    That was great i love seeing these early draft and script ideas that movies go through Edwards is really interesting stil hope the first draft ever becomes available mostly for the supposed scenes where the inventor had a bigger role role play. Edward being more talkative is interesting and I agree the change to make him less talky was good but I think the original idea could have worked it he gradually started talking more showing that he is starting to learn how to communicate more. The one line Jim said about Kim's heart being pierced I wonder if that was also ment to foreshadow how he dies later but just speculating the deleted hospital scene is a interesting Pay off that makes it even more bittersweet and the nurse being rude definitely fits with the ugliness of the world starting to creep in with also the paparazzi I also get vibes of the hospital scene from pee wees big adventure. The line I hope you're happy definitely would have made a powerful moment. Definitely a great video.

    In a well-made Columbo episode, the true main character of the story is the killer, as they set out to commit the perfect murder. Columbo is the force of justice who enters into the story, never letting up on them, to demonstrate that they can’t actually get away with it.

    I absolutely love this essay! Someone finally gets it! I saw a video a few years ago where someone said that Tom Hulce sounded awkward and not that great when singing, and I couldn’t even think how this person didn’t get that, even if it was true (it’s not), it lends to how the character feels! Quasimodo doesn’t really get to voice his ideas or feelings to anyone but stone figures, but when he does, it is loud and begging. In truth, while Rapunzel could understand him just as well (especially with her only desire to be to see lanterns), I think you miss out on another princess who would understand Quasi a bit more: Cinderella. Sure, she CAN go out into society, but given how she is dressed and perceived (as well as how far her home is away from the town itself), Cinderella has almost the same plight as Quasimodo. Quasi technically has the power and ability go out, but because of an older adult who has been caring for him for all his life, he feels powerless. Cinderella (again, while still conventionally attractive) has the power to make a dress, grab some shoes, do hair and make up, and walk herself to the ball (a ball she only wants to attend, with no intention of snagging a prince). It’s only when Lady Tremaine and her stepsisters take away that ability (not just by cruel words but in fact physically destroying her dress) that Cinderella loses that power.

      Thank you so much for your kind words! To me, he does sound kind of nervous when he's singing (probably because he was!) but like you said, that's not a bad thing and it makes sense for the character too. But like I said, regardless of flaws I love this song and his voice so much ❤️ You made some great points about Cinderella. To be honest it's been so long since I last saw that one I forgot about the similarities they share. Thank you for watching!

    This documentary should've devoted at least 5 minutes to the true story that inspired it, mentioned on the Wikipedia article on the movie. Otherwise, a fine effort. I saw the film when it came out, and recently saw it again on UA-cam. A great spooky movie.

    Great video! If you haven't already you gotta check out the 2016 stage adaptation. It's based on the Disney film and has the same amazing score but it incorporates elements from the original book and it's more dark/adult. I do like the movie a lot but the tonal inconsistencies bring it down a bit for me, that being said it's wild that someone looked at the original story and said "let's turn this into an animated Disney movie" and its still as good as it is lmao

    • @linkfan160
      @linkfan160 2 місяці тому

      Thank you for watching! Yes I have seen the Musical adaptation as well. I love it too but for me despite the tonal inconsistencies, the Disney version is more nostalgic and dearer to my heart, but I love both versions for sure.

    nice work. congrats, the algorithm pushed your video onto my feed. keep it up and "catch" those subs! I'd say your first point of improvement needed is a quality microphone, that will sound so much better and boost your production value/ first impressions of quality. keep going, your script, editing, and overall work is very good and I think you'll get a boom of new viewers soon if you follow this up quickly with another video.

    Wow, I have to say that your video essays have SIGNIFICANTLY improved over the last few years. Long gone are the days where you used to hold a camera up to your computer screen to capture footage. Now you're using crystal clear video and music files from a variety of different sources to get your point across, as well as some masterful editing. I guess what I'm trying to say is that this was extremely well done and I loved every second of it. You made some really excellent points that I had never even thought about before. I'm honestly kind of shocked you were able to play as much of the song as you did considering Disney's stinginess lol Awesome work, my cinema twin! :)

    Imagine if you had a supernatural detective character who would enter the world from a sort of limbo to pose as a cop in our world, but was only able to intervene under very special circumstances to expose killers when he knew how to bring the evidence to light, so as not to reveal his true nature, a Columbo that actually was from nowhere.

