Reviewing Grips number 2 from greater mercury comics. a 1990 power comic?
I picked this up a few years ago. The other cartoonists credited have shorter black and white stories or art in the back. That Mott guy did some art for a band I was friends with in the 90s so it was cool to see some of his comics.
I loved the art and the writing was great too. I really wish that when there's a division of labor the publishers would let us know who does what.
I didn't know, there was the comic book of FRIGHT NIGHT. I still have that original 1985 movie on DVD. And i also played the computer game of that movie on my Amiga 500. "WELCOME TO FRIGHT NIGHT!" "Oh, You're so cool, Brewster!" 😹👍
I'm guessing you loved it then what did you like most about it?
@@alexturbin04401 It's been so many years, since i saw it last time. I can't remember, what was the best part 😹. I'm also amazed, that Amanda Bearse (Marcy Darcy of MARRIED WITH CHILDREN) also plays in that movie.
It is then current Dick Ayers art he did a few years work there
Yeah i like the art a lot, not sure how deep the stories can get in good girl. But I'm trying to deepen Sireen so who knows?
This is a great looking book
Yeah Kurt did a great job and the original strips are awesome.
born again was 86 im pretty sure without looking it up anyway
Yeah it was 86, man what a year for comics. So he totally could have gotten inspiration from it, which there's absolutly nothing wrong with that. he's not swiping or being too blatant with it.
yeah it really is a rather ugly cover for a rather good comic. i did however get the psychological theme from it. i just think it couldve been done much better.
I grew up with Oriental Heroes (called Tiger Wong in Indonesia). Also force of Buddha’s Palm (Tapak Sakti).
I only have a few but I'd love to get a bunch of them for reviews. I have one in Chinese as well.
@@alexturbin04401 unfortunately, I don’t have any. Been in the states since 2001 and haven’t returned yet. Maybe that’s a good idea for keepsakes when I bring em back.
Last I knew, Bill Black is very much alive, but not very active in AC Comics anymore.
I didn't know ac comics was still publishing
@@alexturbin04401 They celebrate their 40th year in 2025. Femforce #200 was published last year.
Some points on Hero Sand, hold the mayo: Never have a flying car with wheels still on it - if it's flying, what are the wheels for? I've noticed more than a few UG (or alternative) comics doing this. The more photorealistic the art is, the worse the plotting and dialogue is. Cars in particular are boring, and this thing has like dozens of sleep-inducing car ad-looking panels in it. Terrible trope dept.: Gorgeous model girls are usually found crammed into lousy neighborhoods. Keep dreaming, guys. And please create your own characters - don't rip off Plastic Man or Nick Fury.
I understand your feelings, that may be why it didn't go for very long or continue as another series, it's a very slick looking book but its also very mundane, nothing really stands out as unique.
Vince Locke is Awesome! Check out A History Of Violence if you haven't already. Great stuff!
I definitly want to check out history of violence, the comic and the movie.
That was a GREAT STORY the character is Victor a Superman like character that started with the Guardsman during the Golden Age era and how he witness the decline of superheroes morals thru the years. I wish they completed the story.
That does sound very interesting!
Thank you for sharing!
Of course! I still havnt gotten into the good girl books but I'm hoping to!
The art is excellent. Bought them when they came out. Im way old..63.
Yeah the art is superb. Just wish the story had more meat.
Fancy free
What's up with your knife ? Are you in ok
Knife? You mean the skull lance? It's from one of my comics, Death knights use them as their weapon.
There’s a pretty good documentary on Bill Black called strange luck. It’s on UA-cam
I'll check it out, thabks!
Thats fucken sick
Thank you! It's the cover for Random Access number 24
Looks amazing ! I love Leo's art style, very dynamic and detailed. Kind of reminds me of old skool Jae Lee without hiding most of the detail in shadows. Is that printed on news print? Love the old skool colouring too! would also look great in just B&W. The foldout insert is really cool, i dig turning pages for double splashes too! Killer comic!!!
I see the Jae lee influences too, no its not newsprint though I did print one copy in newsprint just for him.
Holy cow Alex I can't thank you enough for such an amazing and truly insightful review. I actually was a speed metal musician in the nineties. And seriously considered trying to get my old buddies to put a few songs on a CD for me to add along with the comic but the lageistics just didn't come together. 😂 nut you never know.
I really like that old school airbrush look
Yeah it has an old school vibe for sure, my only problem really is that it's a little stiff
Such a cool series!
I think this series takes place in the Ultraverse. IIRC, the Ultraverse creators brought this character into their universe.
Oh that's cool, then it would be possible to see ot in the mcu.
great review man! the drawings are so beatiful...
Yeah its a nice looking book for sure

