I like electric guitars and tube amps. Old school and prefer simple stuff with knobs over gear with touchscreens and menues. There is beauty in having less options and focus on just playing music.

Fender 57 Custom Deluxe 5E3 - Inside Look
Inside look of my Fender Custom 57 Deluxe guitar tube amp.
It is a thing of beauty.
Recorded with iPhone
Les Paul Tribute Junior P90, bridge pickup - using volume knob to clean up the sound.
Strymon Flint (reverb 50s)
Amp setting: all amp knobs at 12, instrument input, high input
All natural amp distortion
Attenuator in between amp and built-in speaker (Two Notes Captor X - mid attenuation setting)
Need attenuation - very loud amp unless you are going for clean tone and/or using the low input

This is a quick test of my new Fender 57 Custom Deluxe - Hard Wired re-issue of the 5E3 circuit. I did the same lick with a Stratocaster and a Les Paul at Clean setting and with both Volumes at 12 as well as showing what the guitar volume does with the amp at full gain with both guitars. Plugged direct to the amp, recorded with an SM-57 and stock speaker in the amp. Added reverb post (not a lot...

My first attempt at Stone Temple Pilot "Plush" Mostly amp distortion but added at Tube Screamer in front for a bit more bite. Both Pickups on the guitar. Bridge Volume at 10, Neck Volume at 8.5. Got also a "Two Notes Captor" loadbox for cheap at 4ohms, so I can plug in-between the amp and the speaker cab. I am actually quite impressed with the build-in cab sim. Revv D20 - First Impression?

I bought a used Revv D20 for about the price of a two notes captor X at a local guitar center. What is cool is that the Two Notes licence was still intact and the amp has a 1 yr warranty. Really like how it sounds and the convenience of built-in load box and two notes DI. Loaded IRs are just fine to me and you can tweak and store 6 of them onboard for live use or practice time. I was looking to...

Mesa Boogie California Tweed 2:20 - From Clean to Dirty
Переглядів 4284 місяці тому
Les Paul Standard straight to amp. Shade of tones from clean to dirty to "Fuzzy". No pedals needed. Great natural distortion. For this specific tune, I would likely be aiming for in between Edge of Break-up and Dirty setting. Did not do with Strat, but in testing is later on, quite a lot cleaner sounding (logical) I tried a setting with master volume at 10 and gain at 10 (Fuzzy) . I think it ha...