  • @arthurgodwin6571
    @arthurgodwin6571 2 місяці тому

    A note on Columbo's angry moments, he gets angriest when a life is or has been put at risk. When he's figured out who the killer is he knows that if he's patient and keeps a clear head, he will catch them. But I think that in cases like when Dr. Mayfield was openly mocking him while Columbo knew he was plotting another murder, or when Milo Janus was leading the victim's wife to overdosing, what really set him off was the active disregard for human life, something Columbo as a cop swore to protect.

    I think Columbo is completely facade. We don't know for sure anything about him. Every time he refers to his wife or brother-in-law, it's always in service of solving the crime. Every time he is kind or angry or clever or obsessed or "just getting the details for his report," it's always some kind of manipulation (or could be). We never see him in an unguarded moment, just himself alone. Like link says, he's a complete blank. Without a mystery to solve, maybe there is no Columbo.

    For years I thought maybe Mrs. Columbo was dead and he was keeping her alive in spirit, but then there were all these hints throughout the show that she was alive and real. There was also that awful Mrs. Columbo spin-off that never got any steam, but I'd like to pretend that it wasn't canon in any way.

    Nice Doc. You obviously did a lot of work on it. Sincere kudos I thought you might enjoy reading this TRUE story of our own experience with "The Changeling": >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> You will think this comment is fictional. It is NOT. It is absolutely TRUE. Back in 1980, a group of us went to “the” theatre in Guelph, Ontario to see “The Changeling.” Despite scaring the heck out of us, it was a superb production and we were talking about it all the way home. But as we passed a pile of garbage by the roadside, we saw - perched on top - AN EXACT COPY of the old 3-wheeled chair used in the film. That alone totally FREAKED us out. However, it was SO similar, we decided to stop and pick it up. The next night, I took another friend (who did NOT like “horror”) to see “The Changeling,” and when it was over we walked down a darkened street towards our parked car. Halfway there, my friend was HORRIFIED to see the 3-wheeleed chair roll out of the underbrush (unaided) and head straight towards him! Talk about a “freak-out.” I was worried he’d have a heart attack. But the sounds of our other (hidden) friends gutting themselves laughing on the other side of the road - and the discovery of the fishing line we’d used to make the wheelchair “move on its own” - soon made him realize, he’d been Pranked. 🤣 The truly amazing part is that I’ve never seen an old, wicker, 3-wheeled chair before - or since - that night. WEIRD! (Great movie, BTW.)

    Although it has often been said of this scene that it is rare (or, as expressed here) “astronomically rare” for a man to cry on film, it is patently wrong. George O’Brien cries in Murnau’s “Sunrise”, Lew Ayres cries buckets in “All Quiet on the Western Front”, Lionel Barrymore cries in “Grand Hotel”, Gary Cooper sobs in “A Farewell to Arms”, Victor McLageln in “The Informer”, James Stewart in “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”, Charles Laughton in “Hunchback of Notre Dame”, Olivier in “Wuthering Heights” and Cagney famously cries in “Angels with Dirty Faces” - and these, all films preceding “Gone with the Wind”, are just what I recall off the top of my head. What is true, though, is that Gable had never cried on film before, and was convinced to do so by de Havilland. But when that is said, “Gone with the Wind” stands out for its gender bending. Scarlett O’Hara is remarkably manly, whereas Rhett cries in this scene (Gable) and Ashley is a weak sapling all through the film.

    The lack of machoness was always very nice. As were his manners. He never spoke or acted in a degrading way towards women. There was also no undercurrent of racism, or homophobia. Now a lot of that was likely due to the character of the people who wrote HIS character. He clearly loved and respected his wife too, and was kind to animals. But it was nice that someone of that character was so liked by so much of the public. It is hard to imagine these days, when cruelty and crudity are what such a large part American public seems to admire, along with racism, homophobia, and kindness. While gentleness and good manners and intelligence are mocked and derided.

    Columbo appears to get angry not at murderers who have already killed someone, but when somebody else's life is in danger. That's why he is so uncommonly confrontative in the hospital scene and in the scene with Nimoy.

      Yes, there's definitely a pattern going on there. He doesn't just fly off the handle at random. But even when he does get angry, it always feels like he's in control.
