PopPop's Workshop
Приєднався 1 сер 2021
As a grandfather returning to woodworking and learning to overcome my physical disabilities and limitations, I hope my journey will be helpful to others as I try to learn new tricks and technology along the way. I'm grateful to be joined in this journey by my wife of 37 years.

We finished the project back in our shop with Alumilite resin, Starbond mica powders, and General Finishes hard wax oil. Tools and products we use in our shop link...

Custom boards deserve custom finish.
I've had one of these DC3401 units for over a year. It's worked fairly well, but I will say it is underpowered for anything but the tiniest shops and really isn't a whole lot better than a shop vac. I just ordered the DC1300 unit. If you're considering the DC3401, I would suggest you get the next model up, the DC1300.
I also noticed you put an insert into the hole on the side of the saw. Where did you get it? Did you 3d print it? I'm keen to do the same if I get the same saw as I've heard it can dramatically improve dust collection. Does it overheat the saw or blade though? Thank you in advance. :)
@@jpap123 it came with my saw. I bought it used and the previous owner installed it. Not sure where he got it but, I'm sure they can be found or printed.

Thanks for a great video! If the Wen track saw could cut the full depth of a similar hardwood, would you manually reduce the depth so you wouldn't go all the way through, so the saw doesn't bind? I'm thinking of getting the same Wen track saw and the only thing I wished it had was a riving knife. Since you didn't go ask the way through in your demonstration, you didn't need a riving knife on your cut, but you did need to protect against binds with your Japanese saw. How do you approach other cuts where you could go all the way through with the Wen if you wanted to?
@@jpap123 if I notice binding, I'll stop and put a shim in the kerf to keep it open
@poppopsworkshop Awesome, and thanks for the quick replies! You've definitely gives me more confidence in buying the same saw. My most immediate needs are ripping sheet goods and cutting parallel decking boards flush to a picture-framing edge, but it is good to know that with some care it can be used.for hardwoods even without the riving knife.
Thanks for sharing our battery,Vanon will provide enough power for your tools.
Thanks for supporting the channel.

Nana has done amazing stained glass since I was a child so over 20 years! Probably closer to 25 because I am old!
Nana made me an awesome Moose out of felt!
I do woodworking primarily. But I have a welder that I use now and then. I welded up some lumber storage brackets, I modified a couple of things I needed to etc. A dedicated welding space would be nice, but not in the cards currently.
@@BishjamIC cool
woodworking and welding are not a good mix to do in the same physical space. Eventually (shortly actually)you will have contaminated the area with a grime/metal filings/oil mixture that you will constantly be frustrated with when making wood projects. Of course the two skills compliment one another but they are not compatible in a shared work area.
@@walterdimmick653 good point
I'm a single guy, and a solo woodworker who also dabbles in upholstery, photography, and cutting mats for my pictures. I also do all my own plumbing, electrical, and appliance repair.
@@williambrowntangleoakwoods7430 ive always thought upholstery would be a great complimentary skill to woodworking
I started in the shop and since my wife has made a number of mosaics (with a DeWalt combo battery miter saw) for our home and family and friends for last Christmas. I also do other projects around the house and work on our vehicles if need be.

What's the point of your push stick if you're just going to keep your hand right there anyway
To stabilize the board and at the very end when he just used the stick

Great video Tony. I’d love a small CNC so all these videos come in handy to learn some of the pitfalls before I finally take the plunge and buy one.
@@fathogwoodworking glad to be helpful. It's nice that small shops have some good options in CNC. I look forward to seeing what you go with.
You probably already know this…but when you get it all dialed in and are ready for your final run, you can lay down some Oramask (or similar) film before cutting so when you pour your epoxy you protect the wood around the borders. Since you are using ply, you don’t have much leeway to sand off overflow.
@@pengel200 I'd probably have forgotten to do that. Thanks for the reminder

Hi Tony my name is Eloy the handyman 👨🔧 I am doing woodworking for some projects since you are the expert what wood is stronger oak that will last for ever ?
@eloyruiz5958 thanks for the compliment, but I'm really just an enthusiastic novice. There are many durable species. Cyprus, teak, mesquite, ironwood, Osage orange to name a few. Much depends on what your making and will it be an interior or exterior product
You are going to have to explain the blue tape to me. I make Chris hang everything that requires 2 nails or screws 😂 Looking good!
@ZachysMom88 the tape allows me to mark where the fasteners should go. Then I put it on my level line, drill holes, insert fasteners, and hang the item.
@@poppopsworkshop genius! A tip we all need!
Those are some beautiful stains! I’ve never stained walnut or maple, just because they’re both so pretty naturally, buuuut I kinda want to try it now! 😂 Nice case study Tony!
@@DIYWoodntYou I was surprised how they made the walnut look. I wasn't expecting it
Another fantastic source for mica powder is Glitter Chimp. They also have literal tons of glitter as well as demo videos on UA-cam. Color shifting Mica powder is awesome but pricey.
I learned a trick from a painter friend of mine. Did you see how the edges of your painters tape was curling up and not staying down which will cause bleeding under the tape? If before you stain you wet the tape down and press it to the wood, after letting it dry the tape will not curl up and will stay adhered to the wood to prevent bleeding.
@@kenmaiseljr9855 great tip. Thanks

I have never had much success with connecting dust collection to a power miter saw. But, that could just be me. I hope it works out for you. I have seen dust shrouds that help to contain the dust. The seem a bit bulky to me. As for getting into small spaces, I keep a midget in my tool box for those occasions.
