Restoration and repair of primarily 80-90s Volkswagen cars with an occasional odd car or motorcycle thrown in.
48 Hour Crunch Before the Techtonics Picnic!
Techtonics Tuning announced their first annual open house and picnic, and I looked around at all my VWs and only one was currently running, so I decided (I did have like 3 months advanced notice) 48 hours before the event that the 1992 Volkswagen Cabriolet needed a complete suspension makeover. Let's take apart a running car!
Koni STR struts (let the flame war begin), H&R Springs and Febi/TRW/misc. other parts were used. Two things I didn't get to because of some self-induced complications as seen in the video were the rear beam bushings and the rear swaybar bushings, So I will do those in a future video rebuild of the rear beam.
And I will have to revisit this car in the future to do those plus the wheel bearings, hubs and maybe put the brake backing plate back on. I'll do that when the car gets painted this Spring.
Techtonics Tuning presented an amazing event, even with the 100 degree weather! Next year we will be in the show section, with the Cabbie for her, and maybe something for me!

1966 VW Beetle Restoration: Building a Body Jig
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Рік тому
After a bit of a delay, we are back with some progress on the '66 VW Beetle. In the last video the body came off and we started looking at getting the body in shape for paint. We put the car on my RedLine chassis cart, however I didn't like the way it was sitting so this episode we build a jig for the body that fits the RedLine dolly so the car is still mobile. Awesome music from Elvin Vanguard...

Yet another restoration project - a 1966 Volkswagen Beetle! In this video, I start the tear down process, assessing the areas that need attention and prepping the body for panel repair and paint. This Bug came as a rolling chassis, however I already picked up a correct 1300cc engine that runs! Will be resealing the engine at least. We'll also be replacing the suspension, brakes, steering and gi...

I’m in the middle of doing heater channels, floor pans and parts of the bottom luggage area. 😮. I really like how you’re showing all of the dismantling. Most videos just show installation. Thank you
awesome looking dog!
I have five dogs so I had to rewatch it to see which one! That’s Zoey Belle. Named after the actress/stunt woman from Death Proof. She is the alpha in our pack even over our Belgian Malinois mix and our Masitiff/Dane mix
I'd like to see it with the doors hung.
Me too. Got sidelined from cancer repair on this thing for a little cancer repair on myself. Put me out of the game for a year. Will be back to it here real soon. Thanks!
That trans mount needs replacement too. Since you have a lift, I’d change it too.
For sure. I am doing a 2H/ABA swap I. It right now as well as paint. Will pretty much be new here shortly!
@@thebeardsgarage I look forward to seeing what you’re doing. I have three 80’s Sciroccos. Two ‘S’ models, in really good condition in Mars red. The other one I’m working on Cis injection issues. The third a 1980, is on the back burner for now. I’m thinking to buy a 1984 two door Rabbit in pretty good condition. A one owner car. It’s an automatic, so I’ll need to convert it to a manual. I have an extra 1.8 ph motor and close ratio 5 spd trans I can put in it. I’m 68 years old and getting harder to do all the work myself. But I’ll try. 👍🏻👍🏻
@andrerodriguez7603 thanks, I’m 51 and just went through throat cancer surgery/treatment, but it inspired me to say fuck it, build a new shop and make some cool cars. So that’s why I’ve been away here for a bit. So lots more coming soon!
Man they were in great condition compared to my 69. The bottom of the door pillars don't exist and the sill/heater tube is just as bad. Enjoy.
I struggled with doing them or not. But figured it was torn down that far already so why not?
Nice work!! I have to do this job next winter to my 65. For the big gaps I use the coat hanger trick. Sometimes fold it up a couple times then jam it into the gap and hit it with the welder. A real welder might be mad at this comment 😅
87’ cabby
We will be bringing the 92 Cabbie again and hopefully the 84 Gti!
Appreciate it just did clutch and flywheel and really helps having a video of someone installing everything from there kit after taking everything apart
Thanks. I wish I’d been a little more detailed but I will have a few more videos coming up on the Cabbie, new motor, paint etc
@@thebeardsgarage yeah currently running into issues w the shifter being stiff I’m wondering if it’s because the linkage piece with the pinch bolt and clamp I think isn’t centered like yours I’m going to make it straight retighten then adjust the linkage and see if I can get all my gears smoothly glad I could reference the starting point to see
@E_ina_G if it’s hard to get into 1st and 2nd you just have to take out the splined shaft at the front and turn it a tooth or two until you get that 15mm between the shifter and the metal tab at rest. I was surprised what a difference one or two teeth made. There is a process for adjusting the actual plate inside the car as well, I can’t remember what that was though. I started there and then went under the car
Great video showing all the work you accomplished in such a short time! I’ll be needing to do a full suspension rebuild on our 92 VW Cabriolet soon too! If you could share a complete parts list, that would be very helpful! Thank you!!! Dean Bradenton Florida
Absolutely. It really wasn’t even that expensive. Rough estimate it was less than $700 with the Konis. And I think maybe $900 with the H&Rs. The Konis are a tad soft in the rear but it’s lowered. (But don’t tell her!) It rides quite nice.