Hey Jazz Cat. May I ask what dB app you're using?
Decibel X
Sweet
thank you for the settings. I finally got mine last week, I have been wanting this amp since it was released and very short time after, the brand was not supported in Europe. I am glad Mesa is back. With this amp and a good PRS, you can also do everything
Glad I could help! Yes. This is a very versatile amp.
Man sounds great,
Thanks a lot
Spicy!
Thanks!
Tuning??
Normal tuning. Regards.
Nice demo, fun riff! Sounds like a sweet amp! I couldn’t zoom in to see what notes you were playing though.
Thanks! Riff is around an A chord. Octave from A on 6th string to A on 3rd string then pull off to open G.
HI, thanks for the good review , question > Mesa/Boogie Mark Five or Mesa/Boogie California Tweed 2:20 for santana tone ? or should i say closer ?
Thanks! Hi. Carlos appear to use a Mark 1 and fender Twin. So a bit of both I guess to be honest not something I have experimented on specifically
Love the volume jump on extreme mode
I agree, this is my favorite mode in channel 2
The amp sounds really good when: Mark IV mode, gain at noon and Master at 1 oclock - favorite rhythm tone. Clean channel, crunch mode, Gain at around 2 oclock, Master at 3 o'clock. I find that after 1 o'clock, you don't get more volume, you just soak the power section more and get that awesome lead tone. Cranking the Master all the way sounds awesome but the little EL84's don't last too long. If you like that much soak and volume the 35W version is for you. Bigger transformer adds a bit of low end kick too.
Thanks for the comment. Will try those settings for sure.
@@JazzTheMusicCat Your DAW will hate you but just try the settings but don't do it at home. You may want to rent a practise room for an hour or so. Every Mark V 25 owner should. You think the amp is unbelievable at home, that's only scratching the tip of the awesomeness of this amp. It comes alive after 9 o'clock on the Master. I see your username and I'm thinking that you should do what the old cats do, roll back the guitar volume and turn up the amp and then use the guitar volume to adjust "the lead tone" in the same way that Angus Young from AC/DC does. He dimes his Marshall's on 10 and uses the guitar volume to adjust the tones from clean, to rocking rhythm and to lead. Try having the guitar on 5 and turning up the volume. It lets the amp open up and give more overtones. The Master is like the Mid control (and if you've read the manual you'll know about the gain boost on the Mid control past 12 o'clock). Past 12 o'clock think of it thickening the sound rather than making it much louder. It's like a voicing control - how much do you want the tone to mush together and sing? I love the Mark series because when you play a chord under 1 o'clock on the master you hear the individual notes like you would on an acoustic, whereas on a Marshall you'd hear a chord like mush but sometimes, like in lead tones, you want that compression. Past 1 o'clock you get those classic "singing" lead tones like Michael Schenker, Van Halen and Malmsteen but it is stupid loud. I think many don't appreciate how much driving the power section of an amp gives you a great lead tone. For me it's more power section than pre-amp but at home that's not possible. People think "oh it's only 25 watts" but then shart their pants when they hear it. When I first got the amp and was asked what the amp was, I'd call it "the giggle box" because it makes you laugh when you hear that lunchbox cranked. I think Marshall got it right when they did the 1 watt amps. Still too loud to crank at home but it was closer to "that" sound for lead tones. At lower volumes the Boogies have a fizz to the lead tone but that goes away when you give the Master a good tug clockwise. The the amp, especially on Channel 1, crunch mode, sounds like an EL34 amp being cranked. Those little EL84's are ace. If you crank the amp often, keep a set of spares on hand, especially for the preamp tubes... ... and this is another reason why I love Mesa so much, even though I'm an English guy and dyed in the wool Marshall dude: their manuals are awesome. No BS, cut to the chase, this is how you troubleshoot tube issues like microphonics. Takes the mystery out of it all. Great stuff. Randall Smith is a legend. It's not just about the tone, it's about making sure that you can play your gig each night. Got a ringing bell tone when you palm mute a note, smack preamp tube 1 with a pencil and see if it sings. If not try 2... It took the mystery out of it all - tone for dummies. And I love that. I see you used the MkIIC+ mode. For me, the Mark 2's that I played sound more like the MkIV mode on this amp and if you listen to the JP2C tones, you'll get that. I think the EL84's soften the sound a little. I like the MkIIC+ on this amp as it's unique but for me it doesn't have that big "wide" sound that a big Mark IIC+ has. But rather than a loss, I think it's great as I don't always want something as menacing as a Mark IIC+ being in my face. Enough of my ramblings on my favorite amp. More beer!
Nicely done
Thanks!
Wow smokin
Thank! I have this one and the blue one as well.
I got the sunburst but maybe I'll get the Cherry also
Nice demo showing all the possibilities of this guitar: Thanks !
Thank you very much. This was a pleasant surprise to me. A friend has a Gibson ES-335 and albeit not the same, it does get you in the territory. Great value and no regret.
12 o’clock will not work for MarkV, guaranteed
Always happy to learn more about this amp from the guitar players community. What settings make more sense to you ( or work for you)?
@@JazzTheMusicCat Treble= Gain, Gain= Bass and Gain, Presence= treble which adds gain. This amp is MID heavy already so don't feel bad about lowering it. The real EQ is in the sliders
Thanks a bunch for the reply. I will experiment based on that.
@@JazzTheMusicCat the EQ knobs are pre-preamp. 12 o’clock on the mid is actually around 10 o’clock. It is best to take the base out with the knob EQ and add it in the sliders. You will get a much nicer base response tone. The knobs are all very interactive. the gain changes a lot with the treble in the mid knobs. I find that the amp really comes alive when I add an EQ in the effects loop. Personally, I dial down the one K just a little bit.
Awesome. Thanks for the reply and will definitely try that.
well done demo, thanx!
Glad you liked it!
I think this is my next amp.
No regret at my end.
There is now a combo with 12 in speaker. Cool
Ive been trying to decide between this and a 68 Deluxe Reverb. The $ 1000 difference is what lm deciding between mainly.
What cabinet are you running?
California Tweed 2x12 Jensen
have you had a chance to look at the pickups? are they faithful to the mij ceramics of the era w the one bar magnet or are they the faux p90 mim standard style w the 2 bars with the poles sandwiched between?
According to fender website they are Three custom ceramic single-coil Stratocaster pickups. Hotter than my other Strat pickups ( I have custom 69 on one of them and an Eric Johnson Strat). Otherwise not sure how to respond because I am not paid attention to that. All I wanted is a Strat Olympic white with rosewood neck and this fit the bill. Regards.
Sounds Great! 🎉
Thanks a lot.
Great demonstration of a fantastic guitar 🎸
Glad you liked it!
Great tone! Is that just the tweed or are there any pedals in the mix?
Thanks! Just the LP direct and at 1W setting.
What kind of speakers are in your cab?
Vintage 30. This is a 2x12 closed back rectifier cab
@@JazzTheMusicCat Thanks!
My pleasure
Yeah mon
Thanks!
What’s the point of demonstrating a head with a pedal?
The rhythm is without a pedal. Thanks for the comment. I may do a video on that.
nice tones. I previously owned the older 2018 4-40 Como. I loved the amp but could never dial out the bass even full off it had an over emphasis on bass.
Thanks! I seem to be able to dial a good tone with my guitars failing easily. In comparison my Mesa 525 needs a bit more tweaking. Regards.
This problem of excessive bass was in fact experienced on early versions of the 4:40 equipped with the Jensen Blackbird ALNICO 100 speaker. It has been solved since Mesa equipped it with the Jensen Blackbird ALNICO 40 speaker.
Hi. Whats the year of your Mesa boogie amps ? Thanks
Mesa 225 2018 and Mesa 220 2023. Regards.
Great demo
Thanks!
Position 4 is the neck and bridge together.
Yes. And positions 1 & 3 are reverse. My nb 2 guitar after my Gibson LP.
Is this the same size as a Mark 25w head?
Hi. Actually a bit bigger than the mark five 25. Tweed: Height: 8 3/4" Width: 16 1/4" Depth: 10" Mark 525: Dimensions: 8" H x 14" W x 8.75" D
@JazzTheMusicCat Thanks for the specs. Walter Trout says that you can play them whisper quiet, but still retain all that fat drive and sustain. Trying not to wake people up at 2am🤫
Agree. This is a great amp all around and really good for home use ( can be quiet but retain tone) and good for recording too. Regards.
@JazzTheMusicCat Going to try this and cali tweed tmrw! Excited to see the differences. I've only used a Filmore 25 combo, sounded like a boutique Fender I guess 😅. Appreciate your help. Best Wishes
That’s how to make a demo on a specific topic. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks and glad it was useful
Is the neck a satin material or a glossy slick material?
Fender’s website says gloss urethane for neck finish. Super smooth to play. No regret with this guitar.
@@JazzTheMusicCatI’m interested in owning one of these im just wondering if the neck has this very smooth wood or those coated glossy woods that kinda stick to my hands
Well. This could be subjective. Just checked and it does not feel sticky to me. I think that vintage style guitar like an Eric Johnson model or fender vintage II. will have a different paint and would be sticky for a while but then disappear as you use the guitar. This neck has the same paint and feel as 90% of my 14 guitars, so will say “not sticky”. I really like this guitar and it became my nb 2. The first only guitar I have with no paint feel (more like a stain) is my acoustic Taylor 214)
@@JazzTheMusicCat Do you have any satin wood guitars?
@@JazzTheMusicCat satin feels more like smooth and your hand can glide across the neck
This reminded me of Mercyful Fate a bit for some reason. Great job and nice guitar 🎸
Awesome! Thank you!
Probably not the wisest idea to just run the Mark knobs 'all at 12' as they are pre-gain and need to be very different from the usual tone stacks in amps. Still enjoyed the video though! Thanks!
Thanks
Best amp ever, I have a same one. It’s great and versatile.
Thanks. Yes it is a keeper. I really like the options - two channels and 3 settings per channel and spring reverb.