Awesome artwork! Looks like it has air brushing effects. The Ink washes and white colour pencil is a nice touch.
Oh those early warlock 5 covers are amazing!
Very cool review. I own this series and the art is fantastic! I love Timothy Truman.
I love how the noir feel is translated to what was then modern times nearly 30 years ago!
I have been a long time fan of Linsner and Dawn for many years. Still have most things he's done including 'Cry for Dawn' #1, Church of Dawn merch, tee shirts, personal drawings, posters, etc. Thanks for the vid.❤😊
Yeah he's definitly one of my very favorites it was such a sad thing when someone stole a whole bunch of his artwork. I always feel comic fans should be held to a higher moral than everyone else but maybe I'm just naive
the only Tim Truman marvel work I know of was a Kazar graphic novel, that unfortunately, he didnt draw, just wrote.
He did a green arrow comic that I know of, prestige bound and that was cool.
@alexturbin04401 are thinking Green Arrow LongBow Hunters? If so that's Mike Grell. He did however do Hawkworld for DC in prestige format. It's great!
Very interesting and unique style!
Yeah definitly!I havnt seen anything like it really
Aw cool! I have the first issue because I love to snatch up power comics, but I’ve never read it. I’m gonna have to change that now
@Swayze_crazy it's got great points, imanitive is definitly the biggest one
this was an absolute fave of mine when i was a kid! great world building as the story and characters really exploded in the next several issues. lonestar, twilight, nightmare would all be fleshed out! i do agree with you that the faces bothered we're badly drawn and distracting to the story. Independent / elite comics would also release the first couple issues of the pulp hero Twilight Avenger title which was phenomenal! It would later be moved to malibu. they also released an anthology sampler titled "Elite Presents" which would star the very 1st appearance of Butch Burcham's Dark Wolf. they looked like they we're really on a roll but sadly it wasn't to be, going bankrupt and merging with Malibu. I always wondered why Epsilon Wave never got another chance with malibu comics like Twilight Avanger and Darkwolf did? heck, even seadragon was a decent read and got his own little solo run
@joechlystun7979 yeah I definitly have to check out dark wolf, I has a copy at one point but I'll get another

@DonaldWynecoop me too! I'll be going over more daredevil in the future, it just feels like cartoonist kayfabe always went through all the miller stuff so I'm holding that off for a while.
@@alexturbin04401 Good idea. David Mazzucchelli is probably my fave DD artist. He did quite a few issues before Born Again.
I totally remember buying this ish off the rack! My (probably) first time seeing Mike (min-yo-la) Mignola artwork. Great comic!

Hey Alex! Steven pointed me to this! Wow! This one was at the bottom of your stack, huh? :) Thank you for the review and the mostly nice things. ;) As Steven pointed out, this was early in our career--actually my 2nd ever published book. Seeing that splash on page 3 makes me cringe! LOL Nick, the letterer, had never lettered a comic either, but--at the time--we really thought it fit the style of the art/story. Looking back now, I can absolutely see it is often hard to read. Mitch's pencils/storytelling just got better and better and I think we really jived from 8-12, and his storytelling really became top notch! It's actually NOT a Marvel comic--it was and is a creator owned comic (like a lot of the Aircel/Eternity comics). In fact, we just completed crowdfunding a 4 issue mini-series last year and are getting reading to work on another! Again, thanks for taking the time to review the comic!
@brolandmann awesome! I hope you don't take my criticisms too hard I 100% know that all the issues I had were due to inexperience. I I really do love your art, we all grow and get better. It's also cool that you get to keep your creations and marvel didn't swallow it up (though a cat and Mouse show on Disney would be epic!)
Hey, Alex! Thanks for the review- I was the inker and cover artist on this book- it was done 34 years ago- we were all at the beginning of our comics careers- Mitch went on to do a lot of work for DC Comics and Dark Horse, and Roland became an editor for Malibu’s Ultraverse line, and has recently started up his own line of comics called Silverline- The veterinarian Demon knew Cat and Mouse from tye first issue, when Mouse brought a wounded Cat into the veterinarian clinic to be cared for- and I know the rebuttal to that- “If that’s so, then why wasn’t it even mentioned once in this issue?” And to that I’ll just have to reiterate that it was 34 years ago and we were all rookies then- we’ve all had lots of on-the-job training since then, that’s for sure-
@stevenbutlerstudios thank you so much for letting us know some of the stuff you did. I did particularly like the covers the most and yeah I could tell most of the things I had issues with were simply from being younger. Were you given the opportunity to do the pencils for the whole book? I'll definitly be reviewing more of these types of books, people really seem to enjoy them.
No sir, I was the inker on this book- Mitch Byrd was the penciler-
Mann published his Silverline books back in the late 90s. I discovered this line several years ago and was able to find all the comics published. They are dated but still a fun read. Also, I don't know who owns Cat & Mouse but I don't believe it's Marvel since Mann published a third volume of Cat & Mouse recently.
Thank you for the kind words Alex, I'm extremely grateful for the showcase. The influences were spot on. The website hasn't been updated in years but I'm turning it into a bigcartel shop soon. Nowadays active on IG. The first book was the oldest and most experimental from 2016. Glad to hear your takeaways. -Charles