Parts list added to the video description!
Nice Video, You should like a droid
Yeah I do lol. That’s why all my other videos aren’t voiced. I have nerve damage in my neck from throat cancer surgery last November so it’s hard to talk with a lot of inflection. But thanks for watching!
Beautiful paint job. I am buying an inflatable paint booth and plan on doing the same next spring to my 94 miata. I'll definitely be watching this again for insperation when it's time to paint. Thank you for sharing this and putting a huge smile on your moms face.
Thank you. I’ll have a video up maybe tomorrow showing the paint three years later and how it’s held up. Nothing quite as fun as painting cars!
Great series of videos. And I love the Music.
Thank you. Will be getting some more up soon!
Love the back ground music. I found myself tapping my feet the whole time I was watching your awesome work. Watching this all the way down in New Zealand. Great work, love it.
Thank you, will be getting new vids up soon
W❤W! That’s Incredibly Cool! 🤗❤️✨
Which VW project is more... enjoyable, simpler... the Beetle or the Rabbit? Glad I found your channel. How is your finger healing?
I’m finding the Beetle to be more fun as I’ve never had one before so it’s neat to learn. But the Rabbit is more my style! I get to keep the finger. Turns out there’s a safety guard in the box that the boss says I have to put on now :(
Very cool video!!
Oh man .that is a seriously major job to replace the channels .... If it has to be done , it has to be done ... Nice dogs
Yeah that’s why I’m hesitating. I think it needs to be done though. I’d love to get all the dogs in one shot but that’s virtually impossible! Thanks for watching
Kool idea on lifting the body off…. I’m gonna do that thanks
Just try to get the car centered a little more so it comes off more level!
Keep it going.
Wolfsburg West !
Let’s see more!
Tonight!
Love the car. I'm building my Mazda.
Awesome! Will be starting a series of videos on this car, I owned it from new and we are doing a total refresh on it!
Heh there - I have the exact same model and color car - 92 Cab with sticky shifting - problems with 1st gear esp. I see a Wash. state plate. I am in Port Townsend. Maybe I can drive to you? Are you in Kitsap County? Looks like Puget Sound trees in yr. video.
Hi there, I’m actually in Beavercreek, Oregon. Bought the car in Ridgefield, Washington. Would definitely adjust it for you though!
❤😂🎉😢😮😅😊❤😂🎉😢
Nice one, well done. I'd never have thought of lifting the body that way! The frame you have holding the body looks really funky, a really simple design. You may get lucky, but I fear you'll find you have to do a lot of work on the bottom of the A pillars etc, just where the body is resting on that frame. Same at the rear. I recently saw a really good rotisserie design, for holding a bug body and rotating it to work on - on Callahan's Garage here on YT. He explains how to build it. If you do a lot of bugs you might decide to build one. Just FYI 🙂 Good luck anyway mate, I'll be watching, here in UK. Julian.
I saw another UA-camr use the strap method, I forgot his name. It worked pretty well but the car wasn’t centered under the lift so it did come off crooked. I’m not sure I’d use this method again. Maybe with different straps. This body dolly is from Redline Automotive and it’s pretty good, I follow Callahan and agree that his design is great. It’s almost a jig as well for the heater channels, which yes, as you’ll see in the next video may need a little attention. But so far I’m pretty lucky with this chassis! Thanks for watching!
@@thebeardsgarage Awesome work! Can you share a link of the body dolly? Thank you!
@@marcosgomez7771 I think that’s a Redline. But I made an actual jig that sits on top of the Redline dolly to fit the Beetle body. Check out my other video of making that part
Awesome video.
Thanks! Was a little worrisome when the body came off crooked!

Any videos coming soon for the 66 beetle?
Yes I should have one or two out this weekend!
Beard, I just picked up a 1966 Bahama Blue Beetle that is 99% complete, straight, and original here in Northern California. It's an original California car, but it has been sitting outdoors for over 30 years. There is rust rot on the passenger lower door pillar and rear bumper brackets. Floor pans and possibly heater channels will need to be replaced. I was considering selling as I was feeling that the restoration might be over my head, but you may have just inspired me to tackle this project.
