Vision and Sound | David Bailey in Conversation with Tim Marlow
On the occasion of his exhibition, Vision and Sound, the acclaimed artist and photographer David Bailey joins Tim Marlow OBE, Chief Executive and Director of London's Design Museum, in a dialogue that delves into the themes of his current solo show in London.
Their conversation addresses Bailey's approach to art and photography, portraiture, and his encounters with legendary musicians captured in the iconic works on display. Offering insights and reflections on Bailey's illustrious practice, the talk illuminates how Bailey's work has pushed the boundaries of photography and portraiture for over six decades.
----
David Bailey CBE is one of the most renowned photographers of our modern age. With an artistic practice over six decades, his work crosses genres - from fashion to portraiture, nudes, to still lifes, documentary, landscape, and reportage - and expands into painting and sculpture.
Bailey's photography discards the formal structures of the medium by introducing fresh energy and a new way of looking that has come to define a cultural shift for a new generation. He has photographed everyone, from Queen Elizabeth II and Nelson Mandela to the first nation people of Australia and Indian Sadhus to fashion, music, film, and art icons. With a minimalist and direct style, he reveals the beauty and spirit of all of his subjects. In his words: 'It's not the camera that takes the picture; it's the person.' Uncompromising crops and striking, seemingly spontaneous poses are his signatures. His black-and-white and colour portraits have broken down barriers of class and race with their radical sense of energy and individualism, equalising everyone who appears before his lens.
Tim Marlow OBE is a British writer, broadcaster and art historian who is the Director and Chief Executive of the Design Museum, London. Prior to this role, he was the Artistic Director of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. He has lectured on art and culture in over 40 countries.

It needs to reopen: John Lydon the landlord (aka Johnny Rotten)
I'm a 68 year old retired engineer. I have been a photography nut and music nut for many years. Thank you to David Bailey & Wilko Johnson ( above a lot of others ) for my passions. ❤
..always a huge bailey fan, his photos put him up there as one of the best...also love these interviews with tim marlow..
Well, I sure was born too late, would have been a regular.
Peppiatt stated: "I didn't dare go and knock." But why not? Why couldn't Peppiatt just go and knock on Giacometti's door and talk to him? I was looking at my most recent sculptures and it was obvious that they were far superior to the sculptures of Giacometti which are so embarrassingly bad, and no one really likes them, but art critics have to pretend to because they are obliged to just as they pretend to like de Kooning because they are obliged to. I am still waiting for Peppiatt to knock on my door but I don't think he dare knock: but it is his loss, not mine.
i went twice late 80s with older company thent ended up owning two clubs in the Charing x rd i was propably twenty at the time, I miss all that now im 60 The A&R , TPA, Jerrys I kind of mis those days, Nicky Holloway
Artists are the biggest gossips on earth!
I’m trying to work.
reminds me a lot of the landlady at the pub in spittlefilds where tracey emin used to drink. Genuinely one of the most unpleasant people I have ever met in my life - no doubt those she takes a fancy to love her. Idk maybe rudeness its a 'cool' 1950s thing
I can see the influence of Clive Arrowsmith on his colour work.
Bailey talks of Picasso, now He looks like Picasso... This is a strange and intriguing sort of homage...
Great interview! David Bailey is such a personality natural entertaining.
Great interview with an outstanding guy.
Put the names of the interviewees up !
Like in jail drinking pruno 😅😅😅
I see where the gangs got the idea of the casitas!!! The underground world is so amazingly complex, you never know what you gona find on every turn. Amazing how this ideas transcend time, cultures, borders
Clubs are odd things. What did it mean if some owner/manager subjectively liked or disliked you? It all sounds like membership of the cool set at school, or the Bullingdon at Oxford. What's the appeal, apart from exclusivity? If you're rejected by a group, you probably couldn't have been happy or safe in it anyway.
Unfunny anecdotes. 'Apolitical' Tories.
Went a few times, firstly as a guest, thereafter just wandered in. My favourite visit was just after the smoking ban. Walked in to be greeted by everyone looking at me, checking me out. Took a few seconds but I passed muster and then all the cigarettes emerged from under chairs, sides of legs, every possible hiding place. It was like a 20s speakeasy. People were chucking their tab ends out of that window next to the toilet. Loved the place.

