Welcome to A Garden for Birds, I'm so glad you're here! This habitat gardening channel focuses on fostering life and beauty in the garden - it's amazing how fulfilling a garden can be when it's connected back into your local ecosystem!
I have always loved gardens and landscape design - but it wasn't until I planted my first native garden that I learned the joy of watching birds and pollinators eat, sleep, and raise their young in my garden...and now I'm hooked! Join me as I do my best to make my backyard a pollinator and bird habitat by planting to provide food, shelter, and places to raise their sweet little families!

Another wonderful video. I was watching this while planting seeds lol
Thanks so much for this information!!!
This was both interesting and informative. I have a question for you. Where can you purchase native plants? If you have an online store you purchase from, please let us know. Thanks for all the wonderful information!
Fantastic 😍😍😍😍
I am so happy to have found your channel. We moved into a home on undevelped land. The side of the property backs up against a wildlife corridor. I am wanting to restore a meadow for wildlife, including deer. I don't mind planting extra for the deer. Thank you for your natural habitat approach to gardening. I am so inspired.
I collect wild seeds all the time. I never collect more than 10% Usually from public lands
Wonderful garden. I am West Australia and have native plants for my area in my garden and habitat gardening is amazing. Your video is so well done and well researched. So much information. Such an excellent video and very inspiring.
We need more awareness of the pollinators crisis!!😢
Love this channel so much we need more people like this ❤❤❤
I have that same syndrome! OMG! Exactly the same symptoms. God love Etsy. My husband asked me to "stop!!!!" Then, one day, he said "you are not going to stop, are you?" I said "no." He gave up and joined me in me my plant madness.
Loved this so thank you and plant a Miss Satomi Cronus Koufax in other dogwoods place
Cronus Koufax Miss Satomi
Kousa. Spell check is killing it
Contact your load Road Maintenance Dept. and see if you can get them to not spray these identified areas.
“Without irritating your neighbors” if I cared what my neighbors think I would’ve bought a house in an HOA.
I have sooo many of the wrong flowers, i m so mad at myself not thinking about this earlier
I couldn't help but smile when I heard the catbird call in the background audio... such friendly/fearless birds :)
I have a somewhat unrelated but still related question So i have a very little amount of grass in the backyard, zero at the front. After 3 years or pretty intense planting, mulching, leaving things alone etc. I still don't have birds. They will come, i know, but i have a mice issue. I found in our basement that the neighbor's shed, and i saw them running in the backyard. I'm in the middle of town, i can't infest the neighbourhood with mouse. How would you deal with this? My neighbours are very patient with my crazy gardening. I don't want to destroy our relationship.
I definitely need more native flowers. When i did my yard, i used mostly free flowers like iris and daylily. I have very little grass, mostly planted with flowers and fruit trees, and i have zero birds yet.
Omg add to cart add to cart add to cart is strong I definitely have garden deficiency syndrome
Lawns were a way for the nobility to flaunt their wealth through the excessive use of water. I find the practice insanely wasteful and sad. I'm slowly working to remedy this in my garden space.
You mention Caroline, I hit subscribe.
I call my prairie smoke trool heads😊
Great video . Glad and truly happy humans like you guys exist , gives me hope in humanity
Thank you for this beautiful video. In 2024, I planted my first native garden, and I can't wait for this spring when it wakes up. There is only one issue I have with the logs: besides the termites, I have persistent problems with wasps and yellow jackets. They simply refuse to leave my property. I have been attacked and my boys too. This year I was terrified in finding that after I removed the ground nests, they went up. So now I have a paper wasp nest high up in one of my trees 😢... I understand I'm the one invading their space and they are being tenacious in defending their territory but I really want me and my kids to enjoy gardening and nature, and those wasps are not helping 😢😢
How did your efforts turn out?
Great inspiration!
Honestly, F the neighbors. I can understand if the house was in a HOA or similar situation with rules on how to keep the property but otherwise what the neighbors think of the aesthetic of your garden should be the least and last of one’s concerns. Imo it’s important to be mindful of the neighbors by avoiding putting near the border trees, shrubs, perennials that grow too big/too fast and “overflow” on the neighbors property, or drop a lot seeds/leaves, or completely block the light, in short one should be careful one’s choices don’t cause practical inconvenience to others but to let others influence our aesthetics choices is a no no for me.
That's certainly a valid way to feel 😅 For those in an HOA, I think the neighbors can be a major concern, and many people are afraid to even try. The video I link in the end addresses people in HOAs more directly and cites a case in MD where a homeowner won against an HOA trying to force her to remove her habitat gardens. Hopefully that case can be cited as precedence in other states and regions for when the neighbors are quite literally trying to destroy what a person has worked so hard to build!
Great Video. Thanks. Which tool/app are you using for your designs?
Thank you! This app is called iScape
I have a million tickets from the city for converting my yard to all native. The only grass I have is in the front yard😆
Wow, awesome!! Sounds like heaven!
Wonderful. I planted my whole yard in native pollinator shrubs 3 years ago. It is wonderful. But learned a lot from this video.
