This is actually how I found out. I was on my way to work in an AT&T Broadband van, and turned on the radio. I had not turned on the TV at all prior to work that day. I worked next to an Air Force Base and the planes were just landing from wherever, one after another. Landing anywhere they could.

Wow. My husband and I were listening to the Howard Stern show when the planes hit. I remember they thought it was a prank at 1st but quickly learned otherwise.

I was in Delaware doing mutual fund accounting so we relied on information from Wall Street to complete our work and I was listening to the show and I think I was the one to tell my boss and the office the minute I heard it on the radio. We went to work every day that week and were told to go home right after we got there.

It's ironic how directors of classic horror films are often the nicest, most passionate people, while some from bigger-budget films (like the original Bond LaserDisc commentaries) come off as cynical and mean-spirited. I loved Siskel & Ebert, but they completely missed the escapism and creativity that made 80s horror so special for both filmmakers and audiences.