Superb! Thanks for posting.
Finally someone shares my opinion of Cartier Bresson
Thank you for uploading this vedio of my hero.
Strange interviewer repeating questions or similar questions from previous interview with him ?
I do wish you wouldn't keep asking him the same questions trying to get the same answers he's said before. There's SO much to learn from him and sadly not much time.
This is very interesting I have some Books 📚 about the colony club in soho
Well, the clips are good
Very nice and humble interview with David Bailey and Tim Marlow. They are ideal together as interviewer and interviewee, the interview is great, it just flows like ice cream! Great insights, stories and the whole historical buzz is great to listen to about the 1960's. The photographs are savage, they remind me of that Turkish fella Karsh. Thanks David Bailey. Look at that for a studio! Cheers Dellasposa.
Francis!
Snapped with Rolliflex, Hasselblad + B&W high contrast.
He also used 35mm a lot. (Pentax on shrimpton for vogue) plus nikon, nikkormat and leica.
@@gbwildlifeuk8269 Yeah, Bailey swore by Pentax legendary reliability.
Bailey is a top bloke with an amazing resume. No bull, says it as it is. Him, Duffy and Donovan really set the bar. Poor fella sounds like he's now got COPD. His legacy is assured.
What is the club used for now anybody know
The ground floor is a restaurant called Ducksoup. 41 Dean Street.
It is an apartment
Imagine the ghosts!

Bailey's portraits are so beautiful. It's pure art. Enjoyed this vid. Cheers
I can hardly believe that only 133 people have seen this Vid with only 11 likes ??? Can you imagine if it had been HCB or Stephen Shore maybe. This man is a UK National Treasure who is not only one of most famous, talented and original photographers EVER, but also an amazing wit and raconteur. You can come to Cornwall for dinner with me anytime Bailey !
Excactly what’s wrong with the world these days
Really good documentary, I have a particular affinity to it as I made it!
But why does the volume keep going up and down?
Great film mate! Really enjoyed it.
@@friendlier You need to ask the uploader that question.
Fascinating.
@@ajs41 the Uploader would only know if the Uploader actually edited and put the video together - the volume problem is caused by different audio and video segments knitted together, without paying attention to the different volume levels of each.
I am reading sporadically Tales from the Colony Room.. i am fascinated , amused to snorting laughter and terrified in equal measure- just before it closed i went up for a drink with someone, so i saw it before it disappeared at least .. if hell is other people then at least this place seemed a hell of other intersting people ❤

What a tragedy.. I recently read Tracey's biography and the most moving part was in chapter 3 when her cousin Albert smashed out her teeth with a McCowans silver toffee hammer during a game of Connect Four, when he accused her of cheating.. She had to be flown to Germany for emergency reconstruction of her lower jaw..
Horrible, and from what i read , although verbally there was ruthlessness cruelty and blood, no physical violence was ever tolerated, or espoused so this is an awful story
Anyone know what date this conversation roughly took place ?
Presumably back in September just before the exhibition on the 23rd ?
@@deegeeofpenryn Thank you.
"...course, they're all dead now. Cheerio!"
Notice how the man uses the word sex, before all this gender nonsense we have today. The hippies were right.

Fantastic tales - thank you!
Had some cracking times at The Colony, mainly in the downstairs toilet with Wojas wrapped around the pipe. Check out my Substack, a couple of my tales mention the place: chrisdangerfield.substack.com/
The biggest mystery about F.B. is how he managed to live to the ripe old age of 82. The best one can say about him is that he wasn’t a chocoholic. Every other excess known to medical science he pursued with vigor.
best statement about FB ever!

yeh, he was a daily drinker !
I have never been to The Colony Room. However, it certainly had a reputation. Whether good or bad, I would have enjoyed seeing it for myself. You've got to give them one thing, they were definite characters. Thank you for the upload.
Life in that area is very boring now compared to then.
A boring old pruvliged fart club to be honest
beautiful Soho just died andbecame a gay and accountants rich hangout..this richness will never ever return
the same happened to Shoreditch after the 90s.
Get your facts straight. Soho has always been gay
Pubs close at 23:00h in London since years, last place on the planet I want to live.
Where do they close later?
@@ajs41 In Belgium there is no closing time. A bar needs to close 12 hours a day yes, but up to the bar when this is. So after a club closes, just look for the after club.