I just found you recently and am LOVING gorging on your content. Thanks so much!
Thank you, that's very kind!
When we moved into our home over 30 years ago there was all lawn and no garden beds other than a small area in the front. Every year we took away more and more grass and added perennials - some natives. I’m adding more natives as I can afford or swap with friends. We’re having our deck replaced thus the materials have killed the small amount of grass we have left. Will be expanding beds and using recycled pavers and bricks for a pathway instead of grass!
Sounds so wonderful! It can definitely get expensive. Swapping with friends and starting from seed are some great ways to save money while building your oasis! 🙌
I can't help but rub the leaves of a New England aster and smell my hand. almost smells like soap. the anise hyssops, on the other hand, I can smell from 10 feet away. before I planted them, I had not seen a gold finch in my yard. I planted 2, and three years later have at least 30 ( cardboard and leaf mulch bed ), and now when I go out in the morning, there are dozens of gold finches that I've startled out of there. I feel bad for disturbing their feast
That's so wonderful! So fun to have them eating from your garden! My kids and I are always walking around rubbing leaves and smelling them - my mother always did this with me, very nostalgic to now share it with my babes!
I can't believe I'm still here either lol. long video, and well done! totally understand the winter blues. just like you, I'm already shopping for next year. gotta make sure I have evening primrose on the list. although my yard has blooms in early spring, then mid summer to late fall, I speak for the pollinators in my yard in early summer when I say, this place sucks! gotta fix that ...
Shopping for next year seems to be a powerful coping mechanism! I noticed a seasonal gap in my yard about the same time as well - great to observe that, that way we can keep building up the menu!
GREAT VIDEO!
Gardening deficiency syndrome 😂😂😂😂😂 it's real!!!! I laughed out loud when you said that ❤. I also started native plant research 3 years ago, and implementing the changes has been very rewarding. I have been using seeds for economy, having more failures, but losing the lawn has won over my husband 😊, and leaving the leaves has definitely brought in more birds. Great video 🎉
So wonderful! Keep up the good work!! 🙌
Love your delivery of information 💚
Some good design app recommendations, please.
So far I've only worked with iScape, which was the app in this video. I've enjoyed it and find it very helpful to brainstorm ideas and get a vision! Yulia from Y Garden has a video where she talks about 3-4 design apps - would definitely be worth checking that out!
I’ve rewatched this video already three times. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us.
Thank you, that means a lot - truly! 💓
I love your videos! They are so helpful & informative. QUESTION: Can you show me links where the Oak leaf hydrangea is the host plant for zebra swallowtails? The paw paw tree is the host plant for a zebra swallowtail. I cannot find any other information about an oak leaf hydrangea also being one.
I went re-digging to and am only really finding one broken link: www.ramga.org/product-page/hydrangea-quercifolia-oakleaf-hydrangea-1 The original text in here was: Because Oakleaf Hydrangeas bloom on old wood, any pruning should take place after blooming to preserve next year's buds. Host to larvae of the Zebra Swallowtail... (then it cuts off the preview, and the link is broken). I can't find any reliable further information showing that it's a host for the Zebra Swallowtail, so this looks to be an error. I'll work on adding some notes to correct this - thank you for raising it!
I love all the info! Especially the dead stuff and all the bug stuff! I'm your newest fan!
Awesome! Welcome aboard!!
I just stumbled across this video. Love this. Very informative! Thank you for doing this.
You always have the info im looking for, love you!!
Awesome, so glad it might be useful! Thank you for watching! 💓
Love your content, new subscriber ❤ I really appreciate you citing websites, wish they were linked in the shownotes. I keep going back and pausing to find the address.
Yay, welcome aboard! This video was actually a compilation of videos I've made over the past few years. The original videos should have the links - but I will work to also port them over to this one as well!
One of the best, informative videos i've watched and I have watched a LOT of them this winter. Thank you so much for spending your time making this video so entertaining and educational.
Thank you so much! Glad it might be useful!!
Wow. Not enough of these videos that help you "see" design. Well done.
So glad it might be useful!
I live in Ontario and was inspired by the British "hedgerows" which support birds and other wildlife. We have a semi-rural property. I planted a hedgerow of trees and shrubs local to me, including an existing white pine, serviceberry, red osier dogwood, winterberry, smooth hydrangea, and 3 sugar maples in a long "row" about 80 feet long and 15 feet wide. These were the few species of native plants I could find at conventional nurseries. As I learned more and discovered native plant nurseries, I added nannyberry and alternate leaf dogwood. In another location (under a black walnut tree) I added spicebush and lots of shade loving native perennials.
Sounds like heaven! You've got some real beauties there - wishing you many happy bird visits!!
I love your videos! Please don't stop! ❤

One of the best gardening videos I’ve watched. You have a way of presenting a lot of dry details and facts in an engaging way! I try to be more nature-focused in my gardening style but it seems so overwhelming. Your approach has inspired me! The bees, birds and critters of NW Arkansas thank you!
Thank you so much! Wonderful that you're working toward a nature-focused gardening - it can certainly feel overwhelming, but hopefully the pay-off makes it worth it!!
