it
I've not used the iOS version personally, the Pianobook discord however is a great place to look for help and advice on it, the creator is fairly active there.
I started the process of downloading Decent Sampler to add to Ableton Live on my Windows PC. Unfortunately I received a prompt that said "Do Not Run, Program Unfamiliar, May Harm My PC". Is there any info out there on corrupted downloads for Decent Sampler? Or do you think this is a false positive? Any help is much appreciated.
I don't personally know the answer, but the Pianobook discord server is a great place to ask, the creator is pretty active there. Judging by context I assume it's a safety measure on windows that is trying to tell you that it's not made by a verified developer. It may just require a security override to say, yes, this software is safe. It is a small one man project for the most part, so it does not have all the extra licensing behind it that you would get with a major brand. But I'd start in the Pianobook discord, I imagine someone there would have the exact answer.
@@TrueNorthAudio Thanks for the response. I sent them a message. I hadn't heard back and decided to override the prompt. Everything is working just fine. I guess it simply did not recognize the software and was being cautious. In any event, I'm now exploring the creativity of this community. My favorite thing besides some of the instruments is to read the back stories. It's the very least I can do for all these free tools.
@@djReason19 Glad to hear, There is so much talent in the community, it is very inspiring.