That’s awesome! And a great color. I’m lucky with this car, it’s pretty solid for sitting in a backyard here in Oregon for years. I’ll be doing the lower quarter panel this week and getting the body off as soon as I get my Rabbit out of the way! It’s a great car to learn on and there’s plenty of parts out there!
Should I narrate my videos?
Yes. Your doing some really cool stuff but I personally think it would be awesome if you narrated what you were doing and included any setbacks or challenges you had on some of the things your doing.
Make it look easy removing the doors
Because the screws came out without much of a fight? I got lucky
Really, really nice looking video! I am confused that a man who has a lift in his garage does not own a impact screwdriver. I know what I am getting you for your Birthday. Keep making these great looking videos!
Haha! Yeah well uh, no excuses… I have one now! Thank you!
Love the music as well! This car looks very complete. I suggest refurbishing as many of the original parts as possible. Good quality replacement parts are difficult to come by, not to mention at all. When doing the floor pans I recommend going with the original 18 gauge steel. A great source for parts and most especially rubber and plastic trim is west coast metric in California.
Watching what some of the other guys on YT are going through with theirs makes me feel lucky for sure! Luckily there isn’t a lot of metal to replace on this one
great video those VW are great to work on nice project for you finally some good music too
Thank you. It’s my first air cooled VW but I love the simplicity. Should get another video out this week!
Beard, your channel is worth subscribing to just for the music! Enjoying the tear down so far!
Thanks! Hard to find music that isn’t you usual social media electronica! Some of my older vids have that but my son was editing them. I’ll have more up here soon, so much snow in the Northwest!
@@thebeardsgarage Gotta love that rockabilly. I'll enjoy following your adventure.
@@medicocreguitarist4206 Wish I could share more rockabilly from the early 50’s and 60’s, but copyright and all that. All those bands need to be heard and appreciated! I grew up on The Cramps in the 80’s and they took me way back!
@@thebeardsgarage Brian Setzer and the Stray Cats at the New Sooner Theater in 1982. That was my rockabilly start! Whenever I want to speed up my picking hand I turn to rockabilly or surf music. It goes great with working in the garage too.
Nice work dude ! Actually starting restoration on mine in France, i'll definitely stay updated on your project. Nice editing by the way
Thanks. Hopefully will get wrapped up with taking it apart this weekend and will get the body off and start a bit of rust repair!
very nice
A car is a sweet gift but a ring and a car would of been icing on the cake!
Haha, she knows a VW is a lifelong commitment! Stay tuned, will be doing a complete restoration (with upgrades) over the next couple of months!
Hey I replaced my bushings, Techtonics kit, also installed the short shifter and weighted rod. Had to replace the black boot underneath as mine was destroyed. Now all done, it feels really stiff forward and aft. Added grease at all the right spots during the install…I cut the accordion on the boot, the hole for the long rod that runs underneath, still stiff. Wasn’t stiff before I installed everything.
Make sure the shifter baseplate inside the car is adjusted correctly. You may be getting some bind in there. Is the reverse lockout working correctly?
Yeah it works. It’s just stiff back and forth.
I found out that it’s the bracket up front the the long rod goes thru, the pre-installed bushing is too tight, going to sand it a lil, when I removed the bracket, every was nice and easy, found the culprit 👍🏻👍🏻
Exactly what is needed for my transmission. I do need a new throwout bearing so I'll be doing the pressure plate as well. Hoping the flywheel is fine. Don't look forward to removing the engine.
At least the parts on these things is reasonable! Getting ready to stop this one down for paint, planning on dropping motor and trans out the bottom in on piece!
Love auto cross!!
Best surprise ever! I sure appreciate all the hard work you put into this. It turned out great!
What a fun project! Love the color. Can’t wait to watch this come along.
Very nice thank you very much from where I could buy the the rebuild kit
Thanks! Everything came from Techtonics Tuning in Oregon
Nice car. It’s rare to see a Mazdaspeed protege around.
Definitely fewer and fewer around these days for sure!
Love this!! What a cute car, I remember them well. She sure looks happy about it. Smiles ear to ear! Happy Anniversary you all!!
This was awesome!! Was it a much fun as it looked!? Thanks for not showing us the masking part LOL. You're mom is so sweet, she was so thankful and shocked! Good job!
Oh I love painting. It’s all the bodywork up to that point that sucks!
@@thebeardsgarage hahaha I bet.