@@JazzTheMusicCat 💚
Sounds Killer 🤘
Thank you. Appreciate that.
Love a good pair of P90s. The Tributes are solid guitars. All you need and nothing more.
Thanks. Agree those are solid and versatile instruments
unfortunately P90 without covers just look janky
It does look odd when compared to the usual look with humbuckers. I don’t mind it, I was looking to experiment with P90 pickups and for a USA gibson, the price and value felt right.
I bought the humbucker version in vintage cherry satin 3 years ago. Very good value in a USA made Gibson.
Agree. Pretty light too and with P90 you sit in between humbucker and single coil pickups. Great value.
Really great demo!! I'm wondering if it can do bedroom levels and retain the tone here?
Thanks. Appreciate that. All clips are at bedroom level, well maybe a bit on the loud side. But this amp can retain its tone using a potentiometer in the loop. Can also be achieved with a volume pedal or a pedal with volume knob. I also have an attenuator. This works well too, but this is where I found the tone is affected the most.
@@JazzTheMusicCat awesome info!! Thank you!! I think JHS makes a "black box" that is made for this?... thanks again!
That is what I am using (JHS box). Regards.
@@JazzTheMusicCat cool!! good to know!!
Very nice tone and pickin!
Thank you very much. Glad you liked it
Great. Is it better than Mark V?
Thanks. It is different. The mark 5:25 has two channels and sounds more modern to me. It is quite louder as well. The 2:20 has more vintage vibe and it becomes more apparent when I use dirt pedal. I may do a video to compare them at some point.
@@JazzTheMusicCat Thank you for your kind explanation. I have a Mark 5 and I want to buy a California Tweed too. Looking forward to the comparison video.
My pleasure and will try in the next few weeks

Dang, what are those setting on that angry driver. That sounded nice !
Thanks! In general volume as needed and everything else at 12 o’clock. I have yet to find a setting that does not sound good. Lower gain works nice as well in an edge of breakup amp.
